the problem with this is that it ruins it to have your first appearance be a lengthy impression -- viewers have never looked at your face or seen you act normal. you're lacking some kind of baseline. (also is it just me or does SNL go extra lengths for white-people impressions -- makeup, prostheses, etc. -- but for a black person doing an impression of a black person, it's like there's someone over there who just picks out some clothes and goes "oh, that looks great, you totally look black, just like the person you're imitating!")
Paterson jacked up a joke, but I have to give him credit for being exactly as awkward as politicians who are reading off cue cards and didn't have to memorize the whole thing.
