San Francisco and what to do in it

heard the street food fest was a mess. just ridiculously overcrowded. not surprising tbh

went to stern grove; this was actually the first time I've ever made it out there for a stern grove festival show, holy shit is it always that crowded (I suppose it isn't for like, orchestra things)? I know it was the first warm day of summer this year but it was pretty insane. RW are my studio mates but I never ever go out and see them play, was cool that they got a crowd like that, except rude staff and general horrible crowding meant we split immediately after they were done, which was kind of a waste of our awesome free parking spot at grandma's across the street. Maybe "free" combined with "good weather" just brought absolutely everyone out.

did go to rockmake afterward which was nice and not crowded. I sound like an old man!

Did you take a lawn chair?

we took a blanket but there wasn't even a 1x1 patch of open ground

We had a good time, but had to sit off to the side, and left after RW. I spent most of the show with my son on my shoulders, avoiding the aisle-clearing bouncer dudes. What a beautiful day, though, for a change. Looks like we're getting a week's worth of good weather after this awful, awful summer.

anyways milo, weather in Dec is nicer than Jan. Plus you can see some of the holiday decorations downtown. Jan will have more retail sales. Less tourists but more conventions.

went this past february (mikeb, u weren't there were you? went for tina b's bday). it's kinda silly. it's a neat experience, but hella dated (like 60s dated). i didn't dislike my experience, but like mike says, go altered.

jaxon I wasn't at Tina's b-day (how high were you? ;) ) unfortunately but I've been to the Audium four or five times and yeah, you're OTM there. the performances don't differ much at all; you get the feeling this would have been incredibly avant-garde in 1970, today not so much. I remember thinking when I went the first couple of times in the late 90's that it would be an utterly fantastic place for an acid party. :D

Anybody else been to Nomu on Balboa and 5th?

It's NAMU and I've been 2x. Once was with a chef who the Namu chefs admire so we ate and drank like kings for the sum totale of $0.00 but a few months later I returned with 3 friends and we had a couple of their apps including their famous Korean Tacos and by the time I got home those Korean Tacos had run their course (and some) to a very unpleasant end. Never returned.

Oops, sorry. I was underwhelmed by the tacos, tbh, but their ramen was awesome, the collard green wrapped rolls were strange yet delicious, their tofu was out of this world, so unctuous, and the shitake DUMPLINGS! were great, too. Their pickle starters were excellent and the soba was good, too. I really liked it.

Namu is good, but I prefer Halu's cheaper and better ramen.

Halu indeed has DUMPLINGS!! THE JAPANTOWN OF THE INNER RICHMOND: DUMPLINGS!!!! but they are known as "gyoza".

Apparently there is some code somewhere which converts normal d u m p l i n g talk into DUMPLINGS!

Halu doesn't always have gyoza, but yes sometimes the DUMPLINGS! OF JAPAN are on the special board. They are fantastic when they do have them though.

Alex, do you have Jaxon's IM? He is doing a thinkpiece on USA remakes of foreign horror films and I told him that this is right in your wheelhouse.

I do have it and he should have mine too. I'm not a super expert on these things since a lot of the US remakes have sounded so faithful that I didn't bother seeing them.

I wonder what the US remake of DUMPLINGS! would be called though? MEATLOAF! HAMBURGERS! THIN-CRUST PIZZA! The mind boggles.
