apparently having a bumper stops this from happening?

knocking u out like rocky balboa (sunny successor), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

It does!

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, tried one today and it definitely happens, and goes away when you insulate the aerial. They should give away the bumpers, or this will turn into a massive whingefest by Monday.

iPhone 4 waiting or me when I got home, this screen is fucking awesome, shame I'm still waiting for my activation to go through. Playing with it on wifi.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

Couldn't do the line today. Several thousand people in it, upwards of a five hour wait, even for reserved. I'll have to wait a few weeks.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

These lines are totally about publicity, aren't they? Absolutely nothing to stop them being better organized.

stet, Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

Yup, free column inches will be massive tomorrow. To be fair though it doesn't so apple any favours to build too much stock in advance, inventory costs money to hold.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, but they could at least have organised it better for the pre-orders, with collection slots or similar. Having people waiting five hours when they'd reserved in advance is a bit much.

stet, Friday, 25 June 2010 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

MacRumors forum user samcraig emailed Steve Jobs about the low signal issue while holding the new iPhone 4 in a specific way. The potential issue has been generating a lot of discussion. Samcraig emailed Steve Jobs:
Question - What's going to be done about the signal dropping issue. Is it software or hardware?

To which, Jobs replied with a typically short response:
Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way.

In a followup email, Jobs then expanded with this explanation:
Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

Steve Jobs has been known to respond to emails and we were able to log into Samcraig's email account to verify the authenticity of the emails, so we believe these are real.

lol steve jobs

I should post this here, too. Dan Harmon from "Community" spent like all yesterday playing with his new iphone and posting the results to twitter:

making people queue when they were organised enough to order in advance is moronic

xposts

I tried to make the signal loss issue happen but couldn't, I get pretty good signal in my flat, I guess I'll have to learn how to hold my phone before I go to new york next.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 25 June 2010 01:05 (sixteen years ago)

First email is definitely Jobs; second email is PR and Legal

stet, Friday, 25 June 2010 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

So I had a phone reserved for me this morning and it was indeed waiting there, my name on it, etc. HOWEVER all three AT&T reps at the store refused to recognize my grandfathered AT&T plan and were willfully ignorant about everything: "sorry, but we can't help you and we don't even know the right procedure to help you" was a direct quote. The Apple guy who was helping me was completely dumbfounded by that answer and spent about a hour trying to navigate the bureaucracy, but in the end AT&T would not let Apple sell me a phone that wasn't activated in the store.

In contrast the Apple people were lovely and handed out fresh doughnuts and Peets coffee to everyone in line.

Anyway, I just wrote an email to Steve Jobs - not groveling for a free phone or anything, but man - if Apple could just buy out AT&T customer service that would go a long way.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 June 2010 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

My buddy is updating his FB whilst in line in denver. Apparently he's been there for hours, and the Apple people ordered Chic-fil-a for everybody.

Me, my upgrade isnt until the 1st/2nd week of august.

Don Homer (kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2010 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

When did you check that? I checked a month ago and they said I wasn't eligible for upgrade until November then I spoke to AT&T again a couple of weeks ago and they had updated me to early upgrade ( w/ $16? Early upgrade fee).

knocking u out like rocky balboa (sunny successor), Friday, 25 June 2010 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

Oh i didn't check it. I just assumed it would be a round 2 years. Hmm.

Don Homer (kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

Here's what the website tells me:

Retail purchase (no preorder): AT&T plans to have iPhone 4 inventory — available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last — on June 29 in its retail locations, at www.att.com, and in business sales channels. As inventory sells out, AT&T will offer the convenient option of purchasing iPhone 4 and having it delivered to a home or business or an AT&T store. As always, customers will receive an email once their order is placed, and again when it ships.

Also, I'm still on unemployment, so hopefully the initial spurts will have calmed down enough for me to upgrade and renew in a month or so.

Non issue. Just avoid grandfathering your plan.

Non issue. Just avoid grandfathering your plan.

Can't keep number and lose $230 credit that I already have with it. Also would have to pay deposit on new service.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 June 2010 07:36 (sixteen years ago)

sorry was just mimicking jobs' earlier email. let us know if he gets back to you :)

hi bianca :x (cozen), Friday, 25 June 2010 07:41 (sixteen years ago)

Two hour line at our Apple store yesterday. Not too bad all told, and the screen is wonderful. Also quite happy that we both qualified for fully subsidized pricing, despite being on a very low spending family line and having got 3GSs last year. By the time we sell those we should hopefully conme out slightly ahead financially, which still seems a bit weird (I know it's because the phone cost is subsidized by the contract, but still).

toby, Friday, 25 June 2010 10:30 (sixteen years ago)

With our family plan we only qualify for one at a fully subsidized price, the other will be $499. Bought 3gs's day one last year.

Going to try again this morning. Rumor has it that the Michigan ave store has some stock left.

Jeff, Friday, 25 June 2010 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

Ok, in line again.

Jeff, Friday, 25 June 2010 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

So far my only annoyance is that you cannot continue to browse in safari whilst playing an iPlayer Radio stream.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 25 June 2010 11:48 (sixteen years ago)

My only annoyance is that I have only paid for like 3 apps in my entire life and one of the won't open in iOS 4. (It's an UNO clone so it's not actually a big deal; just annoying)

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

isn't the licensed uno on sale for £0.59/$0.99 right now? problem solved maybe :)

hi bianca :x (cozen), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

ah shi- just looked, seems like you missed out by a day or so

hi bianca :x (cozen), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

so q:

do i a) upgrade to os4 on my jailbroken phone and just assume i won't be getting a new one for a while (it's only a year old) or b) upgrade to a new phone (only $199 for me apparently) and try and sell the jbroken one on ebay

flapjackin (gbx), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

upgrade and sell IMO

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

see what i am wondering is this: will my 'qualified' status for the subsidized phone....expire? like if i wait until the end of the summer?

flapjackin (gbx), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

upgrade and sell to me

caek, Friday, 25 June 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

might also be worth unlocking the jailbroken phone, if possible, will probably give you a bit more value?

hi bianca :x (cozen), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think that status ever expires; both my wife and I qualified and we updated our phones 1.5 (for her)/1 (for me) year ago.

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

caek: ok

flapjackin (gbx), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

cool, i will post you a copy of my thesis and some undeveloped film

caek, Friday, 25 June 2010 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

another annoyance; the stupid bullshit Playmesh games that I play when on the john or trying to fall asleep are tied to your device, so I now have to start over on all of them after getting to the point where I was making billions of dollars a day in all of them ;_; ;_; ;_;

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

Yay. Got 3 iPhone 4's. Finally.

Jeff, Friday, 25 June 2010 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

Not 3. 2 of them. 3 would be absurd.

Jeff, Friday, 25 June 2010 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

lolz

Non issue. Just avoid grandfathering your plan.

Also, ATT have implemented a no unlimited data plan policy for new accounts. existing account can keep unlimited data

post class A nasal drip (sunny successor), Friday, 25 June 2010 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

people who are selling your iphone 3GSs, how much are you getting?

mine is unlocked and not jailbroken, but has lots of fine scratches from not using a case. wondering if I should sell and upgrade.

crüt it out (dyao), Friday, 25 June 2010 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

Apple/AT&T are selling new 3GSs for$99 so it would have to be a lot less than that

post class A nasal drip (sunny successor), Saturday, 26 June 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

Also found out today that when AT&T switches to 4G network (which has to be real soon - sprint have had 4g forever and verizon are rolling theirs out in july) the iPhone 4 won't be able to use it. It will default to 3G. So I think I'm going to wait for the next one.

post class A nasal drip (sunny successor), Saturday, 26 June 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

AT&T will switch to 4G very slowly if previous rollouts are anything to go by, sprint's coverage is still very very limited, besides AT&T is going with LTE (like sprint) which doesn't offer much more than the current HSPA. Not saying you shouldn't wait but I wouldn't make 4G the reason.

App store reviewers are worse than yelpers, the bile and vitriol heaped on developers who haven't made their apps iOS and multitasking compliant yet is staggering.

That said the first developer to make a gtalk client that works properly with iOS 4 will get my dollar.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 26 June 2010 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

Until recently I worked in IT at V3rizon and they're definitely rolling out LTE and 4G in July. Actually 4G is already out there they just haven't 'switched it on yet'. Still testing. I think the 18th is the officially date. Anyway, since Vz and AT&T are each others main competitors I can't imagine AT&T being far behind.

post class A nasal drip (sunny successor), Saturday, 26 June 2010 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

good point about the 3gs now being $99 (but that's w/ 2 yr plan obv, mine is unlocked but I'm not sure what other data networks work with it in the US). maybe I'll just 'sell' it to my mom

crüt it out (dyao), Saturday, 26 June 2010 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

giving mine to dad

cutty, Saturday, 26 June 2010 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

If it's unlocked can you do a prepaid thing with it?? Maybe pp will buy it. He's looking for a prepay phone but they all suck ass

post class A nasal drip (sunny successor), Saturday, 26 June 2010 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

probably but I dunno if they do prepaid data plans. I would feel weird selling it to another ILXor though, what if it breaks, etc. etc.

crüt it out (dyao), Saturday, 26 June 2010 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

AT&T and T-Mobile are your options in the US for unlocked iPhone, Cricket and boost I think are MVNOs and probably your best options for prepay data.

I don't doubt AT&T and Verizon are on the verge of rolling out LTE, I'm not so sure that Apple will put it into the iPhone any time soon. Remember that the original iPhone was EDGE only and 3G coverage was pretty extensive. I'd bet on 2012 before we see an LTE capable iPhone.
