Orthopedist appointment today. Cautiously optimistic. I can almost walk without a limp now!
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:12 (sixteen years ago)
So my official time for the 10 mile race was 2:09:16. That blazing time was good enough for 830/860 for my age group, 3557th place for men, and 7908th place overall. Splits:
1 – 8:222 – 8:283 – 9:33 (knee pain starts)4 – 10:51 (walking starts)5 – 14:286 – 15:017 – 15:478 – 15:36 (speeding up!)9 – 15:21 (zoooooom)10 – 15:29 (thumbs down)
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:14 (sixteen years ago)
I was feeling great at the start of the race too. If my needs didn't rebel against me, I'm sure I could have gotten between 1:25 and 1:30.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:15 (sixteen years ago)
needs = knees? haha
i have been running a lot with carl (my dog) and today i went out by myself and (sorry carl) it was wonderful. kinda hard to zone out with a dog to look out for. i've been doing pretty well lately.

Congrats just for doing it!
― forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 14:11 (sixteen years ago)
seriously, jeff. i'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you wanted it to, but you kept going. that's a lot of tenacity right there.

I'm very stubborn, it's one of my best qualities as a runner.
Doc today said no damage to my knees, it's just the ITB. Physical therapy 3x a week and I can start marathon training on time. Relief.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 14:44 (sixteen years ago)
yay!

The Imogene Pass Run (IPR) is a 17.1 mile point-to-point mountain race within the western San Juan mountains of Colorado, run along a route which connects the towns of Ouray (7810 ft.) and Telluride (8820 ft.) by way of 13,120 foot Imogene Pass.
thx to fairly massive peer pressure and boredom i just registered for this with a current running base of ... nuthin. :0
im taking advice that does not involve bailing (for now)
― a cooler full of courage and panache (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)
arent you p hardcore into biking/swimming? you may not set any records but a reasonably fit dude shouldnt have any problems finishing imo
i mean ive only been swimming on the reg for like ~6 months & even tho im running less my pace is better now then when i was running 3x a week
― Lamp, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)
okay, i can't run any more. at least not for a week or so. right knee finally shit the bed: can't make my joints move like 'running' only like 'weak-ass hobbling' even when i'm trying to walk, so i'm gonna try to get some crazy cardio done on the stupid ellipticals. super bummed :(
― ampersand (remy bean), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:21 (sixteen years ago)
i'm reasonably recreationally fit on the bike. probly rec+ fit.
i think my biggest prob, as it always is with running, will be keeping my knees and foot tendons healthy. i tend to break down when running volume gets above 18-20 mi/week. plus im getting a little old for this type of "just jump in and do it" approach.
― a cooler full of courage and panache (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:36 (sixteen years ago)
That sounds like a beast of a race! Next week I'm running a marathon that starts at 6 metres above sea level and goes up to 25 metres by the end.
― seandalai, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:47 (sixteen years ago)
First physical therapy appointment was this morning. Not too bad. Not running again until next Monday. Then it's go time.
― Jeff, Thursday, 3 June 2010 00:10 (sixteen years ago)
Funny! No physical therapy, but I'm gonna take off until Monday to fix my battered right knee.

lovin it, thats one hell of a climb! if you could get to the stage of one 10 mile hill climb and a couple of shorter runs a week you should be able to give it a good nudge-Ive never quite understood the "hope to be able to finish it" mentality if youre not injured.
just started training for this bad boy at the end of the year,

wow, good luck and have fun, that looks really hard.
i do wish i had more than 3 months, and i pray for good weather--
Of the 29 runnings of the IPR to date, thirteen runs have been conducted during good to excellent weather conditions (sunny to partly cloudy skies, warm temperatures in the valleys with cool temperatures on the pass, calm winds, a dry course with no new snow on the ground.... The five runs in th[e bad weather] category all began in moderate weather with indications of improving conditions. Instead, the weather degenerated sometime after the start into the intense and fast moving snow storms which are typical of early Fall. Two to eight inches of snow fell (drifting to 12 inches in 1985) at the summit during the running of these races, taxing our rescue support ability as well as the life systems of many runners. Several improperly dressed runners were treated for hypothermia on either side of the pass during the 1985, 1991 and 2002 runnings.

my run was wonderful this morning. 60 degrees, hazy, dog was behaving, no aches/pains/wheezing/headaches. hooray!

yeah, ultra guys are just, whoa. actually, the guy who founded the imogene pass run (in the 70s afaik) is the brother of a friend of mine, just pretty crazy hardcore. for a while he held the record for climbing all of colorado's 14ers (like 14.5 days). he also won the hardrock 100 ultra while in his 40s.

not cheating, everyone does it. that's how people get kickstarter to work afaict

haha. i think i am going to just send a really desperate final plea?
― tehresa, Friday, 4 June 2010 02:44 (sixteen years ago)
IT band pain while walking to the train today. My knee was buckling and that is only after 3 blocks. I'm schedule for 3 miles on Monday. I think I'm going to inquire about getting a refund on my marathon training program.
― Jeff, Friday, 4 June 2010 13:56 (sixteen years ago)
Sorry to hear that, jeff. I am thinking that since tomorrow is only 5k I'm just gonna go nuts and try to ignore the heat in the interest of not being insanely slow. So frustrated that I've not gotten home before 8:30 once this week and have basically not done any training in the last week. How do I shot morning energy tomorrow?
― tehresa, Saturday, 5 June 2010 00:44 (sixteen years ago)
dope
― gbx, Saturday, 5 June 2010 01:30 (sixteen years ago)
That sucks, Jeff. Hope your knee recovers.
I managed my first unbroken (as in not stopping to walk at any point) run last night - 2.8 miles. Could have kept going, too, which was nice. Had an awful, disheartening run in the heat after work on Wednesday but then had an upset stomach later that evening, so assume I was affected by that while running. Back to feeling quite good about it all now, and have new running headphones!
Which is good, because on Tuesday evening I'm running 5k for charity, which obviously isn't far, but it's quite a big deal. If anyone's super flush and generous and wants to sponsor me, feel free - http://www.justgiving.com/nicksouthall
― Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 5 June 2010 09:10 (sixteen years ago)
Oh, ran again this morning, did about 4 miles I think, few pauses to run (no breakfast = lack of energy - need to find that balance between having energy and not feeling like I'm going to barf while running).
― Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 5 June 2010 09:11 (sixteen years ago)
I did ask for a refund on my training program. I still plan on running the marathon in October, but I just didn't want it hanging over my head that I paid so much money for a training group and wouldn't be able to make the mileage. I'm almost certain that would have made me run injured.
― Jeff, Saturday, 5 June 2010 14:42 (sixteen years ago)
well i decided not to worry about time because guess what? when there are tens of thousands of people you really can not run very fast. i am not sure what my official time is but based on my own tracking i was faster than my last 'official' 5k but not as fast as some training times i have had. at any rate, it was kind of an amazing event!!!
― tehresa, Saturday, 5 June 2010 15:02 (sixteen years ago)
ps mad props to the producers of the tv show "hawthorne" who had ppl giving 5 min chair massage/rub downs at their promotional tent

― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Saturday, 5 June 2010 15:51 (sixteen years ago)
god my official time was just over 30 and even though i decided not to worry about it that is just super frustrating because i feel like if i had not been weaving through people and some woman had not walked in my way right at the finish line, i would have been fine. but i have to remember: not about time, not about time!
― tehresa, Saturday, 5 June 2010 16:03 (sixteen years ago)
That's an obstacle course! Imho that's a great time, even though as agreed it's not about time... Glad you enjoyed the whole thing.
― ljubljana, Saturday, 5 June 2010 16:45 (sixteen years ago)
sounds like fun, I've never done an "official" 5k but I'd like to try some this summer

Just ran a 16 miler while under the weather (I left work sick on Friday with a stomach bug/headache, and it's stuck with me over the weekend)... probably not the best idea, but I pulled through alive and shuffling along. OUCH...

I did the charity 5k last night in 29:01, so chuffed to have done it in under 30 minutes! I came 574th out of a field of over 1200. Not bad for a fat man who's only been running for about 2 months.
― Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 07:18 (sixteen years ago)

1st run of my running programme today and the first time I've ever done a timed 5K; feeling pretty sore in the calves right now, which is unusual, but I did go a bit harder than usual since I was timing
