auspicious day- second ever trail run (but first in 10 years), longest run (8 mi.), first attempt at serious hills (sections of 18-20%). gonna ice my knee as precaution. we'll see what the morning brings after that last long steep descent.

That looks beautiful from the satellite photos!

Ilxor: if you read this - GOOD LUCK IN THE MARATHON!

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Oh hey thanks! We're running tomorrow morning, just kicking around today and trying to stay off our feet in San Francisco. There's lots to see, nice weather, walked around a bunch at the Expo a bit earlier. We'll be up at 5:30am. Woo boy...

i thought this was kinda interesting. i ran easy warm up, then alternated 800 easy/800 at 3:45. each time, my recovery pace slowed a further 30sec/mile. not intentional, just showing that each subsequent hard effort seemed to be going deeper and deeper into my recovery ability.

ilxor, how was SFM?

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Thursday, 29 July 2010 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

Really fun race. I generally stick to trail races, because I can feel 26.2 miles of pavement on my legs in a repetitive, over-usage sort of way. And this race was no different. I stuck with my wife (her first marathon) and we finished around 5:10. I still had gas left in the tank, so the only question now is what comes next for my running. (Answer: 30k trail race in 16 days.)

Ilxor, I hope you edged out your wife at the finish line though.

Jeff, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

Nope, I actually dropped back a bit in the finish chute and let her edge me out by exactly one second. That was the best second I could have given away. I get to sleep in my own bed this week! ;-)

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

Congratulations on your successful marathon, ilxor!

Got a heart rate monitor last week and have been playing with it... fun to wear it to bed and try and guess REM sleep by heart rate. I think I'm going to wear it to work and see if angry customers cause a spike. But I was surprised at how high my bpm is while running!

longer trail run, starts with 1500ft of climbing at 5-12% climbing. pretty hot day, but trails have a bit of tree cover in places. so cool to be running in the hills near town, but really ran into very few people. maybe folks went to the mountains, idk. anyway had one memorable long traverse/descent with killer views of town and glades of flowers and groves of pines w/ ferns-- and no people.

the very loose, babyhead-filled singletrack descent was the hardest/scariest thing ive done to my legs since i bet someone i could tele drunken frenchmen in one take. (i didnt even come close to making frenchman, but i did run the whole way down today).

wondering if i'll be able to walk well tomorrow.

Massive half Mary fail today. At least I finished!

Jeff, Sunday, 1 August 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

finishing is all you need to justify some big drinks imo, good work!

ogmor, Sunday, 1 August 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah jeff, thats hardcore. did your knee break down, or were you just not ready yet?

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Sunday, 1 August 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah waht up Jeff?

yeah not up with the concept of 'fail' and 'finished' together tbh.

signed up for nother 1/2 mara in sep, and a few 5/10 miles in btwn to keep me honest. have't been doing much since tbh

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Monday, 2 August 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

I beat Al Roker. That's all you need to know. If I had I would have just put rocks in my pocket and walked into Lake Michigan.

Jeff, Monday, 2 August 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

If I had NOT.

Jeff, Monday, 2 August 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

i've been running 5k every other day (on average) for the last three months after not running with any regularity whatsoever since cross country in high school, ten years ago. i love it, and i'm kind of shocked at how easy it was to get back into it (though i couldn't have ever said i was actually "into it" back then). next week i'm flying to san francisco for my sister's wedding, and on the morning of, we've both got plans to run with my uncle, who back in '96 got a little write-up in sports illustrated for being the first person to run 50 marathons in 50 states before age 50. somewhat of an extended family celebrity, he still runs marathons constantly, in fact he flew out to run with my sister for her first marathon last year. so i'm pretty stoked about this opportunity to run with greatness! hopefully it won't be hot as ass.

del griffith, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

so im taking suggestions on the delicate subject of chafed nipple avoidance. after 1500ft of vertical and 3 miles of running my singlet was soaked and chafing me. i felt i had no option but to run shirtless or suffer some dire shit. it was 90 deg+ and ppl were scarce so it wasnt too bad, but what do you do to avoid this? carry a dry shirt? does body glide work for this?

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

Duct tape.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

That, or you can buy these (*cough* overpriced...) protectors:

plasters

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

Advanced liquid technology protects against chaffing and abrasions

hmm. that's ok, i'll just bleed over here. :)

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

Hey Jeff, well done! From your previous posts it looked like you had a tough day ahead of you.

Re nipple chafage: I've only had this when wearing cotton t-shirts, it never happens to me with "technical" fibres or whatever they're called.

seandalai, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

hunter sorry if this is too obvious to even mention but what is your top made of? because if it's, like, cotton, change that shit

thomp, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

... xpost

thomp, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

excellent point actually. i only wear tech gear on top, and in this case i was actually wearing a superlight brooks running singlet. i think the fact that it was completely soaked and sticking to me contributed-

oh good god. O_O

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

I use body glide + tech shirt, and it works well, at least with distances up to about seven miles or so. It's more of a problem in winter for me than summer.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Water proof bandaids. I get the chaffing no matter what I wear and on any distance over 3 miles.

Jeff, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

bad news: i haven't been running much because i can no longer stand the hot weather
good news: the academic year has officially begun and i can feel the stress beginning to mount, which makes me want to run like a bandit.

i have never experienced chafing so i don't really know what to say about that.

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

It's more of a problem in winter for me than summer.

Trust me, the 100+ degree Texas heat is no kinder and/or more manageable.

u guys should wear sports bras like us

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

that's not really very funny to those of us still trying to shift the man-boobage tbh :(

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

ha, not really sure which would be less dignified, a bro or nipshields. otoh, by fitness fascist standards i have a little natural gyno even at 10% body fat, so other than plastic surgery, i just have to deal.

a bro = a male bra?

I run at Town Lake! I don't know why it's only a problem for me in winter. Dry skin, I guess.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 6 August 2010 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

hardest run ive ever done, i think- 12 miles, 3000 ft of climbing at about 10%. beautiful views, but really hard to appreciate. took forever. preparing to ice hell out of knees.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Sunday, 8 August 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

i can't believe you max out at 160bpm running grades like that. i hit 190 running over bridges!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

i tried hard to keep it under control. no walking, but obv- it was only a notch above powerhiking in some places.

max hr's are weird. when im fairly conditioned, 165 or so is it. i did 400m sprint repeats the other day and i couldnt get over 162 iirc. when im out of shape though? i can probly hit 175.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Sunday, 8 August 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

I hit 200 when I'm sprinting! Running at an easy pace, like slow enough to chat with somebody while I run, I end up around 175bpm. I'll be interested to see if it drops a bit when the temperature goes down below 90.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 9 August 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

did 5mi yesterday then swam across a lake, pretty fn sweet
