colette, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

three and a half stars? WHY BOTHER?

rooftop bar!

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

colette, how long have you been looking? and what are you looking for, again?

sisut, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Colette it took me three (3) months to find a full-time job, and that was a pretty shitty full-time job.

n/a, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Colette, email me at naamme @ yahoo dot com. I don't think I have your email.

n/a, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Hey just in case people are still looking for bikes, I saw this place written up in Chicago Weekly, sounds like a great shop:

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Actually that whole issue was pretty great. They cataloged the "best of the south side". That record store in Beverly made it, along with Salonica and a bunch of other places that have been mentioned on Chi threads gone by.

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Never mind colette, I found your email, Sarah had sent it to me a while back.

n/a, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

i guess i first started seriously looking the beginning of august. i'm not even getting calls back from temp agencies (i'm registered with new 0ffice but in that time have had 6 days of work). i know it's a slow process, but man it's depressing!

sisut, i have a masters degree in nonprofit management. i've been applying for communications posts and events planning and some grantwriting. plus general admin assistant roles, working in shops, etc. bleh.

colette, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

2x what n/a said...it took me about 3 months of looking. I'm in non-profit fundraising/development so let me know where you've been looking and I'll keep an eye out, too. I know Teen Living Programs was looking for a grantwriter a while back, but I think they've filled it. Go ahead and email me at katie @ lacasanorte dot org

From the AV Club interview with Uwe Boll: "...Dave foley really went for it. He event went for a full-frontal nudity scene, which was surprising for me also. I was sitting behind my video desk and couldn't believe it! He did it without telling me. He was supposed to get up from his bed and close his bathrobe, but he didn't close it. We were all sitting there laughing our ass off. He played it super-cool. It's those kinds of offensive scenes that make Postal special, because it's harsher than what we're used to from even the Farrelly brothers' comedies. It's like one step more than even Borat. Postal is like Borat without the black bars."

Dilbert is unusually emo today:

Remember when I was talking about how the word "breaststroke" had give straight consonants? Well, so does "postscript." I wonder if there are any others.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember that "bookkeeper" is the only word with three straight sets of double letters. Is that right?

n/a, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, the rest of that Uwe Boll interview is gold.

Jordan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

I think so, Nick.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

This city assessor is visiting our building and just gave me his card. He has J0hn's name!

KitCat, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Don't you know that English is the only language that counts, Katie?

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

The Internet has ruined everything:

Consonant Strings

Some common words with an uninterrupted string of five consonants are BACKSPLASH, BACKSTRETCH, BACKSTROKE, BIRTHPLACE, BREASTSTROKE, DOWNSTREAM, DOWNTHRUST, DUMBSTRUCK, EIGHTHS, ERSTWHILE, HEARTTHROB, LENGTHS, LIGHTPROOF, MATCHSTICK, NIGHTCLOTHES, NIGHTCLUB, NIGHTDRESS, POSTSCRIPT, STRENGTHS, THOUSANDTHS, THUMBSCREW, TWELFTHS, WARMTHS, and WITCHCRAFT. ANGSTS is the shortest word with five consonants in a row.

These words have six consecutive consonants: ARCHCHRONICLER, CATCHPHRASE, ESCHSCHOLTZIA, HANTZSCHIA, KNIGHTSBRIDGE, LATCHSTRING, POSTPHTHISIC, and WELTSCHMERZ. A popular staple food in Ukraine is a beetroot soup called borsch, which occurs in English dictionaries with a variety of spellings including borshch and borscht, giving rise to plurals containing a string of six consonants: BORSHCHS and BORSCHTS.

HIRSCHSPRUNG'S (DISEASE) has seven consecutive consonants, as does SCHTSCHUROWSKIA. The shortest such word is TSKTSKS. All of these words can be found in major English dictionaries.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

"Archchronicler" sounds like a really lame comic book villan.

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I know I already posted too much stuff from damninteresting, but this is Chicago/WGN-related. Make sure to watch the linked YouTube clips: http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=776#more-776

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yup yup.

KitCat, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

La Lechera, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I had a terrifying dream last night that featured the word "pherabim", haunted forests, possessed children and ancient African curses. It was really disturbing.

La Lechera, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

It just so happens I'm researching horror movies to rent tonight.

KitCat, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Like?

Jordan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

My dream made me want to watch Val Lewton movies.

aka BLACK SABBATH. I hope this is on your list. (Unless you've already seen it.)

La Lechera, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

omg Race with the Devil is RIDIC! I loved it! Best part takes place in a "mobile home park." Lots of gratuitious motorbiking too.

La Lechera, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

BEEEEERR IN JUST OVER 2 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you drinking with us?

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

I prob. can't get there until 6:30, as usual.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Also, argh, I am trying to transliterate Persian. I don't know why I bother, except I want to know why the spelling "Hossein" (instead of "Hussein") is more common in Iran than elsewhere.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Probably along the same reasons as you see "hummus" "hommos" "hommous" etc.

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Amanda, I can't find that on IMDB!

KitCat, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

It would not be a bad idea to have a Barbara Steele film fest.

La Lechera, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

It's sometimes called Mask of Satan or Black Sunday or any number of things -- look up Mario Bava and you'll find it.

La Lechera, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, this is probably it.
