No, it's nice, I guess. I know, I'm being crabby. (Too much sugar.) I guess my complaint really centers around the quality of the offerings. This stuff is... not good.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

It's the crap their kids won't eat.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

I like office treats. It's nice when you're dragging in the middle of the afternoon and lo and behold, there's a tub of cookies next to the printer.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

We get free cokes. That's awful nice. It's the perfect pick-me-up after lunch.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh lord, Strictly Ballroom. That movie came out while I was in Australia.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Why can't I remember that I don't like "wraps"? (Because I was distracted by the word "portabella," that's why.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

As did Romper Stomper. 91-92 was a banner year for Aussie cinema. xpost

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

What is it about "wraps" that you don't like?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Catching up:

I don't really like champagne all that much. Anything that is alcohol + sweetness + bubbles is generally bad news for my stomach, although rum & cokes have never been a problem. I'm thinking more like wine coolers or cider or drinks of that ilk.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I like Entenmann's donuts!

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

The tortilla. By themselves, flour tortillas are kind of disgusting. I can't really explain this, and I didn't used to feel this way until recently -- but esp. when you take a bite and it's mostly tortilla, yuck.

I could totally go for a muffin right about now.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

i love the occasional effervescent champagne drunk. it's been a while. last time was probably when i was in memphis, me and my friend chris split a bottle of bubbly in the record store. and chased it with jim beam. that was a long day.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Man, last day at old job is getting weird. Neither of my bosses is here, so I'm effectively peacing out for them to come in and find me gone. And the other offer was so quick I can't even give two weeks' notice. Best thing about leaving though: not having to talk to/deal with the constantly condescending/crabby/tired African girl I work with. Not that the African part is SO important, but since I dislike her for valid reasons, I can then get irritated by her awkward syllabic stresses.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

when you take a bite and it's mostly tortilla, yuck

OTM. This exactly the reason I figured you'd give. Close second: when you take a bite and it's mostly dressing/mustard/whatever.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

jaymc otm about bites of pure tortilla. Especially when that part of the tortilla is a little bit moist and gummy. Blech.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

What's the practical advantage of the wrap, anyway? Is it just like a sandwich in convenient tube form? Were people really clamoring for this?

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Wow! This press release for a job-oriented talk really gets me going! Okay! Tell me all about it! I'm all ears!

J: a muffin or a , y'know, muffin?

Eeewww. I'm pretty sure that tortillas, as purchased, are basically half raw, and meant to be cooked or baked or whatev during food prep. This fact is completely unconcealable with corn tortillas which is probably why wraps etc are made with flour ones...but they're not much better.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Dan, here are my thoughts on your catching up albums:

YES, BY ALL MEANS, CATCH UP ON THESE ALBUMS (in descending order of awesomeness)
The Stooges - Fun House (IMO, the best American rock album ever)
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions... (I prefer Fear of a Black Planet, but mainly due to nostalgia)
Fugazi - Red Medicine (my pick for their best)
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight (though it's only their fourth-best album)
Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I (I'm not sure how well this would stand up to someone who hadn't heard it before, I think nostalgia plays a big part on this one too)
Radiohead - Kid A
Ghostface - Supreme Clientele

DON'T BOTHER, THESE SUCK (in descending order of suckiness)
Modest Mouse - Moon & Antarctica (In the Lonesome Crowded West is their only album that I rate, personally)
Husker Du - Zen Arcade

I AM NOT FAMILIAR ENOUGH WITH THESE ALBUMS TO COMMENT
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity *
Ornette Coleman - Shape of Jazz to Come
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Pink Floyd - Dark Side *
all Pedro the Lion and Death Cab (but esp. Control and Photo Album, respectively)
Leonard Cohen - New Skin
Jump, Little Children - Vertigo *
Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Interpol - Antics *
Gram Parsons - GP/Grievous Angel & Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo
The Go! Team album
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Frames - For the Birds
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces *
Elliott - False Cathedrals
Bowie - Scary Monsters
Constantines - Shine a Light
Clem Snide - Soft Spot

* - I haven't heard, but I'm guessing based on unfounded prejudices that they aren't worth the trouble

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, Dave, not Dan.

Fuck the tortilla haterz.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

If you work in the publishing industry and related fields and don't know what those are about, you're fucked and no seminar will un-fucked you.

xpost: those are Dave's catching up albums. But I like many of them too!

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

J: a muffin or a , y'know, muffin?

You ain't seen nothin' till you're down on the muffin.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know it was possible to have not heard Dark Side of the Moon.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

We're not getting into another brawl about Husker Du over here, but DON'T LISTEN TO NICK. Zen Arcade is great. THE END. I'm not responding to any of those others because I don't have all day.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I've probably heard parts of it here and there, but never the whole thing.

HOW WOULD I HAVE HEARD etc.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooourns

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

DON'T BOTHER, THESE SUCK (in descending order of suckiness)
Modest Mouse - Moon & Antarctica (In the Lonesome Crowded West is their only album that I rate, personally)

Boo. M&A is great. ("that I rate" -- what are you, Britishes?)

Husker Du - Zen Arcade

Yay!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Nick, I actually know/have heard all of those albums, and part of my reasons for reassessing them include my nostalgia for them (yes, including Emergency & I).

I think End Hits might be the best Fugazi album.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I like Kill Taker a lot, too.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

i was all set to echo nick's thought on fun house until i read the zen arcade thing.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I think End Hits might be the best Fugazi album.

I agree.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Otto and I are shaking our fists at you -- both of you! -- RIGHT NOW.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, yeah, I could totally make a longer list of stuff I haven't heard and need to. But I have heard all those albums.

xp: re: Kill Taker.. hmm, okay. I'll go back to it.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Actually, you know, I don't think I've actually heard Red Medicine, though I've heard a couple of the songs -- so I am reserving judgment.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I feel sick from that goddamn wrap.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

moon & antarctica was the one that totally killed any remaining interest i had in modest mouse. i thought it was a really limp album.

xpost- i did just actually shake a fist so as not to make a liar out of the milkmaid.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

WRONG, it's Red Medicine.

My new annoying thing to do in band practice is to imitate both Ian Mackaye and Guy Piccioto. I think my Guy is better than my Ian though. Sometimes Ben and I play fake Fugazi songs. He needs a bell though.

THIS IS MY BIRTHDAY PONY, THIS IS MY BIRTHDAY PONY

At least we can all agree that nu-Fugazi is better than old-Fugazi, except for probably Amanda and Otto (haw)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

From amg, re:Kill Taker -- "It's probably Fugazi's least digestible record from front to back."

SIGN ME UP.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

So wait... Nick, you like Telephono better than Moonlight?

xp: re wrap... :(

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to hook up the cassette player so I can listen to Red Medicine.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

keep talking smack nick and i'll punch you in the ovaries.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

About as digestible as a wrap.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

The heavy-handedness of the non-concert/interview documentary footage from Instrument kind of cooled me on the Fu. Those "arty" shots can fuck off.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

*pow* right in the baby maker.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

No love for Steady Diet of Nothing or Repeater? I think Red Medicine is by far the weakest. Wild.

xpost: Count me in with the oldies! :) Although End Hits has a special place in my heart.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Nick's favorite Spoon albums:

1. A Series of Sneaks
2. Gimme Fiction
3. Telephono
4. Kill the Moonlight
5. Girls Can Tell

Yes?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Add Fugazi to the list of bands you could cover that would make me automatically appear at your show.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to think which band should write a song called "It's Time to LOL at Yul Brynner's Funny Hat." Out Hud? Xiu Xiu?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

getting up at 5, going out at night and then waking up at 6 the next morning just doesn't work for me.

i'm out of bed at 5:15 every monday through friday. you've got to want it.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

One more group of people who are likely to see me in person: fellow students in class tonight. Although I had a dream that I completely forgot to go to class, then I went to my professor's office to apologize and caught him sleeping in a recliner in his undiepants. Then I realized that it was 6AM and that's why he was in his skivs.

Otto, like I said, it doesn't work for me.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

You must have superhuman energy reserves.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

no, you just get used to doing things.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Otto lives a rock star's life. I, like Amanda, cannot. I can manage on less than five hours of sleep two nights in a row if I must but I am an emotional and physical wreck as a result and need excesses of sleep for the next three nights to get back to normal.

I'm an eight hour a night girl, although I would prefer nine or ten.

Mmmm... sleep.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy when I get six.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

i usually don't remember my dreams but i had one right before my alarm clock went off this morning. i was in bed with a friend of mine and i asked her how work was, she said "it was slow all morning then got really busy towards the end" which was exactly what she said to me saturday afternoon when i asked her how work was. then she got up out of bed and went to the living room. i got up too and even though i left the bed seconds after she did the living room was empty. then the alarm went off.

not bad enough i'm not getting any in my waking hours, i've got to strike out in my dreams too.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy when I get six.

way too easy.

why does some cottage cheese rock out & other kinds suck? it's a fucking mystery.

carl looks like he's, um, changed, in that photo, Amanda.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Some summer I'll head up to Dawson City.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

way too easy.

I don't know what this means. Did you read my post the other day about how I'm striving to get six hours of sleep a night? (Or 30 hours a week, however it balances out.) This has been a challenge for me, since I have a slew of bad habits that have prevented me from getting to bed on time. But I am trying now, because I really do feel happier and more productive when I'm rested. I just need to keep reminding myself of that in the wee hours of the night.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

The first day that I only get five or six hours of sleep, I'm ok the next day. I can usually even avoid napping. But the next day, if I don't get my eight hours, I'm a pile of poo. Seven hours for two or three days in a row is barely -- BARELY -- livable. I'd rather not push it, though.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

i never get more than 7 hours of sleep. a few days in a row of going out will wear me down (last week or two weeks ago i went out 6 of 7 days and was a f'ing mess) but once in a while is livable.

john, "i'm happy when i get six" and way too easy... me and my boss have this running joke where we can take seemingly innocuous statements and tag on the line "sounds like my prom night" or a variation of that. it was the first thing i thought of when i read your post. yes, mentally i never got past age 14.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I value my weekends too much to spend them catching up on the sleep I missed during the week. Saturday and Sunday mornings are good times to be relished, not slept through.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

(At least, that's the philosophy I'd like to adopt. Beer and rock and roll can and often do complicate this.)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah, by the way, for the clarinet of Jaymc.

I'm back from a weekend at the coast. It was overcast and awesome. Then we stopped by the Tillamook cheese factory and came home and I made vegetarian poutine. It was... curious. Now I need to shuffle off to school.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I get about 7 a night consistently and I'm tired (but not debilitatingly so) all the time, but I make it. It's just that I can't pile on smoky bars and booze and whatever on top of not getting enough sleep. I've kicked whatever bad habits used to keep me up at night, so that's behind me. Now it's mostly obligations that keep me up til 11 or 11:30 and back up again at 6 the next morning.

PS -- Kelsey, that's actually a magical photo of me in the future, when Carl has a new friend. Somehow the future has me wearing socks and sandals, and I just don't see that happening, unless I'm outside drinking my morning coffee or something.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Poutine... isn't that french fries covered in cheese curds and gravy? Or something?

Amanda, the socks and sandals happened because you live cut off from humanity and you forgot that it's not okay to do that.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Tillamook cheddar on big, hearty fries -- sweet blue heaven, you know how to make me leave early for lunch.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, Could you please email me a few of the ff pix you took? PUHLEASE??

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh, sure, Sarah. Once I get home tonight, I'll load up your inbox.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

This morning has gone by so quckly. It makes me happy. And perhaps after work today Nick and I will shoot more hoops for dishes.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

chatty cathys.

I ran my first race yesterday! A 5K!

If you did this in Mpls, then I'm pretty sure my sis was also in that race.

Thanks for all the turntable info, DUDES, I'll see what I can put together. Nothing fancy, obviously. It is pretty hilarious, though, when you start perusing the audiophile pages. Dudes talk about 3k turntables and 10k electrostatic speakers like nothing, and how you'd have to be a drooling moran to listen to mp3s.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i kinda sorta know a guy who has a stereo set up that cost him $26,000. he knows he has a problem.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Can any human ear really appreciate $26,000?

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

New thread?

Chicago: Storm at Sunup

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Listening to music is okay and all, but it's not THAT much fun. Not $26,000 worth of fun.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

must be nice to have that kind of money to blow on a stereo.
