I'll concede there are many less funny shows currently on television than BBT. Anything with Tyler Perry's name on it for starters. Oh, and The Office.

Whatever you think of these shows, they all lost to UNDERCOVER BOSS. WHA?!

BBT is weird because it contains a lot of smart and seemingly well researched references, but the plots themselves are lowest-common-denominator sitcom schlock. Raj gets drunk and sleeps with a fat lady! Penny's friends don't like Leonard because he doesn't understand football! Howard and his mom yell at each other a lot!

I still watch it and enjoy it, but Community is the better show and it pisses me off that they're going head to head.

It actually reminds me a lot of Couplings.

shows like this and modern family are STREETS AHEAD of Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother, both of which I think are truly charmless and terrible.

At its best, HIMYM is a contender to Arrested Development for best developed sitcom universe, with a million callbacks, well-planned arcs and charming actors (who doesn't like Jason Segel, Allyson Hannigan or Neil Patrick Harris off the bat?). At its worst, it's just another Friends clone with one of the most unlikeable main characters I've ever seen in a sitcom.

NPH is almost never funny on that show. Most of the humor comes from the women and Jason Siegel.

The only reason BBT is such a runaway success is because half the cast of Roseanne are in and out of there on such a regular basis that people are confused and think they're watching something that's good.

I am going to guess the ratings thing has a lot to do with cbs generally getting higher ratings, ppl putting it on the channel for the night, etc., and that I think a lot of community's views are web or dvr rather than primetime on the air and ratings don't usually account for that. Like, I watched all of this season on hulu and saw maybe one episode live on air, while I've never seen an ep of BBT opr HIMYM.

well, Big Bang Theory definitely had a leg up in that it was put in an already successful comedy block alongside the highest rated sitcom on TV, but it's an actual popular show in its own right that people actually like. don't know why that's so hard to understand or why people on any thread about a show on NBC or cable have to be totally condescending toward less hip types of shows, frankly.

i don't think online viewing factors into ratings but now that networks have figured how to monetize that stuff i think shows that do get lots of views on hulu or whatever are probably helped by that in terms of not getting cancelled, etc.

tbf, I'd much rather watch BBT than about 100 other sitcoms that have come and gone on the networks over the last several years. So, I don't hate it by any means.

I think it's legit to be upset that a show you like isn't as popular as another show, especially if you feel like what's rewarding about a show is that it takes a little attentiveness (at least as far as television goes) to enjoy, while other really popular shows seem to be spoon-feeding really well-tred sitcom ground. Which isn't to say there's anything wrong about just wanting to see something familiar (arguably that's what the mimetic impulse is anyway), but that I definitely get frustrated when shows like Party Down, Community, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny or whatever are way less popular than Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory. Chuck Lorre is really good at making shows that people find instantly accessible and enjoy easily, but sometimes I don't want to just watch something instantly accessible. (Obviously this is very YMMV, as even the shows I mentioned aren't particular dense, none of this is like cracking your teeth on Pynchon or whatever.)

Yeah, King of Queens works when you can watch two episodes back to back when nothing else is on. It's utilitarian in its funniness. I couldn't imagine scheduling time to watch a new one each week, though (but millions of people did, so what do I know!).

TBH, both Community and Big Bang Theory strike me as relatively straightforward sitcoms with a twist, especially compared to something like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (or HIMYM on the other end of the spectrum). A sitcom about physics professors actually seems like a pretty bold concept to me. An episode like the one where Sheldon devises an algorithm to understand friendship seems as clever to me as some of the things that Community does. (I can totally believe that the later seasons of BBT may have gotten worse though.)

Apparently there's gonna be a 6-hour hosted marathon of this Thursday -- maybe NBC is making a big push for it before the next season starts? i can only hope they plan to stand behind the show.

They got screwed by the Emmys.

I've not really followed the Emmys before but they seem to be a bit of a joke - no Justified or Sons of Anarchy or Community nods, at all, but loads for Glee? Lame.

I'm gonna watch the hell out of the Community marathon tonight!

OK, after watching some more BBT, I'll concede that it is less innovative than Community. I think I was just really charmed by the math and science references.
