tu lan or taqueria cancun

sarahel, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

I am excited about Ragazza for being a block away, for finally getting a new restaurnat in the space (I love the garden in the back) and, while the pizza is good, also having other items like the above-mentioned sardines, roasts, excellent salads, good wine list.

A Reclaimer Hewn With (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

yep. it's solid and cheap. if you want to walk a little more you have some Pakistani options north of market like Lahore Karahi, Shalimar, et al.

if you want to spend a little more, Farmer Brown's is close.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

I used to swear by Tu Lan until my sister got food poisoning there and ended up puking backstage at the Warfield.

I was just going to say Farmer Brown's isn't all that far away.

I did Ragazza on Friday night and thought it was decent neighborhood restaurant (we got sardines, pork belly, salume plate and egg/taleggio/potato pizza). the salume is probably last on my long list of salume/charcuterie options. pizza was good though. uva kills this place imo, not even close. did you have a falling out with them MW?

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

Where should I shop for food? Rainbow? Half a block from Dolores Park, bike, currently no car. I'm blowing all of my non-existent paycheck at Bi-Rite.

" the salume is probably last on my long list of salume/charcuterie options. "

sorry i was being polite for some reason; it sucked. amateur hour at best. they need to check out quince, perbacco, uva or even cav to see how it's done, this was just garbage.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

on the cheaps: rainbow (actually there are cheaper co-ops in SF but less variety) for bulk, farmers markets for produce, costco for proteins.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

costco for proteins

you buy your meat from Costco???

i don't, but dude wasn't asking me where i shop.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

sweet. thanks for the suggestions.

wmlynch, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

did you have a falling out with them MW?

Not at all. I like their pizza better but otherwise I prefer Uva generally and I'm WAY tighter w/Chris and Boris and Giovanni and Ben. There was a salad at Ragazza that wasn't on the menu, that had egg and radicchio in it that was excellent and their margherita rocked sufficiently and it's nice to have some choice/variation. I will definitely check out their roasts once the weather gets cold enough. I don't really find them comparable, though. One's an enoteca (kinda like an izakaya) albeit a high end one and the other's a local pizza joint.

I get my pork from Costco often or New Mei Wah.

For non-famer's market days, I cannot recommend Golden Produce on Church opposite Safeway enough.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

xxp - Expo 70 is also playing a house show in Oakland on the 5th

sarahel, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

is it that they don't want any vendors in the park? or is it that they're angry that they weren't consulted about WHICH vendors would get to operate?

i got an email from someone who is on the anti-vendor side of things, and it seems like one of their arguments against Blue Bottle is that they are "based in Oakland" and thus not local .... uh?

Dear concerned citizens of San Francisco, do you realize how much of your workforce lives outside of your fair city and how many of your local businesses have facilities outside of San Francisco - because your city is geographically small and super expensive?

sarahel, Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

Oh really? Thanks!

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

it's just kinda dumb - like SF seems to take every opportunity to convert industrial warehouse buildings to luxury lofts, condos, retail or tear them down and build sports stadiums.

I'm a major proponent of SF-Alameda County cooperation and <3

sarahel, Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah cuz that never happens in Oakland, Temescal, Lake Merritt, and Emeryville!

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

we just have a lot more of those types of buildings, and more area, in general. And yeah, Oakland has definitely done this, though Temescal and Lake Merritt aren't good examples. West Oakland and Jack London Sq are better examples. There isn't much left of the former Produce District.

I'm not saying that it's better or worse - but I just think it's unrealistic of the SF people who are complaining about Blue Bottle having facilities in Oakland as not being "local" - considering these pragmatic factors.

sarahel, Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

maybe their point is that six of those "artisinal/post-stumptown/coffee 3.0" type businesses within a mile of dolores park are more apt candidates i guess?

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

maybe - but do they have the infrastructure/capacity to do concessions in the park? Do they want to?

sarahel, Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

Did they even apply?

A Reclaimer Hewn With (Michael White), Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

you'd think Philz would want in on it

crude interloper of a once august profession (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

fuck it, i am going to do a fig on a plate cart. $8p.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno - the email didn't address the contracting process - which, from my experience with government contracting and related stuff, could very well have been done poorly.

Philz is great - one of my friends works there.

sarahel, Thursday, 7 October 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

"fuck it, i am going to do a fig on a plate cart. $8p."

You stole that idea!

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's weird that Blue Bottle wouldn't be considered local when most of their coffee retail establishments are in SF and I'm pretty sure the principle owner lives here as well. It's not like they are incorporated in Delaware or anything.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

are u in SD now?? how is it?

am0n, Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

btw i just assume that all the anti-cart agitation is being stirred up by operatives of the Bi-Rite/Dolores Park Cafe/Delfina/Faye's operatives.

seriously there is real money at stake for the 18th Street Gang and there needs to be a fair opportunity for everyone to submit proposals on a public contract but to focus ire on the vendors is, like, everything that's wrong with "activism".

totally down for shasta figs tho

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

oops - that second "operatives" shd obviously be "cabal"

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

yes! Faye's coffee rules. Plus most people in Dolores Park could use a little exercise and could use a little block and a half jaunt.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

Tartine's coffee is also great btw.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

xp - i wonder if "could use a little exercise" is BART and MUNI's rationale for service cuts and all around mediocrity

sarahel, Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

There was a mother and her infant on my train home yesterday and the kid started to cry and wouldn't stop. At one point I turned to one of the other passangers and said, "MUNI makes me feel that way a lot, too."
