Also I don't like consumerism as activism. And why does everything have to be pink?

― sam york, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 11:50 (seventeen years ago)
I bought Oscar Wao the other day and will read it as soon as I'm caught up on the last couple of New Yorkers.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)
oscar wao is good
i am reading anathem, the new neal stephenson. it is good but very long and i am kind of struggling to get through the last 200 pages or so after rushing through most of it. oddly this is the same thing that happened the last time i read one of his books. he needs to write something shorter
i have the white tiger lined up to read next, then 2666 to read during xmas break from school

Every single time Katie says "Oscar Wao" to me I think she's saying Oscar Wilde. Well, at least the first time she says it each day.

What is 2666? My dad mentioned it to me last night on the phone.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
I guess I could look it up.
it's the "new" (ie newly translated) epic by roberto bolano, the author of the savage detectives and others
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
the translation of the savage detectives was a big deal when it came out a year or so ago - it's very good

Every single time Katie says "Oscar Wao" to me I think she's saying Oscar Wilde
it means oscar wilde (wild), though

And why does everything have to be pink?
Because of nipples.
I have all this stuff to do today, but all I want to do is go play outside. Sunshine is a splendorous thing.

― some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)
Aye, a few times. It's one of my favorite books evar. I'm glad you like it!
― tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)
Anathem is on my short list as soon as I pay my library fines and get the restrictions off my card so I can reserve books at my local branch (NICK COME ON go work for CPL so you can hook me up). I think I will check out this Robert Bolano person, too, since I like long ass books. Water for Elephants is next, though.
― tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)
i'm going to lend it to a girl who doesn't generally read long books, but does have a lot of experience with school athletics and weed addiction.
― some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)
water for elephants was entertaining, i read it on the plane back from north carolina. it was a good plane book.
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)
RobertO Bolano, I mean.
Heh, don't be surprised if she doesn't read it. I have loaned that book to or purchased that book for about ten people in my lifetime and I don't think any of them have actually read the damn thing.
Jesse sent this to me, so surely it is posted somewhere on ILX, but since we watched a video of her at Jesse's halloween party - OMG guys did you read this? victoriajackson.com
She is fucking priceless. That website is the gift that keeps on giving.
― tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, that's what I've heard about Water for Elephants, too. I'm definitely in the mood for an entertaining book.

i just learned what monorchid means
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)
Here is what I have learned from Victoria Jackson:
Americans need to be educated about government, politics, and eschatology
Fox News is the only news show that even resembles journalism
If our country needed a black president, I would suggest . . . Alan Keyes
Our country became the greatest nation on earth because of it's reverence to God, and it's capitalism that was set up by our forefathers
Archaeology confirms the fact that the Bible is true
the evening winning lottery number for the Illinois State Lottery on Nov. 5 was the number "666".
― tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)
she actually asked to borrow it, after flipping through a couple parts (early on, like hal waiting for his dealer) and going "omg, that is how i think."
― some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)
what does monorchid mean?
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
A dog with one nut.
xp - oh, i just forced the book on people I knew. I suppose that is the crucial difference.
― tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)
By "nut" I mean "testicle."
I would really like to give Infinite Jest another go. I need to be in the right mood for it, though.

― some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)
I didn't like Water for Elephants. I was hoping it'd be an entertaining, quick read...but instead I found it kind of a bland, quick read. Definitely, there were some parts that were interesting, but for the most part....thbbbbbbbbtttt.
(it's been a long day of tedious tasks)
― sisut, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
Do you want to bring it this weekend? I can't promise I'll get it back to you before the end of the year, though.
