Question: It seems that any old comment I make on anyone's posts, links, etc, shows up in everyone's feed...or at least, it shows up in my husband's feed. Is there any way I can turn this off?
― full of country goodness and green pea-ness (Abbbottt), Friday, 20 August 2010 03:40 (fifteen years ago)
Isnt that the idea tho? Im a bit confused.
Like if post on your wall, anyone who is looking at my feed sees that - but only if we're mutual friends, I think?
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Friday, 20 August 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)
Say I am friends with Satan, and also my dad, and Satan & dad are definitely not friends with each other. Dad hates that I'm buds with Satan and wants no reminders of this. Say Satan posts a hilarious photo of his bifurcated cock, and I post a comment about it. Even though Satan and my dad are not friends, my comment & Satan's cock both show up in my dad's feed. Ideally, only mutual friends of Satan could see that I appreciate his wit, but as it stands, it's showing up in feeds of people who don't know or care about Satan. That's basically what's happening right now (I comment on some high school friend's post but my husband can still see it even though he is not friends w/high school friend, making me think everyone can see it). I would like to know if there is a way to stop it.

Hm yeah that shouldnt happen should it? I cant work out where yo'd set that tho, I had a squiz in the privacy settings but geez they dont make it easy to change shit.
LOL @ example, BTW!!! :D

Actually, this does not happen, at least not the way you describe it. Can you give a specific example of what is troubling you? There may actually be a way to fix it, believe it or not.

i think it does happen, if the person whose wall you posted to has a public profile
― just1n3, Friday, 20 August 2010 04:54 (fifteen years ago)
If Satan makes his cock photo a wall post on your wall, then yes, your dad can see it, because it's on your wall, and it shows up the same way as if you posted it yourself. I do wish people would stop doing this. I often delete posts like this, and if it's a friend I care about keeping, I may send then a message explaining why I nixed their post off my wall.
― “Going on tour with Midnight Oil” and more outmoded masturbation slang (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2010 04:56 (fifteen years ago)
Satan should keep his cock on his own wall, and then your dad can't see your comments about it. As long as he's not friends with Satan.

Im sorry the analogy example is killing me, here.

but i think abbott is talking about when she posts to ~someone else's~ wall - then it will show up in her non-mutual friends' feeds if that person has a public profile
― just1n3, Friday, 20 August 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)
I guess that kind of makes sense. I dont very often see people in my feed commenting on something by someone I dont know at all though, so Im kind of puzzled.
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Friday, 20 August 2010 05:22 (fifteen years ago)
Ive just scrolled 3 pages of news feed and only seen one person-to-wall post and that was to a mutual friend.. and no comment-to-photo at all, weird.
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Friday, 20 August 2010 05:24 (fifteen years ago)
I'm confused. I think you guys are doing things that I don't do. Or else I'm just lost.
― “Going on tour with Midnight Oil” and more outmoded masturbation slang (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:19 (fifteen years ago)
Im confused too. If we could see everyone's photo comments in a news feed, that'd be all the feed would be full of, surely?
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Friday, 20 August 2010 08:47 (fifteen years ago)
I think it may be just comments on status updates - I commented on a friend's bifurcated cock status the other night and it appeared on my wife's news feed despite him not being on her friends list.
― a harshbuzz to my manpain (onimo), Friday, 20 August 2010 08:52 (fifteen years ago)
I get this in the 'top news' feed but not the 'most recent'. Lots of telling me that friend X likes the link of non-friend Y and such.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 20 August 2010 09:47 (fifteen years ago)
oh hey, i think youre right! I never look at top news cos it is so cut down and pointless, but I just did then, and wow, I'm seeing few things I wouldnt usually - yes, wall comments to people I dont know. Hrm. Curious.
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Friday, 20 August 2010 09:51 (fifteen years ago)
seeing A few things, sorry.
Yeah, that's what happens in top news. I don't really think there's anyway to change that on your end Abbott.
― o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Friday, 20 August 2010 10:42 (fifteen years ago)
But if he switches to "most recent" view he shouldn't see that anymore.

It's really weird being Facebook friends with two people who had a fight in high school and never spoke to each other again. Then again that is what it was like in high school.
― i just like barbecue rib, whatever (u s steel), Friday, 20 August 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)
It's really weird having 20+ mutual friends with someone who has decided never to speak to me again, and having her avoid me on friends' comment threads. She's really sticking to her guns. I pissed her off right and proper, apparently. About 12 years ago. At what point does this become petty on her part, I wonder?
― “Going on tour with Midnight Oil” and more outmoded masturbation slang (kenan), Friday, 20 August 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)
I guess I will just have to stop saying things that I wouldn't want 100% of my friends to read.
― full of country goodness and green pea-ness (Abbbottt), Friday, 20 August 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)
They're not even cock-related things, fwiw.
I just added anyone who I don't expect to understand my jokes (i.e. family, people I knew in elementary school who added me) to a list and changed the privacy settings for that list so they can't see anything I post or comment on, nor any of my other friends that aren't on the list's comments.

u s steel, yeah, that is weird. also weird to have someone unfriend you and then three years later friend you again, tho you've barely talked since the unfriending occurred.

New feature I hate: when you're going through photo albums there will sometimes be, to the right, a sort of "since you're always snooping on this person's page, here's a photo album they're in that you might want to try looking at when you're done with this one!" suggestion.
That's the next evolution in Facebook, the site will suggest clever ways of stalking and snooping that users haven't already figured out.
― Cunga, Monday, 23 August 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
this is related to the newish "friends online" sidebar - that shows a handful of "key" friends' online status
― sarahel, Monday, 23 August 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)
Hasn't that been around for ages? I use that a lot for chatting to mates.
― ailsa, Monday, 23 August 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)
it's been around a while - but it used to just list everyone in alphabetical order - now you have the option of the full list at the bottom right or this side bar with the select few
― sarahel, Monday, 23 August 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)
I wouldn't be surprised if someday we might see features like:
"Susan just checked into Sam's Coffee, half a mile from your current location. Get yourself down there within 15-25 minutes and mention Joni Mitchell, her sister's upcoming birthday party and her new haircut. Wear a polo shirt and jeans." - Facebook Suggestions.

Facebook Questions
Ask Any QuestionAnyone can answer your question, which means you can tap into the collective knowledge of the millions of people on Facebook. And because your question appears right in your friends' News Feed, you'll also get answers personalized just for you.
Kinda nifty. Although judging by one of the first questions I see being asked: "Why is public opinion so out of step with the scientific consensus that anthropogenic climate change is something to be taken seriously?" we can now all look forward to seeing our close friends and family engaging in heated debate on divisive and hatred-inspiring issues. Can't wait!

I only ever see completely random (no one I know) questions/answers pop up. I dont know if anyone I know has used it. Oh except that one time JBR asked "how is babby formed", heh.

One of my FB friends has just announced in a status updates that a "cull of his friends is coming". Should I be worried? Should I perhaps, like, report his posting to the nearest police station? He may have joined the Trenchcoat Mafia after all, and do you think I could live with the pang of guilt, like a millstone, if it turns out that he really is the next Michael Ryan, or Derrick Bird, or Raoul Moat? "The triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing", as Edmund Burke reminded us. Advice pls.

― rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 12:08 (fifteen years ago)
You shouldn't try and STOP THEM or anything.
yeah it seems really quite rude and attention seeking. cull away but there's no need to make a song and dance about it.
"top news" is so completely random these days. i can't work out why the bulk of it is on there.
― jed_, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)
I think if anyone I knew on facebook cared enough to announce a 'cull' they would get the culling first.
How's THAT for passive aggressive!
― Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 12:15 (fifteen years ago)
I would like to thank ILX for counseling me away from making a courtesy culling announcement. Nobody seems to have noticed that they are no longer my friend, or if they noticed, they didn't seem to care. Except for one dude who keeps trying to add me again, but he'll eventually get the hint.
