Hunt3r- maybe you just started off too quickly? Was very prone to that in the first couple of months, especially after a good run the previous go.

How much longer until your half darraghmac?
― Adge Cutler & the Özils (NickB), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:16 (sixteen years ago)
oh, ages
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:18 (sixteen years ago)
plenty of time, yet
(it's this weekend)
Oh um, that's quite soon! Praying for you man.
― Adge Cutler & the Özils (NickB), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:22 (sixteen years ago)
Ah looking forward to it, really. I'll be taking it at my own pace and all that jazz. Raised double the target amount so I kinda have to give it a good lash at this stage regardless.
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:26 (sixteen years ago)
Probably said this before, but my top tip is to find someone to chat to while you're going along, it's amazing how the miles can just pass by that way. Good luck and godspeed though.
― Adge Cutler & the Özils (NickB), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:42 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i got a guy sorted out, and it made a huge diffeence in my halfway-stage 10k so here's hoping.
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:46 (sixteen years ago)
Also, kick them in the shins and start sprinting like a loon with 200m to go.
― Adge Cutler & the Özils (NickB), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:49 (sixteen years ago)
yeah totally planning to wreak maximum physical carnage in the initial groupings
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:49 (sixteen years ago)
good luck!
carl (dog) and i have been enjoying some 65-70 degree weather and sunshine. am increasing my stretching and watching out for injury, as i think i was pushing it for a while there.

Played tennis for the first time in 9 months last night. I think I pulled every single muscle in my midsection. Feels great to have am injury that isn't directly running related.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:54 (sixteen years ago)
a change is as good as a rest
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:56 (sixteen years ago)
Ran 3 last night, 7 this morning. Legs have that oh-so-satisfying soreness here at work. YESSSSSSSSSSSS
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:51 (sixteen years ago)
No matter how much I stretch my calves always shut me down. They start KILLING me and I have to quit. How to stop this?
― Salted gnocchimole (admrl), Friday, 2 July 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)
I like "the stick" for calves. No idea of it would help you out your issue.
2.88 yesterday. Was absolutely perfect until right at the end when my right knee buckled and I almost fell over. Amazing how fast this comes on. And how I'm totally pain free most days afterwards. It's a cruel, cruel tease. Only 99 days to marathon.
― Jeff, Friday, 2 July 2010 19:01 (sixteen years ago)
Seconding "The Stick" -- that shit is amazing on sore legs.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 2 July 2010 20:12 (sixteen years ago)
Made 3 miles today!
― Jeff, Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)
a week long vacation with no bikes in sight. so its run run run. done 4, 5, and 4 milers so far, running quite a bit along the erie canal. no sign of mule named sal.
starting to be able to enjoy this shit. a little knee tweaking, a little hotspot action on the feet, but so far no breakdowns.
― Enter nothing in the dialog and click 'OK' (Hunt3r), Saturday, 3 July 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)
Sounds good!
― seandalai, Saturday, 3 July 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
how are your neighbors and pals along the erie canal ;)
it has been too hot for me to run during the day, and have been sleeping in til 7:30 or 8 so maybe tomorrow?

This is before or after?
― seandalai, Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
aftermath.
disappointed with the run itself, having to stop twice to walk during miles 9 and 11 (also tweaking hamstring didn't help) but still came in 15 seconds ahead of my minimum time (laughable 2 hrs 40 mins but hey we all gotta start somewhere, right?
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Sunday, 4 July 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
Hey, first time is a massive achievement no matter how fast/slow you go (and you get a PB by default). You'll have lots more chances to work on improving your time.
― seandalai, Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)
Awesome, congratulations.
― Jeff, Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
how do you run in summer heat & humidity? early mornings only I imagine.
― kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
I actually like running in the heat on occasion. Still I mostly do evenings, which it is still hot as hell but getting cooler. Saturday mornings I try to get out between 7:30 and 8:30 am.
― Jeff, Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)
Darraghmac, big flipping CONGRATS boy! W00t!
― Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Sunday, 4 July 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)
Also, I'm going to light a candle in memory of your legs. RIP.
good running sir
― ogmor, Sunday, 4 July 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
Heh, great picture. I know that feeling. Congratulations!
You acclimate after a couple weeks, although when it's really hot you do need to drink more. I always run around sunset, and in the summer here (Texas) that means it's usually somewhere between 90-100F and generally humid. As long as the sun isn't shining on me, it's not a big deal.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 4 July 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)
It never gets *really* hot here in the UK but my heat tolerance is pretty low so I've been miserable for the past two weeks of 25+ degrees all day. So it's eleven at night now and I'm about to head off for my run...
― seandalai, Sunday, 4 July 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)
man well done
― plax (ico), Sunday, 4 July 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)
btw Darragh no matter how bad you feel tomorrow and the day after you will recover and your body will be stronger for the race. Exercise is like magic that way.
(injuries aside)
― seandalai, Sunday, 4 July 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)
thanks everyone! not feeling too bad, except for stairs. have already accepted offer of another 1/2 mara in sep, this time without 3 brutal hills to deal with
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Sunday, 4 July 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)
When will you ever bloody learn man?
― Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Monday, 5 July 2010 07:50 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i learned about hills for a start
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 July 2010 08:59 (fifteen years ago)
Elevation Gain: 822 ft Elevation Loss: 825 ft Min Elevation: 26 ft Max Elevation: 322 ft
Do these stats mean anything to anyone> The hills were absolute dynamite to cramping calves tbh.
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 July 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)
Seems too hilly for me. Hell, even a 5% grade kills me.
― Jeff, Monday, 5 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)
3 more pain free miles today. Still my fitness is lacking. That's fine though, it will come back eventually.
― Jeff, Monday, 5 July 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)
I love hills. That looks like a great race!
Ran 20 yesterday. Three weeks 'til my fourth marathon, and my wife's first.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Monday, 5 July 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)
So I was talking to my little sister yesterday and she was trying to talk me into doing the Ridgeway 85 mile race with her. In eight weeks time. And I haven't done any serious rnning since I got injured in March. And when I have been for a jog, it's like I'm trying to run with a wooden leg - my calf and hamstring just feel numb and dead. And given that this year has just been a miserable failure for me as far as running achievements go, I'm actually sort of curious about entering anyway, just to see what happens. Will I die?
― Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Monday, 5 July 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
PS I did some training today, just in case! 2.9 miles to work, 4.2 miles home! Woohoo!
― Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Monday, 5 July 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)
it will be a beautiful death
― ogmor, Monday, 5 July 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
a death a man would be glad to wish for in his quiet moments before sleep
― ,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 July 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
That 85 miler sounds incredible (I've read a bit about it before). Take the pace easy!
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)
Will probably end up doing it on a bike tbh, my sister really just wants some help with the night time navigation. And some company too - goes through lots of spooky places Uffington Castle, Wayland's Smithy, Didcot...
― Cooper Temple Paws (NickB), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)
Four miles this morning. No itb pain. Am I back? Starting to feel like it. 25 days until my half marathon and I feel like I'll be able to run/walk it. I hope.
