weird synergy - I've never ever tried to "publicize" barrylutz beyond my friendz + here, but after redesigning the site a little bit and doing a few more than usual over the past week, I decided to email a few blogz that have covered animated gifs in the past to be like "hay i do this too, come and look". It's kinda weird because most of the well-known animated gifsters are people that loop film/tv clips, or a series of photo stills (like clouds moving across a sky, the sun rising, etc), which is cool, but when I try to get my stuff "out there" I think it kind of hits the taint of the internet because it doesn't really fit on an "art" blog, but it doesn't fit anywhere else either.

if anyone knows of a good place for me to email and say "hey look at my stuff and write a post about it sometime if you want" please let me know. so far I've just emailed

yeah, if you get a Tumblr people can easily follow your blog and thus see your updates in their dashboard without having to remember to specifically keep returning to your blog itself to see if you've updated. also, Tumblr makes it super easy for people to "reblog" your stuff, which will put your stuff on more people's radars

could on tumblr try to "like" one of my posts? I was messing around with the code for the notes, and I'm not sure if it's not showing up because no one has "liked" one of my posts (;_;) or because I fucked up the code!

also, slightly bummed that tumblr has problems with animated gifs wider than 500 px (http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/posting)

You can host the gif elsewhere and just use html to post the image, rather than uploading the gif to tumblr itself.

actually, scratch that, just to make things even more confusing, I think this is the situation:

I can link to an image in the html, and it will display as an animated image, just as it should. The problem is that when you create a post in tumblr, it has to be categorized (text, photo, video, etc). I can't categorize it as a photo and then just link to it in the HTML, because it gives me a "you need to upload a photo" error. I can categorize it as Text and post it, and it displays just fine - the only problem is that the image doesn't appear in the Dashboard. I don't want to do that, either, because then anyone following me will just a bunch of blank spots in their dashboard whenever I post something.

why are 21st century problems so, so lame? I'd rather have an oozing wound on the bottom of my calf from clearing brushwood or something

it's not a 500px limit that keeps it from animating, it's a 500kb limit. It would be totally fucking cool if a site dedicated almost entirely to hosting images had a fucking FAQ explaining this but hey you know, they've got more important things to worry about like letting people make sharks or cats avatars

The image that I've been having trouble posting is the one of admrl I posted above:

it's wider than 500px, but it's also only 405kb. But for some reason, it won't animate.

I tried another image wider than 500px, and it worked. But it's only 214kb.

So even though the documentation that tumblr has says "Since resizing animated GIFs is computationally intensive, large files (greater than 512K or wider than 500 pixels) may lose their animation if the upload server runs out of memory. Please avoid uploading unreasonably large animated GIFs", it seems like the limit is somewhere lower, less than 400, maybe?

now that you mention it, I think they may have lowered the limit recently because I'm positive it used to be 500kb but I had to re-size one down to under 400 the other day too
