We need Spencer at this point. He'll nerdserve all of ya.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 November 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

I'm prepared to compete in any nerd-off.

More on the four scenes:

Trailer looks laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

caek, Friday, 21 November 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

The big action footage in the fourth clip was stunning, involving Kirk and a sword-wielding Zulu (John Cho) parachuting down from a shuttle to shut down signals that are being sent from a bore platform far above Vulcan. It's very scary. So is the Russian accent used by Anton Yelchin as Chekhov. All in all, I was more impressed by the footage than the trailer below:

john cho, playing against type as an african

"hey fake nerds: attributes in the real star trek RPG are percentile

Great point. But did anyone actually play the Star Trek RPG? And is there an intelligence attribute in that game? I bet it's I.Q. or something...

Nate Carson, Friday, 21 November 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

Aha! Thank you Wikipedia: "Star Trek: The Role Playing Game characters begin with seven basic abilities - Strength, Endurance, Dexterity, Intellect, Luck, Charisma and Psionic Potential."

So it's 3d6 for Intelligence, 2d10 for Intellect.

Thought I'd lost my edge for a minute there.

Nate Carson, Friday, 21 November 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, we played the old FASA star trek RPG when i was in junior high and high school. granted, we played two or three games in four or five years of once or twice per week RPG action (up to four times a week in the summer).

the thing was that character creation took a looooooong time. you would roll your base attributes and skills, which were usually terrible (at most in the low twenties in percentile). but then you would roll for your "tours of duty" - each one was like five years or something of shipboard experience, during which time you advanced in rank, gained skill points, sometimes got injuries or backstory or whatever. it took hours to roll through all of this stuff - roll to see how many tours, then roll for each tour to see what it was, then roll on subtables to see what happened, etc etc etc

they should've just had archetypes like the classic west end star wars RPG did ... actually we should've just played the original series characters but for some reason that sort of thing seemed off-limits to young minds.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 21 November 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know... character creation is often a really fun process. I think some of those random results would help a youngster to be immersed in writing their own back story within certain parameters.

Glad to know that someone owned a game that got used! I certainly owned dozens of RPGs but played AD&D 90% of the time. Marvel Superheroes got a lot of love too (great universal table system).

I still cannot fathom how they cast whatsisface as kirk, at all

JJ Abrams has always cast pretty people regardless of talent level.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 24 November 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

Although speaking of 90210 the kirk guy looks too much like Kelly's earnest lawyer bf from the later seasons.

^^^ hahaha
I was actually thinking that this movie is going to be a lot like George Clooney's version of Batman...

But I like "Batman & Robin". Sure it sucks compared to Keaton and Bale's movies, but it's funny. Although possibly unintentionally so. And this new Trek movie is much the same. So instead of being mad with director for not making "Trek Begins", I'm going to enjoy this as "Camp Trek" with a bit of pantomime thrown in. He's behind you! It's like different interpretations of Hamlet.

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

Poor Val Kilmer. The forgotten Batman.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

I liked his Batman movie, too, but mostly for Jim Carrey (!).

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

btw jim carrey looks to be about 63 yrs old in that new movie he's got coming out

omar little, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

Carrey was the main reason for seeing BF. He totally steals the movie away from Kilmer.

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

jim carrey looks hella old

Remember when:

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

My biggest regret about "Batman Forever" is that no one actually explained to Tommy Lee Jones or the scriptwriters that The Joker and Two-Face were two distinct characters that acted nothing alike.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Carrey does more acting in that film than TLJ and Kilmer combined.

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

It came out, I think, when I was in seventh or eighth grade and I admit I had a damn huge crush on the Carrey Riddler. (The Riddler from the show scared the shit out of me, as did Cesar Romero.)

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

GIS prompts me to ask 'wow wtf was I thinking?'

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

If you were Cesar Romero, would you be:

a) proud that you were remembered for an iconic performance as The Joker
b) peeved that all your other cool films (including acting alongside Marlene Dietrich) had been overshadowed by your portrayal of a character from a comic book
or
c) musing on the spectacle of another ILX movie thread going off topic even though the Trek film isn't even out yet (yes I know it's my fault 'cause I mentioned Batman first here)

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

which would you rather do:

1) bitch about a terrible movie trailer
2) begin the great "Batman Forver" Reclamation Project of '08-'09

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

haha they misspelled Sylar and Uhuru

venom boners are totally canon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

(xpost) The history of ILX has shown that we can do both...

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

this shit looks like 'lost in space' and i keep thinking of this: http://glamerica.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/goodman03_muppetbabies.jpg

omar little, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

All these pictures just spell Jim Henson's Star Trek Babies to me, which will really, really suck.

― Little Hussein (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 16 October 2008 13:45 (1 month ago)

Also, just like Muppet Babies, this film breaks continuity established by a previous movie ("The Muppet Movie", although that's a meta movie).

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'm really in two minds about all this (like Harvey Two-Face - yay!!!) - on the one hand I want it to be a proper Trek movie, on the other hand, I'm prepared to enjoy this as a popcorn camp-fest.

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

You don't cuddle with JJ Abrams, you strap in and feel the Gs.

venom boners are totally canon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

Vicky Vale: "What do you want?!"
The Joker: "A little song, a little dance... Abrams head on a lance..."

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

jj abrams starts everything well (except for the de rigueur dinner party scenes that set up the characters that seem to appear in all his shows and films) and then everything just gets stupid pretty quick.

omar little, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm just waiting for the Cloverfield monster to appear in this.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

They could throw in some songs, then it would be like Mamma Mia in space. With awesome explosions.

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of hope this Star Trek movie ends up being an elaborate tie-in explaining the Lost smokemonster as just another Star Trek sentient cloud being.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

The other thing that's bothering me...

4. In a lengthy action sequence, Kirk, Sulu (John Cho) and a third, red-shirted Starfleet recruit (don’t get too attached to him) parachute from the upper atmosphere of the planet Vulcan onto a giant drill that is burrowing a hole to the center of the planet.

...reminds me of the first level of the video game "MDK", where your character parachutes onto a mining machine that's heading towards a city. Which brings me to this: assuming there's going to be a video game tie in, do you think they write the movie first or the game? Because a lot of it sounds like a scriptwriter said "hey, that would be cool in a video game!"

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

hahahahahhahaa

dat dude delmar (and what), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)
