Jeff, I'm rooting for you and yr itb btw. My wife has similar issues and it was incredibly frustrating for her.

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

took 9 days off from running (id only been doing it for 4 weeks or so), and returned to it tonight for a short 3.5 mi. wow, i felt great. my legs/knees didn't hurt, i felt refreshed. after my alpine century ride on Sunday, i'll be running focused until imogene in Sept.

btw, school of seven bells' new album is dead perfect for running on the track

Woke up at 5 am to get an 8 miler in today. Exhausted. Whole body ache after that one, but no specific ITB pain.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 July 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

up at 5:30 to do 4 mi. Supposed to be 100 deg today, but nice and cool this morning.

I've been encompassed by aches and pains. I'm keeping the ITB in check, but my abs and groin have been bothering me the most. This is from playing tennis a MONTH ago. But it's the one thing that's holding me up from really kicking it out there. Talked to the doc today, he said I could either rest for several weeks, or keep running and just let it heal slower. I chose the latter.

Half marathon on 8/1. Should be interesting.

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

started up running again, did 1 mile today. felt okay afterwards. hope to go up to 2 miles by next week.

$12 running shoes from wal-mart are really heavy, hah.

dyao, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

jeff, sorry to hear about this stuff. i wont give you any advice other than "focus on your total wellness."

ha got through the century w/ no lasting damage, back to running tonight!

So sad that this is becoming the thread of injury and woe. I'm not running again either, calf went pop once more last week, so another two weeks off for me. Gah!

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

Not injured, but can recommend not trying to run 4 miles at 9pm without eating anything all day. Ran out of gas after 1.5 miles.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 06:58 (fifteen years ago)

first exercise of any type since the half mara 3 weeks ago was 90 mins of football on monday. hurt but enjoyed it and came through only a little stiff. think i'll try for 7-8 miles over the weekend, but I may be cycling this instead.

I have totally welched on all running :-( Too hot and humid for me (Tehresa, I am in awe of your continuing to run around here). I was supposed to run an 8K and pulled out, even though it was at 8.45pm. Volunteered as a course marshal instead, which was fun. An ancient cat came out to help me by sitting next to my traffic cones.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 11:49 (fifteen years ago)

running in the rain is much more tolerable than riding a bike in the rain, keeps you cool. having glasses in the rain, however, always sucks.

i went hiking in TN for a week, so i didn't run at all because i was hiking all the time
now i'm back and feeling unmotivated because it's so HOT, but i did run a teensy bit yesterday and will resume regular sched tomorrow. not feeling injured, just too hot.

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 11:55 (fifteen years ago)

5 miles this morning. Really nice out, albeit very humid.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

havent been running that much, too hot

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

the hottest 10 mi i ever ran were the 5 mi i ran in tn in august for real

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

I have started running again specifically because of the heat

I sorta love running in the heat

iatee, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I kind of like the feeling of ~true sweatiness~ cause it makes you feel like you really worked hard even if you just ran for a mile or two or whatever. it's hard to push yourself in the heat tho

dyao, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah in general i loathe running in the heat but when i actually get off my ass to do it i feel like a champion health star when i'm done

be told and get high on coconut (gbx), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

sweat in the eyes is the worst

cozen, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

Just run with your eyes closed.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

i've been doing it sometimes. it sucks. especially running next to a (small) river you can't jump into. my glasses also slide down my face.

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

oh i couldn't run with glasses on. contacts or anything, but no way with glasses.

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

honestly don't understand how ppl don't just wear sunglasses all the time. i am turning into that type of guy now

be told and get high on coconut (gbx), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, me too : /

the sweat runs down under them tho, I'm not 80s enough to carry off a headband

cozen, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

that said i'm considering getting a pair of wraparound goggles kind of thing that i saw a guy with at football the last day.

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

oh just do it anyway

i have (and have lost) this Merlin cycles headband that is really just str8 ugly but it was great for running last summer

http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.com/images/bikes-and-gear/accessories/eyewear/sunglasses/CYP211.shades.tifvent_prev-399-75.jpg

basically do not leave the house w/o these on

really really need some non-cycling-douche sunglasses, but these are dope for running/cycling

be told and get high on coconut (gbx), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

it's hard to push yourself in the heat tho

yeah it feels a bit like running through treacle sometimes. humidity much worse than just plain heat though.

i have to wear sunglasses whenever i run, whatever the weather, they genuinely help me focus.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

I just wear a hat and wipe my eyes on my sleeve.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

my knee keeps hurting after i run and i am not sure if i can do much about it

thomp, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

a simple cho pat style single strap definitely helped me when my knee cap became really inflamed during my last infatuation with running.

I live in Texas, so I have to like running in the heat because if I didn't, I would only be able to run five months out of the year. Really, your body adjusts to it after two or three weeks. I wouldn't try running in the middle of the day though... only before or after sunset. I love love love running at night.

Echoing all of this ^^^

I'm in California right now, it's a few days to go until the San Francisco Marathon. Great weather, really different from Austin TX though.

oops, make that "before sunrise or after sunset."

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 22 July 2010 05:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm moving to a new apartment today and one of my movers is wearing Vibrams......

Jeff, Friday, 23 July 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

I had a waitress in a small Texas bistro wearing Vibrams a week or two ago.

keep plotting out 7 mile runs on mmr but can't get a route I'm happy with

7 miles is a long way ;_;

dill hai to mango aur (cozen), Friday, 23 July 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

I was right; 7 miles is a long way

7 miles: done. I was dying to get sub-60 minutes, especially when I realised about halfway through I'd set off too slow. final time was 59:24. last 400 metres were hellish. uphill into a headwind. :_(

dill hai to mango aur (cozen), Friday, 23 July 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

auspicious day- second ever trail run (but first in 10 years), longest run (8 mi.), first attempt at serious hills (sections of 18-20%). gonna ice my knee as precaution. we'll see what the morning brings after that last long steep descent.

That looks beautiful from the satellite photos!

Ilxor: if you read this - GOOD LUCK IN THE MARATHON!

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Oh hey thanks! We're running tomorrow morning, just kicking around today and trying to stay off our feet in San Francisco. There's lots to see, nice weather, walked around a bunch at the Expo a bit earlier. We'll be up at 5:30am. Woo boy...

i thought this was kinda interesting. i ran easy warm up, then alternated 800 easy/800 at 3:45. each time, my recovery pace slowed a further 30sec/mile. not intentional, just showing that each subsequent hard effort seemed to be going deeper and deeper into my recovery ability.

ilxor, how was SFM?

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Thursday, 29 July 2010 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

Really fun race. I generally stick to trail races, because I can feel 26.2 miles of pavement on my legs in a repetitive, over-usage sort of way. And this race was no different. I stuck with my wife (her first marathon) and we finished around 5:10. I still had gas left in the tank, so the only question now is what comes next for my running. (Answer: 30k trail race in 16 days.)
