Actually, one thing that people don't often mention: work out your pre-race toilet plan.

seandalai, Friday, 8 October 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

AKA, drink a shitload of water the night before, pee all night, then don't drink the morning of the race so you don't have to pee until miles 15-20 and can avoid the long bathroom lines in the first half of the race.

Oh yeah, and try to, uh, poop the morning of the race...

I finished. Heat made it a little difficult and I was definitely undertrained (by design) but I'm pretty happy with the result. Will be doing another.

Jeff, Sunday, 10 October 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

woohoo! wtg jeff!!!

Brilliant! Well done!

How's you time look? ;)

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

Too slow. I'll work on that in the next marathon.

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

5:40. Legs were dead after 20. Byproduct of my longest training run only being 17 miles. Felt like I was running on jelly. I didn't even finish in the top 30,000. :(((((((

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Hey that's pretty good, my first was around 6:10 and I've got it down to 5:10 now after four tries. Hopefully fifth time I'll break 5 hours...

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

so my ankle feels better, but I'm sort of worried about how far to push it. i've not been running for 3 weeks, is it just a case of going for a run and stopping as soon as it hurts?

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 11 October 2010 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

jeff, kudos!

i've stopped running completely :( thread gives me the guilts.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 11 October 2010 09:32 (fifteen years ago)

@Local: If your ankle is going to fix itself it will have by now, so there's no harm in going out for a couple of miles and seeing what happens. Take an ibuprofen beforehand.

seandalai, Monday, 11 October 2010 10:55 (fifteen years ago)

congrats, jeff. that's pretty hardcore, based on what you've been through the last few months.

playing soccer is not agreeing with me, not one little bit. tore muscles around my ribs in the first game, and i shredded my quads and knees in the second game. i jumped in with no preparation, and now it's interfering with running—i slogged through a painful mile yesterday, first time out in two weeks, and it seemed like a bad idea.

mte, Monday, 11 October 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

How are your legs feeling today, Jeff?

I put a 10 miler in the bank yesterday, my first double-digit run since going for 60k a couple months ago. Legs feel great. It's time to crank up the mileage in the coming weeks... some great trail races coming up!

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

i did my final longish run right at projected marathon pace. its weird how slooooow that seems for the first 6 or 7 miles. then it felt fine, i was comfortable all the way to the end. i srsly doubt i will be able to stay with pace after mile 20. im really worried about the world after mile 20 actually.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Monday, 11 October 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

i've been going steady at 3-4 mi 3-4x a week, nothing out of the ordinary, but feeling good.
this morning i had a really nice run and i know my shuffle was cooperating because it played "ghosts of grace" right during the final stretch. (i've posted this song like 100x so i won't post it again, but i'm pretty sure it is my #1 fave running song for that part where you really want to walk but also want to zoom home)

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Monday, 11 October 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

Still pretty sore but I look almost normal when I walk. Won't be running. At least until the end of the week.

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

All I can think about now is my next one. Maybe St. Louis next April.

I did walk a good bit of the last 3 miles. I would run when I saw a camera, because I've got too many fucking race pictures of me walking. Sprinted the last 800 meters.

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

Well done Jeff.

So just did about 3.2 miles, and ankle feels fine! Took it fairly slowly and resisted the urge to push myself too much. I'm pleased cos I haven't run for 3 weeks and was afraid I'd be completely dying but I actually think the gap didn't matter too much, I might have done 4/5 but I have the endings of a cold for the last few days so my sinuses and nose are v blocked, my breathing wasn't as clear as you'd like.

Have agreed to do a half marathon, but it's not till April, so lots of time!

Anyone else on Dailymile these days? If so, friend me:

i periodically post there but half the time i forget

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Monday, 11 October 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

I went to the Dailymile meetup in Chicago. All nice folks and I won a pack of stickers.

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

I ate a slice of bacon at the Dailymile sponsored aid station at mile 15 of the San Francisco Marathon!

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

That's better than stickers.

Speaking of aid stations, at mile 25 they were handing out jello shots. Don't know if they were alcoholic. Maybe it's a new product, sports jello shots.

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

I got a 4 oz. beer at mile 16 aid, ran the next 10 min. or so with a slight buzz...

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)

Sober marathons (x3) = 5:25, 5:35, 6:10.

Marathon w/ beer and bacon = 5:10.

There's your recipe for lowering your PR right there!

i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Monday, 11 October 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

You know what my biggest motivation was? The fucking Eiffel tower passed me.

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/marathon-missfit/assets_c/2010/10/StephStipe%20Twit1-thumb-572xauto-240618.jpg

I passed him back, but that was demoralizing. He finished in like 6:10.

Jeff, Monday, 11 October 2010 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

OK, I need my next marathon. Looking at Go! St. Louis and Cincinnati Flying Pig. Would have liked Austin, but I think it's going to be too soon.

Jeff, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

I'm running Austin. :)

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Probably.

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

If I'm not permanently debilitated from my goal 50 miler two weeks beforehand, that is.

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

You're insane. I like it.

Jeff, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

Come run Austin and we'll get a burger and a beer afterward.

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

one of the best feelings is when within the first 10 steps of a run you can tell you feel incredible and it will be a pleasure to do your run. everything felt springy, painless and fast.

i've not felt that way in a quite a while, but a short tempo run tonight was fantastic and pretty much effortless. i think a part of it was that the temperature has really broken- i could see my breath at times.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

ilxor, damn you, you've got me thinking about it now. If I wanted to do an 18 week training program, I'd have to start next Monday.

Jeff, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

Word.

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

I ran a 6:57 mile last night on the sidewalk, varying terrain, not a flat/fast track.

Ouch (for me).

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

That's about my fastest mile too, I ran it in a 5k earlier this year. I wonder if I could run one faster if that was all I was running and it was in a track.

My new pain is right where my leg and foot connect, right on top. Kills me when I flex it up and when I walk. Really bothering me because I'm really ready to get out and start training again. I'm almost certain I'm going to sign up for the Wisconsin marathon in May.

Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

6:57 mile = 24:05 5k = 50:01 10k = 1:51:18 half mary = 3:54:43 marathon

http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

that seems pretty fast! i should have run an all out mile or 5k about a month ago to help with my projected pacing. sorta gambling on knowing what pace to run. my wife is all "do it by feel, thats what ive always done." as i've never done a marathon, that sounded like bad advice. i'd rather have a plan for my first marathon.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Thursday, 14 October 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

The McMillan calc is the great false hope. My 5k PR is 22:44, which would translate to a 3:41:37 marathon. Add 2 hours to that and you got me.

Jeff, Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

"do it by feel" is awful advice for a marathon imo - if you're pacing yourself correctly the first 10 miles feel way too slow and the classic error is to speed up because it feels easy. It's only 10 miles later that you realise you're dying on your feet as a result. Plan everything - start off with a realistic target time and work backwards.

seandalai, Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

is running two days in a row really bad? i've reverted to every second day mostly but my weekend is going to be spent drinking/eating at a wedding and i really want to give myself some feel good energy by going for a nice long run tonight...

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

is running two days in a row really bad?

Not at all, go for it! If you run 5 days a week like I try to, you've gotta string a few days together.
