Euler, is there no AC in Parisian train cars? Our (Chicago) trains and buses are air conditioned. I've happened upon a train cars with broken AC and the ride was unbearable. I can't imagine that being the norm.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

afaik there is no AC in Paris metros; in the RER a few trains have it but I've noticed lately those trains have been few & far between. I've been on 6 trains in Paris so far today & none had AC, though it's fine today; about 26C right now. But at 35C it was really awful, esp. on the RER A which is Europe's busiest line & (yay) part of my typical commute; typical trip looks like this:

Ugh, in Paris on Monday, hotel had no AC.

The subte in Buenos Aires doesn't have A/C, and in the summer it is brutal, especially during rush hour.

Kind of suprised I didnt post to this thread during that freak heatwave we had where we had 2 days of 45+ degrees and then a 48C (118F) day, and then half of victoria got flattened by fires.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

I ran a shit ton of errands yesterday when it was 90F/32C and wouldn't you know, managed to catch a train with broken AC. Brutal.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

Don't risk it. Stay inside where it's safe.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

stayed inside all day. haven't put clothes on at all.
should go out and get some w33d and stop by the store to get my paycheck and then go to the bank, but I can't imagine mustering the energy.

Tourists stood outside today, in 104 degree weather, in a line that was a block long.
Just to take a picture of a guy that makes cakes.
Tourists really are fascinating creatures.

being awake is really unpleasant at this temp but it is impossible to sleep how about that

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

we camped for 4th of July weekend, so like good responsible grownups we turned the AC off while we were gone. Not that I would do anything differently, but UGH last night was awful, I think the house has only just started to cool down now. Combination of ac/whole-house-fan/ceiling fans and we were sitting around sweating like pigs. These old un-insulated houses, goddamm do they suck up the heat. Crikey.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

i'm afraid my window unit is gonna die while i sleep, leaving me to blanch in my own sweat until waking up... only to enter a conscious heat nightmare

East coast USA weather made the national news this morning. :( It sounds miserable out there!

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

Lake Shore Drive was closed for 8 hours the other day because the road was "buckling." That's the downside of a climate that follows several months of freeze with several months of extreme heat.

How humid is it out east? Yesterday in Chicago it was only 90 or so, but so humid it felt like wet death. So I went to the pool, which is what you do when it's really hot (hint to NYC).

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 12:17 (fifteen years ago)

Miserable. We have AC in bedroom and thankfully I work in a big cool office. But the time between leaving the bedroom in the AM and actually getting to work, is a time that my brain just shuts down and blocks out everything so I can go somewhere else in my mind.

great day to have a summer cold and to go to the dentist!

dan selzer, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

so humid it felt like wet death.

Today, too. I know we'd be in for it when the news anchor on NPR kept repeating the word "steamy." Especially since she is the one who describes days in the high 80s as "delightful." Everything about me is limp, except for my hair, which grew three sizes this day.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

the humidity is rolling in. : (

Hot, muggy and overcast in London today - and the kind of weather where gnats hitchhike places in your hair. GAAAAAH.

THIS BOOK EQUAL CONJOB (suzy), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the heat puts me right off the idea of any food other than sorbet and margaritas. If I had no AC I'd probably lose 15 lbs; unfortunately, artificially cooled air allows me to eat normal human food with a near-normal appetite.

the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

I've never entirely believed that crap about dry heat, but for a couple of days last week it could say 82 degrees on my air cond thermostat and it was still reasonably comfy if lightly dressed (without running AC). Lately, though, it says 82 or 83 and I feel like dying.

the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

spend large parts of the year in a high humidity place where 75 degrees @ 100% humidity feels completely awful and 100 degree w/ 30% humidity (yesterday) will feel like a gift sent from God

like a ◴ ◷ ◶ (dyao), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

Humidity of 95% for London at 7am tomorrow, falling to 92% by 10am. Enjoy your Tube rides everyone, I'm walking.
