Robert Carlock writes on 30 Rock, He also wrote on Friends; This may explain the 'The one with..' phenomenon. It also makes me sad.

"phenomenon"? they titled one Friends-related episode as a reference to the Friends episode titles.

one of the only shows i can think of that can get away with casting these guest stars like this. UGH why is thursday four days away?

i still wish there were fewer guest stars. the cast is so strong on its own. still missing dr. spaceman.

yeah but from what i understand they desperatley need ratings, which usually means stunts like this, which in turn leads to "jumping the shark". thankfully, i don't see it as a negative for this show though.

maybe you guys haven't noticed this but every fucking sitcom has guest stars constantly, at least these days.

plus 30 Rock does the guest stars as much to add to their haul of Emmy nominations as ratings.

I think I had more laughs-per-minute this week than any episode so far this season, even if it was kind of chaotic.

i thought it was maybe the weakest ep so far, but still very good.

that joke would've been funnier if he HADN'T said "do I have a thing for black men" but instead just listed off handsome black men.

i liked the smiling and nodding and sibling reciting. it'd be nice if they were sticking to the studio a little though; ending up at eccentric celebrity guest steve martin's secluded country resort awaiting plot twists felt a little bit simpsons-go-tokyo. i like it when there's some kind of ridiculous backdrop of jenna's feature on the programme, etc.

Total comedy writing jujitsu tonight. Like, it wasn't the funniest episode by far, but it seemed like it at the time because every line that happened right before a commercial had me cracking the fuck up.

Thought Steve Martin was a bit muddled, somewhere between smug-stupid Martin and manic physical comedian Martin.

Anyway, this show always brings the funnies, so dug it.

Martin was pissing me off by the end, but then they brought the funnies after the credits with the Sexdolls save lives bit.

They did this in the first half of last season too to make room for guest stars.

one of the funniest bits last night was when they acknowledged that with a quick throwaway gag (Tracy saying something to Liz about "so you don't know anything about Jenna's problem with her father?" like there was a whole subplot about her we just never saw).

I kinda feel like 30 Rock is more like SNL than a sitcom in how it uses its cast, like if the writers don't come up with something for a particular actor to do that week, they just kinda hang back for an episode.

yes yes yes. loved this part for that exact reason. also "stop patriciding" was great. i'm sure you've all seen tracy morgan irl give interviews and such...i'm convinced he doesn't really have any lines on this show and also that he may not even know it's supposed to be a scripted comedy show - he just says what he would normally say in the situation.

i hate it when people say this. but i do think the writers do a good job of writing for him based on his humor and things that he probably has said/would say.
