complaining that dexter isn't following the established lofty script traditions of the wire is kinda missing the point imo. dexter is basically a pulpy noiry soap opera, never saw it as aiming to make Serious Points. it's like moaning that a batman comic doesn't have the scope of war & peace.
tho when the wire borrows from dexter (mcnulty becomes a quasi-moiderer!) it becomes pretty much unwatchable.

the problem with Dexter is when it tries to deviate from pulpy noiry soap opera into serious drama.

the show also totally lost its sense of humor somewhere along the way. going back and watching the first season, it strikes me how funny it was up until the end game in the last few episodes when suspense takes over.

tbf, it seems like in some ways they're trying to get back to that era... a lot more Dexter quips to the audience than we've gotten in a while, and this Julia Stiles thing could be fun/interesting, though I don't know where they're taking this. I expected her to be unintentionally hilarious when I heard that she was cast.
(still disappointed with the single-stroke kills, though!)
― Nhex, Friday, 15 October 2010 08:08 (thirteen years ago) link
also i hope the kids stay gone, but i'm sure they'll come back. the nanny stuff already smells like a bad storyline
I finally saw season 4 of this and it was good but it also drove me bonkers. Dexter has *so* *many* chances to kill John Lithgow, and he didn't, and fucked up stuff kept happening to people as a result (murders, kid getting kidnapped, etc.). Additionally, in the past a lot of the people he killed escaped the law/fell through the system's cracks and that's why Dexter felt he had to step in and kill them. Here, everyone knew John Lithgow was the killer. I think it was 100% guaranteed that if the Miami police got him, he'd get convicted & get a sentence he deserved. Not only that, but the *hundreds* of families who lost loved ones because of this dude would love to see this guy caught and convicted. They all deserve the emotional release/closure of seeing the case solved, but they're all robbed of it because of Dexter. Only Dexter gets that release! In sum, he was being totally selfish and crazy all season. Also, I wish they'd get rid of imaginary Harry because he had really worn out his purpose as a foil.

I know this is all fiction but it really made me mad!
I know Dexter kills people because he likes murdering, and the vigilante justice thing is a front to make it acceptable, but still, fuck!

they are totally wasting this baby thing
I get that dexter isn't the wire but this thing just seems adrift
― only ad hominem strawman can troll me (Edward III), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 16:54 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, my hopes are middling
i dread the inevitable "twist" that the nanny or julia stiles will have been a serial killer ALL ALONG
― Nhex, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link
bingo...you know thats coming. after dexter kills quinn of course. And whats the deal with Maria and her famous blowjobs?
― thebingo2010 (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link
don't get ahead of yourself, it's next season when she turns out to be the BJ killer and dexter has to snuff his own boss
― only ad hominem strawman can troll me (Edward III), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link
haha. everytime i hear about her bj's i picture her giving one and her giant bulgie eyes popping out like large marge.

lol it's amazing how much I've come around to Deb since the first season.
quinn though... ugh. the actor played a similarly skeezy character on gossip girl - dude makes my skin crawl.

I just finished Season 4 today and basically had the same reaction as Abbott, I assumed I'd dig it more than 3 cuz Lithgow >>>>>> Smits, but I actually found Dexter's dancing with Smits for a whole season a lot more entertaining/gradually rewarding. Was pretty underwhelmed when he finally got around to putting JL on the table.

Love that Batista's shield looks like a heart in that cartoon, apt.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 04:20 (thirteen years ago) link
also did they ever really explain why/how Lithgow had a kid before his current family?
― da croupier, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 04:21 (thirteen years ago) link
creeping feeling of worry/dread that julia stiles is going to repeat the shitty shitty smits plot arc. which will get real boring real fucking fast

nope they left that entire story about lithgows first kid out. WTF.

― thirdalternative, Thursday, 28 October 2010 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link
Yes, through writer contrivance. I just missed it if they established that he had a previous fake happy family before his current one or what.
― da croupier, Thursday, 28 October 2010 14:48 (thirteen years ago) link
He seemed so obsessed with family values and having a perfect family that it rang false to me that he would father a child with some woman (or wife?) and then leave.
― romoing my damn eyes (Nicole), Thursday, 28 October 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link
Seriously, couldn't they have cut a few "I'm disappointed in you, Dexter" scenes with his dad to detail Trinity's backstory? Especially if they're going to make his bastard/abandoned/whothefuckknows daughter such an integral part of the season? It's funny this is the season that got all of the attention/accolades when it easily felt like the sloppiest.

That said, I will never complain about soulful romantic interludes with Sgt. Batista
im a wee bit tired of the batista laguerta shit

― Nhex, Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link
man when the writers on this show suck, they suck hard.
ie - the whole scene close on internal affairs dude saying "so hey whats all this i hear about how awesome ur blowjobs are" *wink wink* to set up the "suprise" IA bust in the hotel room. how exactly was that imaginary conversation supposed to go, you lazy chumps?
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link
or the whole convenient ankle bracelet thing that obv makes it impossible for dude to have gone to whathisnames house, but apparently does absolutely nothing when dex drugs him and drags him off to the middle of the woods to slice and dice.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 October 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link
i thought the idea was that he would be tracked via the ankle bracelet as well, since he was out of the bridge area (bringing the police straight to them), hence the quick return

What do you guys think about Julia Stiles as season 5's companion?
― Mordy, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link
i think julia stiles sux. she conveys the same "inflection" in her voice whether she is upset, angry..what ever. dexter and companions dont go so smooth...see smits.
― Str8 Drapin It (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:26 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i agree, dexter doesn't do 'buddy seasons' so well

^ apparently has Attack of The Clones running silently while listening to Weezer's Hurley
That said, I kinda loved the Smits season. maybe I'd been prepped by all the criticism, but it was nice to have Smits actually playing a guy we're supposed to find insufferable and annoying, as opposed to some sexy Supreme Court Justice turned sexy renegade lawyer nonsense.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

― Str8 Drapin It (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't think this current season is terrible by any measure and probably better than 2+3 (4 + 1 still being reigning champs + especially 4).
― Mordy, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link
It seemed like he was inviting Dexter over to dinner more nights of the week than not! Watching Dexter react to that kind of overbearing behavior was pretty awesome imo. Plus they kinda mapped out his character a lot more than they did Trinity, while still leaving some mystery as to just how crazy he was.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link
although i did love dexters reaction when lumen yelled "fuck you" at him.
