really loved the episode where jake morgendorffer is addicted to milk.

I find it really hard to decide on the best Daria episode. For me it's a three-way tie between "Arts N'Crass" (Daria and Jane enter an art competition and have their painting censored), "Through a Lens Darkly" (contact lens episode) and "The Misery Chick" (jerk football hero visits Lawndale, dies).

rewatching this i am thinking of voting trent. the episode where he plays brittany's party, his reaction in seeing brittany in jane's room, the discussion about being below sub zero, 'every dog has its day', he's such a great character.

Heard about this. Tbh, it's a real shame.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 6 September 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)
It is a real shame, although they did make an effort to recreate the feel of the original soundtrack which mostly works. At some points it really jars, especially for the "Everybody Hurts" joke in the rock festival episode ("This is like that REM video..."); thankfully they rarely based jokes around the music.
― Duane Barry, Monday, 6 September 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)
I'm in the midst of re-watching the entire series, and it's going to take some hard thinking to figure out for whom to vote -- but certainly Jake is the front-runner.
― Falkor Johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)
Daria had me in tears for Boxing Daria. I think that may actually be one of the best five episodes of any television ever (w/ The Body, Last Exit To Springfield, the episode of the Sopranos where they get lost in the woods and whatever my favourite episode of Porridge is this week)

Trent is really the only cartoon character I've ever had a crush on, so I had to vote him.

Still have a crush on Jane tbh.
When Stacy does the magic trick with Upchuck is poss the best episode, def top 5.

― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)
the voices on the simpsons seem more well-integrated with the cartoons but every voice on Daria feels like MTV isn't paying them enough to give full lease of their spirit to the cartoon. Even caffeine dad.
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)
p true considering how many vox actors they went through with some characters
but then daria was always about that lol indie spirit of doing as much as you can while mtv was spending all its money on i dunno the osbornes

Just out of curiosity here, was Daria actually "big" in the US in general pop-culture terms? I suspect it was be more of a cult-following-only thing than a popular juggernaut like B&B (Daria wasn't really shown much in my home country). If somebody dressed up as Daria and Jane at a Halloween party like Perry and her friend there, would many people actually get the reference?
― Duane Barry, Thursday, 1 November 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)
Daria was part of the B&B, for one thing.

Sorry for huge wall of wiki text:
HideReception and legacyBy 1998, Daria was one of MTV's highest rated shows, with the network's manager Van Toffler viewing her as "a good spokesperson for MTV, intelligent but subversive".During her popular run on MTV, Daria was part of the Cool Crap Auction in 1999, giving an overview of the goods for auction and talking "live" to the winner of one prize.[18] Daria and Jane also hosted MTV's Top Ten Animated Videos Countdown, poking fun at MTV's cheap animation. At the end of the series run, she had an "interview" on the CBS Early Show with Jane Clayson.[19]Daria received positive reviews during its run. John J. O'Connor of The New York Times wrote of the series' premiere, "With this new series, Daria triumphantly gets the last laugh" and "As far as MTV and Beavis and Butt-head are concerned, Daria is an indispensable blast of fresh air. I think I'm in love."[20]Daria received a ratings share between 1 and 2 percent, about 1 to 2 million viewers.G.J. Donnelly of TV Guide, writing about the series' finale, lamented, "I already miss that monotone. I already miss those boots. ... Even at its most far-fetched, this animated film approaches the teenage experience much more realistically than shows like Dawson's Creek."[21] On the same occasion, Emily Nussbaum wrote at Slate.com that "the show is biting the dust without ever getting the credit it deserved: for social satire, witty writing, and most of all, for a truly original main character". She particularly singled out for praise that all the characters were heading "to very different paths in life, based on their economic prospects", giving the show an ambiguous end; "[the finale is] a bit of a classic: a sharply funny exploration of social class most teen films would render, well, cartoonish."[22]Internet reviewer Doug Walker listed this as his favorite TV show in his list of his 20 favorite TV shows, stating that the show "WAS high school" and that out of all 66 episodes, he only found three he didn't like.[23]AOL TV ranked Daria the fourteenth Best School Show of All Time, describing it as "a witty parody of the teenage experience".[24] In 2002, TV Guide ranked Daria number 41 on it's "50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time" list.[25]

I was totally going to go as Daria to a halloween party tomorrow. I'm kind of glad I didnt now because that bitch has outdone any attempt I would have made, and its gone viral all over my FB :(

I want to love those costumes more but tbh it's not that difficult to put together an amazing costume when you have a gigantic pile of money
that said, I completely applaud the idea AND that she went as Jane instead of Daria

I haven't watched this in forever but I often think about "the wind chill drops below sub-zero"
― JoeStork, Monday, 15 January 2018 07:00 (eight years ago)
the episode in the last season where Jane gets a new boyfriend and he's got a retrofetish and Daria actively calls him out on being nostalgic for a period of racism and misogyny is something I think about a lot in these days of "make America great again"
I wish the places where I watch this online would feature the episodes with the original soundtrack music, I think now I would be embarassed but at the time I remember loving hearing songs pop up by bands I was just discovering as a teenager

― JoeStork, Monday, 15 January 2018 19:15 (eight years ago)
I think they did an OK job with the substitute music, but there are some scenes I'll always associate with the original ST (eg Monaco's "What Do You Want from Me?" in the scene where Daria dresses up as Quinn). Party scenes in particular have been weakened by the OST absence.
It's kinda amazing how difficult it seems to be to find the original run anywhere
― Duane Barry, Monday, 15 January 2018 19:26 (eight years ago)
the scene were Daria is in the car and realises her feelings for Tom are developing, originally soundtracked by Saint Etienne's "Sylvie", was a highlight
― boxedjoy, Monday, 15 January 2018 22:52 (eight years ago)
There's a pretty decent rip of the entire show w/the original music out there in the dark.net.
― Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 20 January 2018 03:53 (eight years ago)
There's a new 2024 version of the Daria Restoration Project (new rips with the original music and edits) that's making the rounds out there. I found d/l links on Reddit pretty quickly.
