irn bru is aged in rusted barrels at the back of a family run industrial estate, giving it a delightful finishing kick .

the water that runs along the glasgow SPT river also helps with the flavour

Irn-Bru is famous for its bright orange colour. As of 1999 it contained 0.002% of ammonium ferric citrate, sugar, 32 flavouring agents (including caffeine—though caffeine is not listed as an ingredient on the Australian labelling—and quinine) and two controversial colourings (E110, E124). On 27 January 2010, AG Barr agreed to a Food Standards Agency voluntary ban on these two colourants, though have not set a date for when they will be replaced.[1] The beverage is advertised as having a slight citrus flavour, but many have differing opinions of the exact taste of Irn-Bru.

It is also the third best selling soft drink in the UK, after Coca-Cola and Pepsi, outselling high-profile brands such as Fanta, Dr Pepper, Sprite and 7-Up.

gonna stop derailing this vital thread, but O_o

Not much of a whisk(e)y drinker but I had a Balvenie not long ago that was memorable.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

i am literally drinking balvenie right now. very good it is too.

glenlivet just seems too generic right now

the first with the thirst

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

oh god, this insanely expensive tasty alcohol is appreciated by just too many similarly rich europeans :(

The sulky expression from the hilarious "Aubrey Plaza" persona (history mayne), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

t's ubiquitous, you literally can not go ANYWHERE without drinkig this whiskey

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah xacly xp

ilx needed some more bourgie anhedonia

nakhchivan, Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

^ can see why lj is fascinated tbf

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

he is easily fascinated

jura was another rly nice whisky btw

but srsly, i'm not sure glenlivet is any better than say jamesons frinstance

i'll admit i've only lately started paying more attention to whisky so i might look upon this post in a year's time as lj must on some his more jejune posts

nakhchivan, Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

jameson's is a fuckin good whiskey for a supermarket standard issue tbh

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

first use of 'jejune' on ilx is a searing tracer hand zing on darraghmac. dude goes through moments of real distaste for me

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

well, my first hearing ofit on ilx (or anywhere, prob)

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it is, but it's more expensive than most of them xxp

nakhchivan, Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

some day i will taste midleton, tho tbh i tried one of JJ& sons other special bottles lately (about a tenner more, aged 12 year or something) and didn't notice any difference.

jack daniels single barrel, though- totally different drink

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

unopened bottle of midleton sits on my shelf, where it's sat for three years.

waiting for the special-ist occasion

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

damn right

though it will have to be pretty special if you're saving an entire bottle tbh

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

i'd never have the patience to leave liquor unopened that long, even wine which would benefit from it

first world pathology, u could give it to a zambian and they'd cherish it til their dotage

nakhchivan, Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

This differing opinion of what a true whiskey consisted of culminated in a legal enquiry in 1908. It was a huge turning point in the history of whiskey. The Scottish blenders won the case and the blend became recognised in law as being whiskey. The Irish in general and Jameson in particular stubbornly continued with the traditional Pure Pot Still production process for many years and, to this day, a large proportion of Jameson is still composed of Pure Pot Still component. Jameson also produces a special limited edition Pure Pot Still Whiskey, Redbreast to celebrate the ancient Irish whiskey making craft.

would drink

Interestingly, the bar that sells the most Jameson whiskey annually is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota (USA): in 2008, the Local Irish Pub in Minneapolis sold 671 cases of Jameson, 22 bottles a day

would drink there

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

Only 50 casks are released each year, it is therefore both expensive and collectible. The whiskeys used in the blend are handpicked by the Master blender, all are triple distilled and have aged between 12 and 25 years in individually selected Bourbon or Sherry casks. As a new vintage is created each year, each differs slightly and has its own character.

yes, i want to try midleton

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah once it's open i'll go through it at a normal rate, but it's like, when do i open you???

i think what he meant was 'imagine if CAD waited for the birth of a firstborn to open this monumental bottle of whiskey, what untold damage could the extra investment in the father/son relationship do to the delicate bond?'

k¸ (darraghmac), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

that was my reading anyway. boy it's no fun doing that

k¸ (darraghmac), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

i c, duh

nakhchivan, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

k¸ (darraghmac), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

thinking about picking up a bottle of jim beam black as a cheap, all-rounder bourbon - thoughts? (my options are v. v. limited)

always be cozen (dayo), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

sorry i know what i like but other than that clueless. someone'll be along in a mo

k¸ (darraghmac), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i like jim beam

nakhchivan, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

ehhhh what are yr other options

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

four roses again? hmm I dunno, I'll have to do some legwork

always be cozen (dayo), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

i mean let's be real; it's quite difficult to make something that meets the u.s. classification of "bourbon" and sucks. but i am not crazy about the beams.

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, I could always drop some cash on laphroaig. but I just want something I can kick back with when I come home from work and not worry that all my money is going down my gullet.

always be cozen (dayo), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

how much would it cost in an average store in america? cuz it's about £18? for the black label in my local off license iirc but suspect it's cheaper there

nakhchivan, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

i've never had the four roses 80 proof but i love some of their other expressions. and iirc their 80 is regarded as the best 80 around these days.

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

guess I just want something full bodied and spicy
