the whole thing has brought jesse nothing but absolute misery its actually so depressing isn't it

Jesse seems like the kind of guy who would've figured out a way to screw up his life regardless, but yeah there is no denying that Walt hasn't exactly set him on a road to life success.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:42 (sixteen years ago)
well he (was) clean and also rich...when walt met him he was prob worse off again. it's impossible to blame walt imo, eg he'd never have met jane if it wasn't for getting involved with walt either.

he turned out to not be a very good "the bad guy" tho i guess.

"it's impossible to blame walt imo, eg he'd never have met jane if it wasn't for getting involved with walt either"
Wouldn't not having met Jane been a good thing? Not just for him, but also her and a whole plane full of people!
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)
crediting Walt for Jess meeting Jane is a little too "butterfly flapping it's wings" to be credible.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:53 (sixteen years ago)
I've been trying to skim this thread fast enough to avoid spoilers, but the general OMG SO GOOD tone on this thread prompted me to get S1 yesterday.
― Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)
yeah of course, i agree, but so is blaming walt for jesse's current status.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 10 June 2010 23:01 (sixteen years ago)
That isn't what I said. I said that being in business Walt hasn't improved Jesse's life. It's pretty to hard to argue otherwise.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 June 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)
not that hard, he's richer, he's not a meth-head anymore. he has a pretty massive financial foundation to fall back on which would be a major help if he decides to start sorting out his psychological/emotional probs.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 10 June 2010 23:13 (sixteen years ago)
"he's not a meth-head anymore"
Uh did you not watch the last episode? We'll see if stays clean long term.
I think his psychological/emotional problems have only been compounded since knowing Walt. Money's not really much of a solution for those kinds of issues.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 June 2010 23:17 (sixteen years ago)
Reckon Jesse's pretty much responsible for his own fate - he has just as much capacity for making poor decisions as Walt, though he's a far less extraordinary person so his bad decisions have smaller-scale effects. Walt's never really coerced him into doing anything, as Jesse is the person Walt is most honest with, and Walt uses duplicity to coerce.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 10 June 2010 23:26 (sixteen years ago)
where would he be without walt? prob even worse off...
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 10 June 2010 23:27 (sixteen years ago)
Worse off than his suicidally self-destructive current self? I guess I don't see it.
"Reckon Jesse's pretty much responsible for his own fate"
Totally agree, but I think that at the same time that choosing to align his fate with Walt has not resulted in much benefit (beyond money.)
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 June 2010 17:30 (sixteen years ago)
Jesse living out his days as Capn' Cook, at worst he'd be in jail without meeting Walt. As he said earlier this season, he didn't have people constantly beating the crap out of him and/or trying to kill him, his game never would've been elevated to that level besides being pushed around by low-level guys like Crazy 8
― Nhex, Friday, 11 June 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
the way i see it is Jess was never destined for big things on his own. Walt shows up and actually accomplishes some stuff with Jessy. so now instead of Jessy having the small problems of a small-time nobody cook - he has the bigass problems of a big time meth producer. his natural tendency is to fuck things up - Walt has only given Jess the opportunity to screw up and suffer on a much larger scale.

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 11 June 2010 18:02 (sixteen years ago)
but jesse took the opportunity. jesse introduced walt to that world at the beginning. they are a partnership.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 12 June 2010 00:30 (sixteen years ago)
jesse doesnt bring anything to the partnership anymore now that gus is involved
time for jesse's funeral
― jeff, Saturday, 12 June 2010 05:15 (sixteen years ago)
^^^this is true, but i would still be really surprised if jesse is killed. not that BB has ever failed to surprise of course!
i think saving him will take greater recognition on walt's part of how son-like jesse has become to him (thinking of the lecture in the car last ep).
― like a guttenberg, strong with your mane (another al3x), Saturday, 12 June 2010 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
I feel like axing jesse is the right way to go here. The only thing that would really surprise me would be if Walt died. Or Gus.
― I have been forks-style since day one (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 12 June 2010 20:17 (sixteen years ago)
I'm not sure the show would be quite as watchable without Jesse and his Jesse-isms.
― Simon H., Saturday, 12 June 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)
i doubt it's gonna happen. if the show wouldn't even kill Hank, they're not gonna let Pinkman go
― Nhex, Sunday, 13 June 2010 00:27 (sixteen years ago)
wow that preview was great - like if i had to try to pitch this show to a newcomer in a couple minutes, i might just use that
i remember a great vince gilligan interview a year or two ago where he said he didn't anticipate letting his main characters get off easily. if this show goes on for four seasons - which is how long he envisioned it running, iirc - i gotta think that he considers death one of those easy fates

man every season it just keeps piling on how sorry I feel for Jesse, like... damn.
very informative interview with Gilligan here, surprised how much they winged it this season, considering it's been the best imo!

alright so the hero of this episode and the entire season is saul
i really hope jesse maybe like, shot gale's arm to leave a bullet hole in the wall and blood on the floor, and then absconded with him somewhere to get him out of the picture? cause to kill gale is just heartless, i mean the guy tended to succulents
― del griffith, Monday, 14 June 2010 03:49 (sixteen years ago)
nah, according to the interview it wasn't the intent of that shot - gale's dead period, no turning back for jesse now

― del griffith, Monday, 14 June 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)
watched it for maybe five minutes, decided to wait for reviews and maybe a dvd release. but it looks as unappealing to me as Mad Men already
― Nhex, Monday, 14 June 2010 03:56 (sixteen years ago)
Gale wasn't an innocent. Gus made it very clear to him that he was going to kill Walt, and Gale made it that he would try to learn as fast as possible so Gus could expedite Walt's murder. Bitch fucked with the wrong chem teacher.

Between this and Justified going off, I feel like it's the long dark moment for quality TV.Fucking good ending to the season. Still the best show on TV right now.

this, from the Sepinwall review linked to above, is OTM
But the beautiful thing about "Breaking Bad" is that Walt is even smarter, and far more dangerous, than even a man like Gus might recognize - or, in fact, more than we might. When Gus visited Gale's apartment and started laying the groundwork for murdering Walt without scaring off his replacement, I was terrified that Walt had no idea of the metaphorical shiny ax hanging over him. Instead, we learned in the visit to Lazer Base that Walt was already two steps ahead of both me and Gus - and, having accepted his status as a murderer with his actions at the end of "Half Measures," that he was prepared to end Gale's life to save his own.As you'll read in the interview, Walt's emasculation for much of this season wasn't by design, but rather a byproduct of how the Cousins' story was unfolding. But the upside of Heisenberg's prolonged absence is that we grew to miss him while he was gone. It was cathartic to see Walt take out the two dealers last week, to see him don the familiar black porkpie hat, and to see him get the better of Mike at the laundromat and bark out Gale's address and a triumphant "Yeah" as Mike and Victor realized what was about to happen. (And I'll admit to being briefly fooled into thinking Walt was selling out Jesse to save himself, which made the phone call even better.)

Such a dark, sad, end - Jesse's tearful, slightly high face killed me. Easily the best season yet.
Bring on Mad Men in July and The Walking Dead in October...

gale singing along to the song is one of my favourite scenes from this series; that was brilliant

That was simply incredible. In terms of pure storytelling chops, I'm hard pressed to think of a better TV show, like ever.
I think S2 will remain my favourite for its ruthless precision, but this one topped it in terms of character depth and assurance.

i forgot that walking dead was coming to TV!
Only just found out! I found what I read of the comic quite underwhelming, gotta say, but will certainly give the show a shot.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Monday, 14 June 2010 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
The comic is great in long runs and should translate amazingly to tv; it reads like a storyboard. My only regret is that there are numerous major plot twists I already know about.
― I have been forks-style since day one (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 June 2010 14:22 (sixteen years ago)
xp Felt similarly about the comic, tried the first three or four volumes and was pretty underwhelmed. OTOH, though, there's a good chance they can adjust it well to the TV format, if they condense arcs further than the book did.
