dunno, maybe the ecology here has been drained of some spirit, and we need to bring back the shitbirds, the malcontents, the full-on creeps, the solid and reliable trolls

dude (del), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

seriously, what did you hope to achieve by bumping this thread?

Basically, to stop the zinging for a second and say "hang on, can we talk about whether this is serious or not?" because I do not actually know.

I can no longer tell if people like nakhchivan and History Mayne are getting personal because they think it's funny or zingy, or if they have an actual problem. I have lost the ability to tell.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

"Shall we have a new board, poll" is a clusterfuck thread?

― Mark G, Monday, September 20, 2010 3:02 PM (2 minutes ago)

it's quick, shit got heated, i think it barely qualifies yeah

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

but like the chances of anyone falling out over it are zero so maybe not

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but dudes could have simmered down a bit

kinda bums me out b/c some of those dudes in question contributed good stuff when they weren't being full-on assholes. but they just... couldn't... seem to keep their worst impulses at bay

dude (del), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

kate i gotta say i've been fairly alright w/ you and i didn't like that you got banned

just trying to alert you to the fact you may not be a disinterested observer in the 'crankiness' you identify

please close this thread, it can't possibly achieve anything

otm

cambyrdsclosetvacuumsounds4fun (acoleuthic), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

well ppl still think the board's too rough, and others think it's cuddlestein. it's an ongoing process imo and i'd favour letting em all back in again and letting sb do the rest of it but that's not gonna happen.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

I think the answer is that ILX is less cranky than it was two years ago, and WAY less cranky than it was three to five years ago. Is it more cranky than it was two weeks ago? Dunno. I might not have been on many of the threads where the crankiness has been happening.

Kate I think you personally have been pretty cranky of late, and that's colouring your view of the rest of ILX. Part of that is because people have been being dicks and baiting you but also because you can be a pretty cranky person in general, even when they aren't really doing so. It's a bit chicken/egg really.

Don't really see where this is going to go other than everyone turning up to grind their usual meta axes.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 September 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

ugh, who is this "dude"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

It can achieve something, if it gets you to tell me, straight up, in plain English, what your problem with me is, instead of just sniping and zinging. Because that actually tells me something, as opposed to just confusing me.

I never pretended to be a disinterested observer, hence why I asked "IS IT JUST ME or is ILX cranky?" This presupposes the idea that it *might* be me that is cranky, not ILX as a whole. This why I'm asking if other people are noticing it, because that would answer whether it's me or ILX.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

he's a good guy mucking about. don't hate.

tbh so kate, imo the threads you've been on lately have been pretty cranky- not because of your sole input or anything, but you've been involved in a high % of the arguments that have been the most cutting. the rest of the place seems much the same to me?

that's not meant as a go at you.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

this should read 'a lot of the threads', sorry.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

FWIW I'm pretty cranky lately and it has undoubtedly shown in my posts independent of what anyone has or hasn't done to provoke it. And yes, that applies to my interactions w/you, kate, on the clusterfuck thread. A delicious combination of going off SSRIs, job dissatisfaction, Ohio weather woes and seeing shit from my mom on Facebook like "I'm flying this flag to oppose the Muslim worship center at Ground Zero.
I am the 482,601st person to fly the flag in opposition of Muslim mosque at Ground Zero. I hope 5 million will join me!" kinda puts me on edge.

yes, we all already know who doesn't like who, there's no particular reason to have yet another "here are all the ways in which I despise poster [x]" party

well, he's a troll but i for one approve. better to be a troll and at least know it imo.

illiterate mods are killing ilx (darraghmac), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

OK, fair's fair. I have been pretty cranky lately, and I am definitely in need of a holiday.

I am certainly aware that I often have quite different opinions - and strong opinions - to the seeming majority of ILX, and this often puts me on the defensive. I think this often *reads* as provoking clusterfucks or something like it, but I don't think having a differing opinion or defending that opinion is *necessarily* wrong or bad or something to be avoided for the sake of artificial consensus on a messageboard. Which is what it feels like nakhchivan is implying.

Anyway, I guess that's that. If it's me that's particularly cranky I should go do something more enjoyable with the rest of the afternoon. If I can find something.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

really don't see the point of this post. i dunno if that's unduly cranky or snarky.

Thanks, kkgvz -- and I don't want it to seem like I'm trolling for huggz or something, just that I seem to have only two gears lately: "Angry" and "frustrated." It sucks.

LOL at "leave Ohio." I bought a house, man, I'm gonna die here.

Shock and Awe High School (Phil D.), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

actually, that was way glib of me. i spent some time in lakewood/cleveland and cincinnati, and found good ppl there, etc.

that is not what i was implying, i like a lot of yr lengthier posts without necessarily agreeing with them, and i've said that before today

threads will get disputatious but it helps if they don't become unduly personalized/psychologized

i think it's like how our minds are sometimes filled with self-antagonistic arrows. prob most of us have occasional bouts of self-loathing. letting that contribute out of hand to our self-definition doesn't make sense. so much more so ppl's msg board output.

cbt ppl say the same thing, like nak, more eloquently.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 20 September 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Though, to be completely honest, I can never entirely shake the fear that some or indeed most people are pretty much always given the benefit of the doubt, but I very seldom get extended that same benefit, that there is always someone who has decided that I am "just a cranky person" and that the most negative or unpleasant or hateful explanation of my behaviour is the right one, and I could never just be being straightforward or playful or whatever.

But that *is* my latent paranoia, even if it does occasionally get backed up in fact.

(i.e. there is never ever a cuddlestein mountain for me to balance out the pile-ons)

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

there is always someone who has decided that I am "just a cranky person"

nah, bro

dude (del), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

xp see, that is what drives me crazy about you: you act like it's you vs. ilx-the-entity (which if that was true i'd wonder why you would bother posting here at all), yet any clusterfuck/thread you're involved in i ALWAYS see PLENTY of support for you!!!! even in the worst of it, ppl are backpedaling and apologising for upsetting you, or for posting things that might be misinterpreted.

just1n3, Monday, 20 September 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Things look very different when you are on the receiving end, rather than on the watching end. I think it's human nature to feel criticism more harshly than praise.

I don't think I've seen an apology or anything outside of the girl thread, nor have I actually *expected* one, for what it's worth, so I think that assessment is actually unfair and a little harsh? But whatever. This pair of posts will just leave you feeling a little more driven crazy and me feeling more generally criticised/disliked.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, justine OTM

master of retardment (ENBB), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

That's the thing, about feelings and fears, they are not about me saying "this is true" or "this is false", they are *feelings*. They are sometimes irrational, but that doesn't stop them from existing.

Kate: I sometimes *feel* like this. It might be paranoid, but that's how I *feel*.
Justine: You're wrong. You have *no right* to your feelings. (and you don't really belong here if you do actually feel that way.)

That's not "OTM" - that's someone telling me flat out "your feelings are INVALID p.s. I have no idea why you feel so invalidated all the time."

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)
