that's not really very funny to those of us still trying to shift the man-boobage tbh :(

ha, not really sure which would be less dignified, a bro or nipshields. otoh, by fitness fascist standards i have a little natural gyno even at 10% body fat, so other than plastic surgery, i just have to deal.

Trust me, the 100+ degree Texas heat is no kinder and/or more manageable.

I run at Town Lake! I don't know why it's only a problem for me in winter. Dry skin, I guess.

hardest run ive ever done, i think- 12 miles, 3000 ft of climbing at about 10%. beautiful views, but really hard to appreciate. took forever. preparing to ice hell out of knees.

i can't believe you max out at 160bpm running grades like that. i hit 190 running over bridges!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

i tried hard to keep it under control. no walking, but obv- it was only a notch above powerhiking in some places.

max hr's are weird. when im fairly conditioned, 165 or so is it. i did 400m sprint repeats the other day and i couldnt get over 162 iirc. when im out of shape though? i can probly hit 175.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Sunday, 8 August 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

I hit 200 when I'm sprinting! Running at an easy pace, like slow enough to chat with somebody while I run, I end up around 175bpm. I'll be interested to see if it drops a bit when the temperature goes down below 90.

did 5mi yesterday then swam across a lake, pretty fn sweet

man I have fallen off the wagon into not running again. just don't think I am the type of person who enjoys running (as someone who participated on his school's x-country team)

dyao, Monday, 9 August 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

i have fallen off the run wagon too but have signed up for another half mara in early september so need to get back to it old school

Aerosol, Monday, 9 August 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

'week' off. hmmph. i'm about a month off so far.

tho i've been footballing twice a week so hopefully not fully back to where i started

"It's far from 'loi' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Monday, 9 August 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

After my half marathon debacle, ran 6.5 on Saturday. Im desperately trying to make my long run distance, but I'm having trouble because of it band pain. So i tried 1:1 min run walk. Was supposed to go 12 but started to feel a twinge and shut it down immediately. Resuming regular training today.

Not sure how my next long runs are going to go. I've got 14 scheduled for next Saturday.

Marathon is 2 months away....7&;$:@(&:

Jeff, Monday, 9 August 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

while my legs ankles and feet feel pretty good despite some serious downhill singltrack, i learned that foam slides are a bad call for my fatigued feet. i was doing some shopping yesterday after the run, and my arches in front of my heel began to ache and ache. once i put normal shoes back on, everything was a-ok, and no real problem today.

knee bands

Aerosol, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

Orthopedists say the bands do appear to help relieve pain temporarily but they don't solve the underlying problems.

So, what's the point then?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

it allows you to continue running, get to the start line, achieve your racing objective, and get a head start on a knee replacement?

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, thats why i used it, but i also got tendonitis in my foot, and they didnt have a strap for that. i did try taping the fuck out of it for a week, but the pain was still horrendous, so i gave up.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

I've enjoyed running in the heat this week. I've been doing a 1:1 run walk ratio to try and avoid itb pain, and it's working out pretty well. Still feels stupid though. I should be running outright. Scheduled for a 14 miler this weekend. That's definitely beyond the threshold in which my itb starts hurting. Probably won't make it the whole way.

Jeff, Thursday, 12 August 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

Ran 7 yesterday. I have a 30k (18.6 miles) on Saturday, thinking about jumping up to the 60k (37.2 miles), though. Would definitely be more challenging. 30k is a guaranteed finish, 60k is a long shot but obv. the greater challenge.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 12 August 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

Obviously anything less than 60k would be a failure. Go for it.

Jeff, Thursday, 12 August 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

You should run badwater next year.

Jeff, Thursday, 12 August 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

Hah!

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

11 miles today, was supposed to be 14. Ended the same way all my long runs end, with a hot knife stabbing me in the side of my knee. At least it's predictable!

Jeff, Saturday, 14 August 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

Go shorter next time!

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 14 August 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Not really an option if I want to finish this damn marathon in 2 months. Some way, some how I've got to get up to 26.2 miles.

Ortho appointment on Monday.

Jeff, Saturday, 14 August 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I should just shut everything down and not run again until 10/10/10 and just try and complete it.

Or maybe I should just run once a week, only doing moderately long runs.

Or maybe I should just do short runs.

Or maybe I should take up knitting.

Jeff, Saturday, 14 August 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not even running at this point though. I'm doing a 1 minute slow run, 1 minute walk. To just delay the onset of the knee knife.

Jeff, Saturday, 14 August 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

I'd probably end up stabbing my it band with a knitting needle.

Jeff, Saturday, 14 August 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe next long run I'll do 30 second intervals of run/walk. At the very least that is mentally exhausting.

Did anyone else run today????

Jeff, Saturday, 14 August 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

Jeff, what you are doing sounds like madness to me. If you are having pain, you should be running fewer, not more miles? And why would you even attempt a marathon in two months given your current condition? It sounds like you want your legs to break off at the knees. Am I way off the mark with these comments?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 15 August 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

There are really no serious health risks with running with ITBS, other than the onset and continuation of pain. I have been improving; 2 months ago there is no way I could have gotten to 11 miles. I'm just trying to make it through my marathon. I probably won't complete it, but maybe I can make it a half. After that I'll probably take a couple of months off.

So you're probably not that far off the mark. I do have a runners irrational reasoning for these sort of things.

And then as soon as I think I can go again, I'm going to pick a marathon for next year to make up for all the crap I've dealt with this year.

Jeff, Sunday, 15 August 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

Did anyone else run today????

Oh yes. I ran the 60k race mentioned above (upgraded from 30k at the last possible chance). It was alternately the most painful and transcendent run of my life. Really, really awesome. No more long runs for me, though, until I get my chafing issues under control. I'm in lots of pain but my legs feel great (considering I was running just 9 hours ago), it's the chafing issues that have me sidelined on the couch/bed all day today. Yikes. Ouch. Etc.

So you're probably not that far off the mark. I do have a runners irrational reasoning for these sort of things.

Well, as long as you have the lowdown on whatever is causing the pain. I'm mostly going off all the running books I read at work that embrace the new less-is-more theory of training for races. And are also pretty explicit about "no pain no gain" being the dumbest slogan ever coined, at least in terms of running. I'm up around 6-7 miles now on my long runs, and it's hard to stop knowing I could easily get up to 10, but I'm trying to discipline myself and not go past my training schedule.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 15 August 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

actual lolz

xp

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Sunday, 15 August 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

12 easy miles today, mostly on dirt. not much hill work, mostly gradual. perrrrrfect weather, like 85 degrees, breezy and sunny. i had taken the whole week off running, my theory right now is allowing 1 week in 4 to allow knees and ankles to chill. i still ride my bike about 125 miles/week tho. now i'll have 3 more weeks of building w/ intensity, then a one week of light light stuff, and ipr!

ilxor, that is scary, i cant imagine running that long.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Sunday, 15 August 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

I really am obsessed about this shit. If I wasn't injured, I totally would be kicking ass right now.

Jeff, Sunday, 15 August 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

this mile by mile route description is sorta freakin me out:

Mile 5.45– Lower Camp Bird bridge (9755 ft.), spanning Sneffels creek. At this point the runner might philosophize a little and consider just where he or she is in this effort called the Imogene Pass Run. At this bridge you have climbed 1945 feet (net) of elevation in 5.45 miles, at an average of 356 ft./mi., or 6.8% gradient overall. To reach Imogene Pass from here you must climb 3365 feet in the next 4.60 miles, at an average of 731 ft./mi., or 13.85% gradient overall. Your effort so far has simply been a warmup. The steep gradients of the named hills below you are now less than the average gradient ahead of you.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Monday, 16 August 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

i now know i can do 10% for a while, and 15% a little bit. but 14% for 4.5 miles at 10000-13000 ft is daunting.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Monday, 16 August 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

I ran a shorter route yesterday (~ 7 km instead of my usual 10 - 12 km) because the heat was ridiculous. I think I'm starting to realize that any muscle fatigue I feel the next day is more closely related to the heat than anything else.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 16 August 2010 09:00 (fifteen years ago)

i was caught in heavy rain and hail today towards the end of a 10k. it actually felt really great. i was listening to sleigh bells and felt an intense burst of energy and aliveness, running hard with the hail bouncing off my shoulders

sonderborg, Monday, 16 August 2010 09:35 (fifteen years ago)

I love running in the rain!

seandalai, Monday, 16 August 2010 10:39 (fifteen years ago)

Ilxor, was that the longest race you've run?

Jeff, Monday, 16 August 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

9 miles in 1:09:55 today, felt good but had a bit of a sore stomach in the last mile. probably just a diet thing but will keep an eye on it for my 1/2

speaking of which half marathon is in 3 weeks now, feeling good about it actually

hopa dreams (cozen), Monday, 16 August 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Ilxor, was that the longest race you've run?

Yup, by 11 miles more than a standard marathon. Really hilly and rocky, too. Effort level kinda felt like a double-marathon or so.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Monday, 16 August 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

For comparison's sake, I ran the first 18.6 mile loop in 4:55 or so. Whereas a marathon (26.2 miles) three weeks prior took me 5:10. While it's about 7.5 miles less per loop, it takes about the same amount of time due to the difficulty of the terrain.
