I swear, if I have similar problems with iPhone 4 I will get violent

Took a few hours to back up and install everything, but pleasantly surprised that my 3G actually runs a lot more smoothly now. Guessing in restoring during the update it managed to sort itself out. So much so I reckon I can happily wait til next year to upgrade to 4 now.
Although I put everything in to folders and am now sad I can't habitually flick through 8 pages of apps. Think thats the main reason I like this phone tbh.

the camera is faster now

Podcasts were acting weird for me today. iTunes syncing duplicate episodes over to the phone, which was then failing to show time elapsed during playback, all sorts of oddness.

3G feels much slowere and even more responsive than before right now. screw this

12 months @ £20 w/£350 for the phone = about £100 more over the year than you'd pay for an unlocked phone

so engadget managed to get 38 hours out of this thing between charges?
― crüt it out (dyao), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 12:55 (sixteen years ago)
Syncing my new phone now! This has been easier so far than upgrading my 3g.
― schwantz, Thursday, 24 June 2010 00:32 (sixteen years ago)
Talk about the aerials on the 4 shorting out when you hold it and it losing all signal.
― stet, Thursday, 24 June 2010 00:59 (sixteen years ago)
do you mean less responsive? confused. not sure whether we should bother upgrading my wife's 3g; she's due an upgrade anyway.

Engadget is now reporting, however, that several scratches have been discovered on the back of its review unit after only five days of use.The photo you're seeing above is our leader Joshua's iPhone 4 review unit, snapped by Ryan Block just moments ago. Ryan pointed out that there are some nasty scratches on the back of the phone. While we don't have any better photos of it at the moment, Josh told us that they're hard to see unless in bright light, but they look pretty notable to us for a five day-old unit made of Gorilla Glass.

apple news coverage is really a world of its own, isn't it.

BREAKING!
So far, no yellow spots, and my hand doesn't seem to cause any de-sense. Maybe I'm not sweaty enough. My one FaceTime call was actually kind-of cool.

For UKers, vodafone are taking orders online now, just got one for delivery tomorrow...let's see whether that happens.

lots of talk about this and some p.worrying videos; has there been any update? could it be a software issue?

they were queuing outside hammersmith 02 shop this morning. and all the staff were in sainsburys in their apple iphone 4 branded tshirts.

apparently having a bumper stops this from happening?

It does!
― Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, tried one today and it definitely happens, and goes away when you insulate the aerial. They should give away the bumpers, or this will turn into a massive whingefest by Monday.
― stet, Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:50 (sixteen years ago)
iPhone 4 waiting or me when I got home, this screen is fucking awesome, shame I'm still waiting for my activation to go through. Playing with it on wifi.
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)
Couldn't do the line today. Several thousand people in it, upwards of a five hour wait, even for reserved. I'll have to wait a few weeks.
― Jeff, Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:56 (sixteen years ago)
These lines are totally about publicity, aren't they? Absolutely nothing to stop them being better organized.
― stet, Thursday, 24 June 2010 23:58 (sixteen years ago)
Yup, free column inches will be massive tomorrow. To be fair though it doesn't so apple any favours to build too much stock in advance, inventory costs money to hold.
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:04 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, but they could at least have organised it better for the pre-orders, with collection slots or similar. Having people waiting five hours when they'd reserved in advance is a bit much.

MacRumors forum user samcraig emailed Steve Jobs about the low signal issue while holding the new iPhone 4 in a specific way. The potential issue has been generating a lot of discussion. Samcraig emailed Steve Jobs:Question - What's going to be done about the signal dropping issue. Is it software or hardware? To which, Jobs replied with a typically short response:Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way.In a followup email, Jobs then expanded with this explanation:Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.Steve Jobs has been known to respond to emails and we were able to log into Samcraig's email account to verify the authenticity of the emails, so we believe these are real.

I should post this here, too. Dan Harmon from "Community" spent like all yesterday playing with his new iphone and posting the results to twitter:

making people queue when they were organised enough to order in advance is moronic
xposts
I tried to make the signal loss issue happen but couldn't, I get pretty good signal in my flat, I guess I'll have to learn how to hold my phone before I go to new york next.

First email is definitely Jobs; second email is PR and Legal

So I had a phone reserved for me this morning and it was indeed waiting there, my name on it, etc. HOWEVER all three AT&T reps at the store refused to recognize my grandfathered AT&T plan and were willfully ignorant about everything: "sorry, but we can't help you and we don't even know the right procedure to help you" was a direct quote. The Apple guy who was helping me was completely dumbfounded by that answer and spent about a hour trying to navigate the bureaucracy, but in the end AT&T would not let Apple sell me a phone that wasn't activated in the store.
In contrast the Apple people were lovely and handed out fresh doughnuts and Peets coffee to everyone in line.
Anyway, I just wrote an email to Steve Jobs - not groveling for a free phone or anything, but man - if Apple could just buy out AT&T customer service that would go a long way.

My buddy is updating his FB whilst in line in denver. Apparently he's been there for hours, and the Apple people ordered Chic-fil-a for everybody.
Me, my upgrade isnt until the 1st/2nd week of august.
― Don Homer (kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2010 01:55 (sixteen years ago)
When did you check that? I checked a month ago and they said I wasn't eligible for upgrade until November then I spoke to AT&T again a couple of weeks ago and they had updated me to early upgrade ( w/ $16? Early upgrade fee).
― knocking u out like rocky balboa (sunny successor), Friday, 25 June 2010 02:04 (sixteen years ago)
Oh i didn't check it. I just assumed it would be a round 2 years. Hmm.
― Don Homer (kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)
Here's what the website tells me:
Retail purchase (no preorder): AT&T plans to have iPhone 4 inventory — available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last — on June 29 in its retail locations, at www.att.com, and in business sales channels. As inventory sells out, AT&T will offer the convenient option of purchasing iPhone 4 and having it delivered to a home or business or an AT&T store. As always, customers will receive an email once their order is placed, and again when it ships.
Also, I'm still on unemployment, so hopefully the initial spurts will have calmed down enough for me to upgrade and renew in a month or so.
― Don Homer (kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2010 02:13 (sixteen years ago)
'Just avoid holding it in that way.'
― James Mitchell, Friday, 25 June 2010 03:58 (sixteen years ago)
Non issue. Just avoid grandfathering your plan.
― hi bianca :x (cozen), Friday, 25 June 2010 06:59 (sixteen years ago)
Can't keep number and lose $230 credit that I already have with it. Also would have to pay deposit on new service.
― Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 June 2010 07:36 (sixteen years ago)
sorry was just mimicking jobs' earlier email. let us know if he gets back to you :)
― hi bianca :x (cozen), Friday, 25 June 2010 07:41 (sixteen years ago)
Two hour line at our Apple store yesterday. Not too bad all told, and the screen is wonderful. Also quite happy that we both qualified for fully subsidized pricing, despite being on a very low spending family line and having got 3GSs last year. By the time we sell those we should hopefully conme out slightly ahead financially, which still seems a bit weird (I know it's because the phone cost is subsidized by the contract, but still).
― toby, Friday, 25 June 2010 10:30 (sixteen years ago)
With our family plan we only qualify for one at a fully subsidized price, the other will be $499. Bought 3gs's day one last year.
Going to try again this morning. Rumor has it that the Michigan ave store has some stock left.
― Jeff, Friday, 25 June 2010 11:18 (sixteen years ago)
Ok, in line again.
― Jeff, Friday, 25 June 2010 11:40 (sixteen years ago)
So far my only annoyance is that you cannot continue to browse in safari whilst playing an iPlayer Radio stream.
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 25 June 2010 11:48 (sixteen years ago)
My only annoyance is that I have only paid for like 3 apps in my entire life and one of the won't open in iOS 4. (It's an UNO clone so it's not actually a big deal; just annoying)
