But yes, I hate that. I hate when I make a brisk but relatively comfortable walk to the station through the hot air outside and then have to stand there with my slightly elevated metabolism in the hotter air of the station while the platform gets more and more crowded and the train is nowhere in sight.

Bali Eiffel Tower Hai (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 13 August 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

No way man that's my favorite part of the subway. And when the train pulls up, it's one that doesn't even run on that fucking line, and you get to make the exciting decision of "Where will this E go next!!! Should I get on it??"

Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Friday, 13 August 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

Uggggggh. My commute is now L to Un Sq and then 4/5 uptown. US is a traffic jam of reatards AND the 4/5 area is a fucking OVEN. It's unbelievable. I'd rather wait 20 mins on the L platform than be stuck behind someone who can't climb the stairs from the 4/5.

It really makes me feel for the elderly and/or infirm, they have no other options than to struggle through the subway system and I'm not unsympathetic but DAMN when you miss your train by .7 seconds in August it's enough to make a person forget every compassion.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Friday, 13 August 2010 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

You know the other great thing about the EZ-bake oven platform is that it really brings out the funky terrarium aroma that has permeated the subway system in recent times.

Bali Eiffel Tower Hai (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

it's kind of amazing how hot the turnstiles are at my stop

Laurel, I feel better to know that I am not the only that experiences rail rage like that.

There is some great Nabokov quote that I'll never be able to find about there being no greater hate than that for the broad back in front of you in the unmoving queue.

I'm pretty astonished at how inefficient the MTA is

dayo, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

like even if they hiked the fare to 2.50, you would need to ride the MTA more than 52 times a month to make it worthwhile

dayo, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

I ride it 2-6 times a day, including weekends, I bet well over 100/month on average.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

you might as well hook the MTA up to one of your veins

dayo, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

like even if they hiked the fare to 2.50, you would need to ride the MTA more than 52 times a month to make it worthwhile

the average unlimited ride use is 59 times a month tho

iatee, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

it's gonna be $104, I think

iatee, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

the real answer is to blow the MTA up and start again

dayo, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

MTA might not be an A+ operation, but the biggest problems = albany.

ooo ttt mmm

my office is in midtown now instead of Wall Street, I've switched up my commute eight different ways to not transfer in Union Square

Grand Central is pretty damn bad too (can't avoid that one, it's where I get off)

max, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

Hi, dmr!! I get off at Grand Cent too, I walk through the main room to get to my build instead of going outside. A little beauty never hurt a day.

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER PASS BETWEEN CARS

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/man_falls_from_train_dies_GJcrJrhN46Dl5aYtpDF8LN

A man was killed by a 6 subway train in Manhattan early Saturday morning, according to MyFoxNY.com.
It happened at the Lexington Avenue & E 96th Street station on the Upper East Side.
1010 WINS reported that the man had tried to pass between cars of the train. He apparently fell and was dragged by the train.

Every time something like this happens I think about being that actual person, and trying to go between the cars, and actually falling and realizing that you were probably about to die and actually being dragged by a subway car knowing your life was about to end in a matter of seconds

three weeks pass...

hey guys the Q train only comes once a half hour and they're cutting back service left and right but at least you'll be able to talk on the phone like a douchebag

not that this will not come in handy at times

but come on

"For too long the subway system has been an information black hole in our lives," Walder said in a statement.

now what will happen to the tradition of everyone pulling out their phone when they get to the Manhattan Bridge to text "I'm on the bridge"

dmr, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

Overheard on Times Square 7 platform:
"A skillful conductor can manipulate those doors so that they are either in or they're out"
"I'm not that skillful yet"
"Soon you will be. You will be the master, you will be the SENSEI!"

redd cool card-pitt (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 October 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

The monthly is what I care about. I need my unlimited card, not a limited monthly.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 October 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

well enjoy your $104 monthly

max, Thursday, 7 October 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

fuck this -- let's tax cigarettes an extra $5 instead

mookieproof, Thursday, 7 October 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

lets execute the mta board

max, Thursday, 7 October 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

I shrug at the raise, but I heard they were EITHER going to offer an unlimited for $104 or a 90-trip card for less, which wd fuck ppl who like to leave home on the weekends.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 October 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

lets execute the mta board

mta board sure isn't responsible for killing congestion pricing, isn't in control of how much dedicated transit $ albany decides to steal and...it's run by relatively competent people! not that MTA is blameless but this was basically inevitable.

$104 monthly card is still the best transit deal in america.

iatee, Thursday, 7 October 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

ps I steal all my arguments from benjamin kabak (secondavenuesagas.com/) but there seriously isn't a better informed dude on this subject and everyone should read that blog regularly

iatee, Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah w/r/t 'best transit deal' - I mean, ask people in the bay area or LA if they'd be willing to pay...$3.50 a day...for an extensive 24/7 subway and bus system. one where you can go from the rockaways to the bronx for the same price as going anywhere else. I have friends in the bay area who have a $8 daily commute - and they don't have an unlimited pass to show for it.

although $104 sucks and def is gonna hit me, the fact that they're keeping it unlimited is 10x more important in the long run.

iatee, Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

$104 monthly card is still the best transit deal in america

yeah, but, what with new york being so far and away the most public-transport-utilising city in america, isn't it self defeating to start fucking with the ridership like this? there were some pretty good discussions on ilx amid the fare increase debacle last year about the cyclical nature of keeping costs down (leading to increased ridership and revenue) versus increasing costs (lower ridership, more transport on the road, less efficient buses, etc etc). it should be ringfenced to some degree because it's so overwhelmingly and positively used by the people in the city.

i know nothing about this kinda thing so going to check out the blog link btw, i accept corrections on the above.

inimitable bowel syndrome (schlump), Thursday, 7 October 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

it's not 'fucking with the ridership' it's 'trying to pay the bills'! there's nobody at the MTA who's secretly gleeful that they get to screw the riders, and it's not like they get raises w/ every fee increase.

like the large majority of transit operations, fees only pay a fraction of the costs, so money is either gonna come from the state/new taxes or from ridership. the state underfunds the most public-transit-utilising city in america - this is a political problem.
