Mastermind Episode IV: A New Hope

N., Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

MM4 = MM!! It all fits!! The whole story there for all to read (I saw this when researching earlier in the day, but oh!! I totally missed the significance...).

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

it is an allegory of the post-war history of korea, north and south

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

note how n. has rendered MasterMouse an unperson in this revisionist scandal

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Explain the Grand Mastermind and SENHA conundra.

N., Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"good evening my dear - you do look lovely. fancy a game of improved mastermind?"

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i was going to suggest that the amt of women visible on the cover are testiment to how truly masterful any given mastermind is (hence the grand mastermind having two - at his FEET no less) but that certainly doesn't explain the presence of the snivelling dickwad in the Royale Fiasco

mark yr proposed cover would have deterred me from yahtzee forever

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Grand MM and Senha are both MM3 dicking around w.cocktail waitresses/models again. In Senha, you only see MM3's hand: the "guy" in the mask is also a woman, dressed up.

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mebbe royale mastermind should be excluded from the speculation because it is clearly a different game anyway

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

GF1 is the true mastermind, as explained above: she had MM2&3 rubbed out and allowed MM1 to do the MousterMind deal. When Mickey took full charge, she fought back in the virtual realm with a vast computer and digitally generated "solo male hero" images. Her adopted children — one of whom is androidal — now front her rule.

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

hasbro's own yoko

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Note how MM1 symbolically deflates, down the sequence of the pictures.

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

ahem "speculation"?

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry i got stuck here

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

My gut feeling is that mark s has completely underestimated the significance of SENHA. I believe it may even be the key to the whole saga. And is the Rodin's Thinker MM any more than a rogue marketing strategem?

N., Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the thinker one is a clear and deliberate FUCK YOU to whoever possessed ownership of the generally accepted mastermind visage

it was a failed attempt at independence which ultimately proved deadly (GF1 doesn't eff around you see)

this explains why subsequent reissues tidily returned to the standard MM blueprint

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah but i'm right that it's a woman in drag, no?

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

SENHA i mean, not "the thinker"

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

more key semiotics:

in the early GF1/MM1 phase (which note represent the SECOND actual mastermind historically: MM2 was the first, as seen only in poor ly reproduced pix), the words "mastermind" are tilted to square off with GF1's body. In SENHA — which represents one of MM3's indulged silly-ass games — the word "SENHA" is tilted exactly NOT to square off with anyone. Also it is an anag of "ashen", which is how MM1 looked when he gazed on such poltroonery.

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark p, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

In Supersonic Mastermind, the red brainwaves clearly emanate from the head of SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED, Akasha of Dreadful Aspect. I assume Mickey is a sinister glyph chosen for himself by her brother-lover Enkil, who she detests and battles eternally (and it's mutual, obv).

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark: that is another glyph for Enkil. Mickey has absorbed MM1, and adopted his persona; delbierately sloppily (the head is obviously cut out and stuck on). Menace is directed at the children, who represent Akasha's adoptive androids. One wonders if the blode isn't Enkil's mocking figure for his sister Akasha, knowing how she'd loathe to be cast as a jollu blonde in a tight orange sweater.

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

breaking up... signal breaking up... must spell precisel... brea... save y.. selv...

mark s, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark s will you write my book for me please?

thanks

*boggles* This thread is its own microcosm.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

God I love this game! played it when we were young, the brown plastic board and those coloured pins. When I grew up I could never find someone to play it with me as much as I wanted - that was just a paper version I mean you don't need the equipment obviously (one variation I think is called cows and bulls, with a bull being the equiv of the black peg, right col right position, and the cow being the white) but I guess it is nicer to see the colour combos but you could easy rig that up on your own too. I'm going to see if there's anywhere I can play this online...

This was my favourite thread this year. You have a week to change my mind.

i am so sorry i didn't read it the first time around. thanks for the revive nick (and i'm sorry but with the current depleted pool of posters i can't see this being surpassed within a week)

minna (minna), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 15:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

back in the 70's this game helped confirm that I was colourblind - I always got the green & brown ones mixed up. not that they all looked the same, but I'd call the green ones 'brown' and vice versa. to make it more confusing, artificial and natural light reversed the situation (think it was natural light that made me correctly identify those colours).

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 17:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

it seems clear to me that Senha contains actually the senha to the whole saga. and notice how in all ases since its the brasilian version, it contains the cheesiest moustache + cigar combination

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Thursday, 26 December 2002 03:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

YES some other people actually played this. In the 80s, this game and CAN'T STOP (does anyone rem that game?) were my life.. now years after puberty you all are making me look at the cover picture is such a dirtier way, god bless you

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 26 December 2002 16:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm home for Christmas; turns out Mom gave away my old version of Mastermind.

:(

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 26 December 2002 18:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Good lord, my mind is reeling from this thread. Thanks for reviving it as I'd missed it first time around.

I'd never seen all those different versions, just the first one which I think is still lingering in a cupboard but missing most of the pins.

I am thinking of creating a 21st century Mastermind box using ex-marine as MM4 and weird devil girl as GF4 with photoshop. Is this wise?

Sorry MM5 and GF5 - I lack mark s's encyclopaedic knowledge of the saga.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:06 (twenty years ago) link

I think weird devil girl = MM5 (actually MM4 since as established* above "MM4" = MM1) and marine = GF4 (not GF5)

(*Establishment harder to follow since sinister yet telling disappearance of relevant picture evidence)

I feel as if this woman knows all, but is not telling. Yet what part in the saga does she herself play, if any? If only mark s were here.

I remember loving this game, but I couldn't tell you a thing about how it's played.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:57 (eighteen years ago) link

the polish couple, far-flung minions at best, exploited the lack of media openness behind the iron curtain as then was to pose as MM3 and GFwhatever (though -- as most of the world at that time -- they actually assumed MM2 to be MM1): for a short while they diverted much of the local operation's proceeds into their own deep denim pockets

the matriarch GF1 dispatched the ever-efficient GF2 to sort matters out when she learnt of the clumsy goings-on

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:05 (eighteen years ago) link

ok this is how i remember the missing (alba or anyone else to confirm plz)

Mastermind: The Next Generation = two kids but no adults?

The Eight = includes Super-Sonic (reposted CB just now); Grand Mastermind (ditto); Senha (but not the version I just reposted: features a hand and someone in a mask?); a rodin's thinker issue; and four others? -- i kinda assume replications of the classic format) (i don't think mine at 11.53 and cb's at 11.57 were included in the eight)

but what was "another piece in the puzzle" and who was the "woman who knows all" (posted by n and alba respectively)?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:30 (eighteen years ago) link

these are some of the eight i think: [images moved up-thread by obsessive moderestorator]

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:39 (eighteen years ago) link

i will piece these back together tomorrow and delete repeats

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I was going to say. It's my fault cause I posted the images on my now defunct ISP space. I think I still have the files on my HD to slot into place on, say, my Flickr account, which should be pretty permanent. I WILL EMAIL YOU.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:54 (eighteen years ago) link

hurrah!1 eleven

i may also hyper-abusee the system tudy up the MM1/MM2 confusion which tbh baffles me as much as anyone -- all it is is that i am inconsistent in my naming principle: viz am i using the Real Actual Historical Chronlogy or the Appearances Chronology (ans=i switch around arbitrarily)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link
