Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:51 (twenty years ago)

yesterday i looked at this thread as i couldn't remember how long to roast my sparagus for. it was good.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

been having it, been loving it

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

just had asparagus and lemon risotto. it was good.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

tonight we made asparagus pancakes with hollandaise sauce. it was good, but nigella let us down badly. DO NOT FOLLOW HER HOLLANDAISE RECIPE AS IT WILL CURDLE AND YOU WILL HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN. the larousse saved us, anyway.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Today I bought eight packs of asparagus for 5 pence each from Tesco. We had some tonight, steamed with a bit of lemon butter and some black pepper. Breakfast tomorrow involvng poached eggs. Grilled and tossed into a salad for lunch (we had a roast chicken tonight, so lots of chicken to throw in too). Other things to be decided.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

ailsa, you live near a wondrous tesco. all we ever got on reduced offer at ours were dented healthy living ready meals and suspiciously bulging packs of meat.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Now that we've decided not to move, it's time to plant an asparagus bed.

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 01:36 (twenty years ago)

My Tesco is wondrous, I know. I also got a basil plant for 10p and a punnet of apricots for 10p yesterday. But it was the asparagus which had me jumping for joy. I just cleared the shelf of it, and no-one batted an eyelid, I was expecting them to tell me to leave some for other people, but no. Hurrah!

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 08:08 (twenty years ago)

teeny, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

I love seeing this thread title come back around.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

I love it SOOOO much and everyone that I know, knows how much I love it.
When I was in college, my boyfriend bought me an entire wooden crate of asparagus for my birthday!!! It came with a big pink ribbon and bow on it (in hind sight, I shoulda married that one *sigh*) .

Bake/gril it w/olive oil and slices of garlic and seas salt - it gets all nutty and brown and yummy delicious. I wish I had some now.
This time of year has everything I love - asparagus, spring, longer warmer days (daylight savings coming soon)

Wiggy Woo, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I misssss living around ditches and riverbanks where it just grew all crazywild & free asparagus party for all. Meh!

I liked the asparagus episode of Iron Chef America the other day. I have not seen the contestant win in forever, tho.

Abbott, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

omg this is the best vegetable by about fifty gazillion light-years

unfished business, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

I would eat it prepared any of the above ways! And then the weapons-grade piss! Why does no other food do that, even foods that are smellier than pre-eaten asparagus, like garlic or stinky cheese?

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

the urine smells are half the fun

unfished business, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

Doesn't anyone else have Google? Asparagus has a sulfur type of compound in it that's released by the digestive process. Supposedly some people don't break it down, and others actually lack the ability to smell the sulfuric odor! The rest of us get a nice surprise after eating it.

mh, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have Google.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

jergïns, Monday, 30 April 2007 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

Crisp white wine, very cold like a spanish vino turbio or something green and crunchy from the veneto or ice cold vodka.

I live close to HUGE AGRICULTURAL AREA now so asparagus has been cheap and plentiful for a couple of weeks now. I love to stir fry it with finely diced chicken, peanuts, shallots, and Thai basil, chili sauce, fish sauce, white pepper, and dried coriander with some lime juice at the end.

But truly roasting in hot oven with olive oil and salt, finished with some lemon or balsamic vinegar is the best possible way. Not to mention easy as hell.

joygoat, Monday, 30 April 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

My tea: Oven-roasted sparrowguts served with scrambled eggs on a thick slice of home-made bread (chives added to egg to made it less breakfasty). It was all the delicious.

robster, Monday, 30 April 2007 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the idea, ILX. Dinner was cold poached asparagus with poached eggs and lemon-mustard sauce.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:46 (nineteen years ago)
