Oh and in between see 'too much light makes the baby go blind' at 7 p.m. and when it's over at 8 go around the corner to the hopleaf. That would be a fine sunday.
― Eazy, Thursday, 13 December 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)
Or you could reverse those, since there's no better time to be at Hopleaf than Sunday in the late afternoon.
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)
Man, neither "I'm Not There" nor "The Mist" are going to fit into my schedule this afternoon. Should I go see "Margot at the Wedding" instead? Not sure if I'm in the mood for an uncomfortable movie, but I liked "The Squid and the Whale" a lot, so maybe I should? Alternative is sitting in a coffeeshop and reading for like three hours at least. Need to occupy myself in Evanston between 3ish and 6:45.
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)
what other movies are playing?
― Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)
Why do you have free time in Evanston for that long?
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)
*psst dude Margot at the wedding is GREAT*
― Mr. Que, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)
man, i stayed up waaaay too late working on that mojito remix. it's pretty much done, i just have to mix it.
also, i bought that turntable from a jazz saxophonist/philosophy major and rediscovered some records. who knew that my dad had the best of Steely Dan on vinyl!
― Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)
Nick?
Nickie?
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)
Read the thread.
― dan m, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)
My work party is in Evanston tonight and I don't want to drive home and then drive back out to Evanston later so I'm just hanging out here all day.
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)
yeah maybe i'll just check out margot at the wedding
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
Dan? Danny?
Shhhh.
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)
nick, we're going to see "i'm not there" at 4:30 in evanston, if you want to come along? i don't know how long it is, but if it's short enough you're welcome to.
you can also come to my office and steal a crispy oatmeal cookie or two (they're supposed to be that way, they're not just burned). i brought a whole bag for the movies, inspired by the baking done by you and sarah.
i liked "margot at the wedding" but i probably wouldn't go see it just before enforced social activities with work people...it kind of made me hate people, you know?
― colette, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)
dang, "i'm not there" is what i really want to see but assuming it's 2 hrs long and there will be previews too, it's cutting it pretty close for me to get to the shindig on time
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
Fuck the holidays. I hate having divorced parents. If I get one more e-mail or phone call from one of my parents about how I'm not spending a fair amount of time with them over the other, I'm going to say 'fuck it' and not go see them at all. It's not a fucking competition.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
I'm Not There is 2:15.
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)
I mean 2 hr 15 min.
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
:(
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
j/v/c, can't you just not see them? i know it's easier said than done, but we didn't want to get into a pattern of having to alternate parents and years, so just said we're on our own this christmas. my mom was surprisingly accepting of this, although now we've agreed to come over for a couple days the weekend before, and it's basically christmas, just early...
dang, that movie is long! i'm not good with movies over 2 hours, glad i brought cookies and edamame to keep me from getting hungry!
― colette, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)
Nick, go window shopping!
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
Well, we decided a couple years ago to alternate years. Last year we spend with my parents, so this year we are going to Michigan to spend it with my fiance's parents. Which has worked out well. But this year my mom moved her Christmas plans to this weekend so that we could be there. Fine, but it pissed off my dad. So now he wants a holiday party this weekend and we shifted things around to do both. And now my mom is feeling shorted. Yeah, it would definitely be easier to not go at all, but I've already promised to see them both this weekend.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
n/a - go to Dr. Wax and Vintage Vinyl! I haven't been to Vintage yet, curious to check it out.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
I've never been to VV, but I remember Amateurist telling stories about that place, something about their mark-up being really high.
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah? I always forget its there, but now that I live in Evanston I should go check it out.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)
I think I wandered into VV for a few minutes when killing time before last year's office party!
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)
I guess 2 hr 15 min is kind of long -- the only other movies out that are longer are American Gangster (2:37) and Into the Wild (2:30) -- but most dramas are about 2 hours long (Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, Rendition, Atonement, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, and The Mist are all between 2:00 and 2:05), so an extra 15 minutes doesn't seem like that much more to me. But of course some movies just feel longer than others, too.
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)
i thought both michael clayton and no country for old men felt too long to me. but i have a short attention span.
― colette, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
All this movie talk reminds me that I need to go see a bunch over the next couple months.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)
Colette, those sound yum! I'm planning on making these crazy oatmeal cookies sometime this weekend. :-D
― KitCat, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
those sound awesome. i had to go double-check to make sure there were no raisins--YUP! awesome.
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)
I got that tattoo. I wound up getting one pretty much like the Picasso that Jordan posted but sans Sancho Panza (and Shakespeare).
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)
? - i thought you had to wait until april for your tattoo? or is that another tattoo?
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)
can't you just not see them? i know it's easier said than done we've found it quite easy! no one expects much from us anyway ("weird, childless couple who lives in a city") so we have taken not one but two years off of Christmas. my parents are coming to visit in january, though, so that kinda makes up for it. i dunno. either way all you have to do is do it and steel yourself for a little (jealous) griping from various factions.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)
also i have no siblings and my parents are highly unsentimental
hey everybody, just wondering if there is an afterwork bar thing like last week going on tonight?
― stingy, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)
where did you get it, jesse?
― Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)
I got it on my upper right arm, and I got it at Head 2 Toe tattoos, leather shop, and cell phone slumatorium.
― Jesse, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)
Jon, my parents are also divorced and I want to see the in-laws too... so last year and this year I'm getting them all together. Since there is no 'home base' for my family (Mom can't stay at Dad's and vice versa), I'm just making my family go wherever Nick's family is. Basically, I win.
OTOH, it's unfortunate that my Mom and Dad never get quality time with all three kids at once without having their ex around. It's hard for my youngest sis to get to the States, so when she does, we all have to be together.
― KitCat, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)
Nick is really pushing for a non-family Christmas next year, but I don't know if I could do it. We tried that in '04 and, while fun, I missed my family something awful.
― KitCat, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
you can have a family christmas if you want. i'll just sit at home by myself
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)
it's nice not having to worry about xmas :>
― Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)
so yesterday pfork ran its list of the year's best videos and this bat for lashes video is blowing my mind ... looks to be all one take?
― n/a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
I did my holidays in california last week so i will be free to hit the titty bars with the jews on xmas eve.
― Eazy, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)
I can't imagine not going home to my family -- we sort of have this extended family tradition of marrying people whose own families are small, distant, or dysfunctional, thereby freeing all the Smith/Girvan/Vosses to get together on the preferred family side. It's rad. Future spouses of Girvans take note.
― Laurel, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
OMG. This is ridiculous. My mom is now sending me very, very passive-aggressive e-mails about how hurt she is that her and my stepdad are only getting "leftovers" of the weekend.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
i loooove one-take music videos
― Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)
Give her the right wing response: If you want a family christmas, don't get divorced.
― dan m, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
Hahahahhaahaha. Thats awesome.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)
that video is fucking fantastic. when the freaky bunny bikers first appear! i like the song too.
― Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)
Fogerty's "the old man down the road" is a good one-take video. lisa loeb's "stay" is redeemed by it being one take.
