I wish I could remember the name of the whole-in-the-wall Indian place we ate it as it was seriously the best Indian food I've ever eaten in the US. Also it was ridiculously cheap; I think the entrees were something like $4 each.

Here's the place we went! It was AWESOME. I have no idea how close it is to your hotel, though.

Ozoke is okay. Go the other direction (west) towards Japantown, specifically Ino upstairs at the Miyako Mall.
Indian/Pakistanian food is all over the tenderloin (the tandoorloin). Shalimar's really good.
Your hotel's neighborhood is VAN NESS/BROADWAY. It's in between Russian Hill/NobHill/Tenderloin/Pacific Heights.
There's a great restaurant near there called Street. Nick's Crispy Tacos is Jax0n's favorite eatery around there. Harris' Steakhouse if you feel like meat.

xpost Ino? I will remember that one, you are the best with sushi recs. I really didn't even consider the sunday + sushi being hmmmy proposition angle though. I'm having a long day.
I'm going to bookmark this thread and try to remember some of the names of recommended spots so while I'm walking around if I spot one I can try it out.

Broadway & Van Ness is kind of tough. I seem to remember a good Vietnamese place on Polk around there (oh I just checked Dan's link--it's called Lemon Grass) and you are a short-ish walk to Hyde St and there are a bunch of nice-ish bistros (1550 Hyde is supposed to be good and I like the tapas at Zarzuela) around there. If you want expensive beef the House of Prime Rib is well uh excessive.

I was kinda underwhelmed by this place but it wasn't bad or anything. There is also another underwhelming thai or vietnamese (can't remember) place across the street from it.

For another amazing meal, try 1550 Hyde, which is walking distance from where you are staying.
― schwantz (schwantz), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:45 (eighteen years ago) link
at night the place is a club. during the day you can actually see that all the walls are painted red and there's weird ass shit hanging from the ceiling. it's wicked creepy.

Antica Trattoria at Polk and Union is the best Northern Italian restaurant in SF.
Pascal Rigo has one of his Boulanges on Polk a block away and Le Petit Robert, a decent and fairly cheap French bistro style place. On Van Ness between Green (or is it Vallejo?) and Union is
YaYa2424 Van Ness AveSan Francisco, CA 94109-1826 (415) 440-0455
Yayha Salih's amazing Iraqi restaurant.

The Vietnamese sandwiches at Saigon Sandwich in the Tenderloin were super good, and cheap. Not as good as the ones I've had in Seattle, but better than the one I had in Chicago last weekend. The place was a tiny little hole-in-the-wall.
I think the most enjoyable meal I had in SF was at a tiny little Italian place called L'Osteria Del Forno, at 519 Columbus Ave. in North Beach. That's like a mile from Broadway & Van Ness. I honestly liked my lunch at this place much better than the lunch I had at Chez Panisse Cafe in Berkeley the day before.
