ilxor, damn you, you've got me thinking about it now. If I wanted to do an 18 week training program, I'd have to start next Monday.

Word.

I ran a 6:57 mile last night on the sidewalk, varying terrain, not a flat/fast track.
Ouch (for me).
― more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)
That's about my fastest mile too, I ran it in a 5k earlier this year. I wonder if I could run one faster if that was all I was running and it was in a track.
My new pain is right where my leg and foot connect, right on top. Kills me when I flex it up and when I walk. Really bothering me because I'm really ready to get out and start training again. I'm almost certain I'm going to sign up for the Wisconsin marathon in May.
― Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)
6:57 mile = 24:05 5k = 50:01 10k = 1:51:18 half mary = 3:54:43 marathon

― more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)
that seems pretty fast! i should have run an all out mile or 5k about a month ago to help with my projected pacing. sorta gambling on knowing what pace to run. my wife is all "do it by feel, thats what ive always done." as i've never done a marathon, that sounded like bad advice. i'd rather have a plan for my first marathon.
― my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Thursday, 14 October 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)
The McMillan calc is the great false hope. My 5k PR is 22:44, which would translate to a 3:41:37 marathon. Add 2 hours to that and you got me.
― Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)
"do it by feel" is awful advice for a marathon imo - if you're pacing yourself correctly the first 10 miles feel way too slow and the classic error is to speed up because it feels easy. It's only 10 miles later that you realise you're dying on your feet as a result. Plan everything - start off with a realistic target time and work backwards.

is running two days in a row really bad? i've reverted to every second day mostly but my weekend is going to be spent drinking/eating at a wedding and i really want to give myself some feel good energy by going for a nice long run tonight...
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)
is running two days in a row really bad?
Not at all, go for it! If you run 5 days a week like I try to, you've gotta string a few days together.
― more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)
seandalai, I agree about running "by feel". I also hate when people say "listen to your body". I antagonize h@l h1gdon about this type of crap on twitter. Great fun.
― Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)
i just read a lot of people saying not to run two days in a row, but it's not that practical, and i like the discipline of going a second day...
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 14 October 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)
There should be no issues for most able bodied individuals running 2 days in a row. Especially if they have a modest base of weekly miles.
― Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
A good rule to follow, instead, is not to run two hard workouts two days in a row. Alternate easy/hard/easy/hard when you run back to back days.
― more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)
I would do Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday. Thursday & Monday were always the shorter distance/easier runs.
― Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
Did my first race ever the last weekend. A half in 1:50. I'm quite surprised to find that that's a 7 min/mile. I completely outpaced myself in the first 7 miles, and ended up walking near the end. Doing a race has left me raring to get back into training, which I'd pretty much stopped beforehand.
― Vasco da Gama, Thursday, 14 October 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
my dad told me his best marathon time is 2hrs59 (!!!)
this is my new target (!!!)
― câ–²zen (cozen), Thursday, 14 October 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)
ilxor OTM re alternation. Your body will tell you if it can't handle the stress.
― seandalai, Thursday, 14 October 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
it's all sort of new to me hence all the questions. it can be hard to "listen to your body" etc as sometimes i'll have a sore joint as i run that goes away after 10 mins, other times afterwards it's still sore and you think "maybe i should have stopped."
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 14 October 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
your body is going to take a while to get used to this, so give it some time to "talk" to you imoyou won't know what it's saying til you know its language
in other words, there is nothing to be lost by playing it safe for a while to see how you react to different stressors
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
Finally starting to feel better. Ankle/shin/foot pain has gone way down. Still having some ITB twinges though. Begrudgingly will sit the rest of the weekend.
Thinking about 2011 races, this would be my ambitious long distance schedule, 2 halfs, 2 fulls, a 10 miler and a 50k. Considering how my 2010 went, that's probably crazy.
― Jeff, Saturday, 16 October 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)
and a smattering of 5k's and 8k's.
― Jeff, Saturday, 16 October 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)
That's not too outrageous, Jeff.
My 2010 to date = four 30k trail races, three marathons, a 25k and a 60k... I think.
― ilxor being real fucking helpful in this discussion (ilxor), Saturday, 16 October 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)
May throw in a 50k in about 5-6 weeks if I'm feeling good, otherwise I'm going to call it a year.
Considering I was not in the best shape for 26.2, I figure I can run an additional 5 miles with a little work.
50 mile in 2012.
― Jeff, Saturday, 16 October 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)
The current wisdom in training for races seems to be that you can improve more consistently by running less and at slower paces, not more and faster. But that advice is assuming your goal is to improve your race times and you're willing to plan your life around following that kind of training schedule. So in terms of race training, yeah, running on consecutive days is (apparently) a waste of effort, since it won't help you improve and it may cause overuse injuries. But I started running, for example, to lose weight. And so running four days a week instead of three benefits me because it's more calories burned.
You just have to make sure you're not overdoing it, especially if you haven't got six months to a year of weekly under your belt, which is about how long it takes the average person's body to adapt to running all the time. So they say "just listen to your body" but listening to your body is hard, especially if you have spent years ignoring it! That's something you have to learn how to do. You gotta pay attention to subtle sensations that are different for everyone and then know what they mean. It's almost harder than the actual running!

rocknroll marathon denver is done. i kept my target pace through about mile 17, then general fatigue and major foot pain started to set in. i think with electronic timing i was somewhere around 3:57. dont know if i wanna do that ever again.

you will be healthy again and you are superbadass on the pain thing, so you will conquer. when my foot started to hurt, your travails came to mind and provided inspiration!
favorite sign from mile 12- "the reason your feet hurt is cuz youre kicking so much ass!"

ha, I saw that sign about 4 times during the Chicago marathon. It's a good one.
Detroit looks interesting, how it winds through the parks.

Hah, it takes about 2-3 days for the motivational wheels to start turning again after a race. You'll be back.

I ran a beautiful 14 miler this morning at about 10:10 avg pace -- took me 2:22 or so.
It really is an addiction. A painful addiction.

when your target pace is too fast, and you start slightly too hard, your actual pacing chart does this red line thingy, more easily viewed as the blue line thingy. the green line is target pace. the yellow line is steady pace equivalent of my actual time.

ran 8k in a downpour today. it was gross but the actual running was weirdly a lot easier, maybe because all i could think was "OMG I AM SO DRENCHED THIS WEATHER IS HIDEOUS" there wasn't any room for my muscles or lungs to complain?
i did overtake someone going up a hill, that was good, though the sheets of rain blinding me made it impossible to tell whether they were an old granny that i shouldn't be proud of overtaking.
pet hates when out running are people who are ignorant of basic etiquette, who make no effort to stand aside so you have room to pass them. have genuinely got into shouting matches because of that in the past.

i feel like this is unnecessary modern anger but god it drives me mental when that happens, today a woman was texting on her phone and looked up and saw me well in advance, she was completely in the way walking towards me on a v narrow street and she just kept texting. she didn't bother attempting to step out of the way, so i had to actually do that sort of staggering stop thing really quickly to avoid just running straight into her. i hate confrontation on the street but i did tell her to look where she's going.
also bikes on the canal...some dude cycled past me on the inside today when i was running under a bridge, no bell, just stealthily a bike just appears about a foot to my left between me and a wall...
also people who walk along the footpath entirely spread out so you can't get past
i luckily missed the downpour in the 45 minute window in between that crazy rain btw lex...

I live next to some awesome running areas but the weekends can be hellish with the number of people walking slowly and the clusters of cyclists as well. I got out of the way for some of the latter a few weeks ago and wound up stepping wrongly in an uneven part of the grass and hurting my ankle, which is still recovering.

Got my footpod today! Now if only I could run, I could start tracking my cadence.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)
i agree on the congestion issue generally, but will add that hitting the bell on the bike when overtaking peds/runners presents its own risks actually- often when i ring or say 'on your left', it confuses the ped/runner who gets all squirrelly and behaves very unpredictably. ped/runner then moves left, NO RIGHT! SPIN! on busy paths, i always ring though. for little kids, i basically slow to walking, since no amount of explanation's gonna justify hitting a kid and their behavior is basically random.
― my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
i think the bell is pretty good, can usually tell when the person is about to pass me. mind you i do have headphones in a lot, i usually try and give a glance or two over my shoulder every now and again.

Per doc's orders, I'm out for 2 more weeks. My foot pain that I've had post marathon is just tendinitis. Just need to let it rest. This is going to suck.
