Chicago: home of the President of the United fucking States

I said this in an email to Jenny, but for me it boils down to the likely fact that a lot of people into local art and the Reader and whatever gave a lot of time and money to help the campaign, and that portrayal of Obama kind of shits on that effort. Then again, what do I know about art.

xpost!

So I opened this thread to see if there was any good Obamarally stuff (k@tie has been in hiding all day) and now find myself thinking that a popcorn bag handjob would be really unpleasant what with the grains of salt and all.

I don't know if this is widely known yet. As I was on (partial) bad news hiatus, I only learned of it through a friend's IM.

Not sure quite Fox is up to here - they seem to be dumping blame on Palin at times, but then later it seems more evened out. Interesting nonetheless. I smell a tell-all book coming out.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 6 November 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

and john - how on earth did u meet obama??

At this thing.

I'm not sure why Sarah was asking about it today. Maybe just how does it feel to have met the guy who is now the president-elect?

jaymc, Thursday, 6 November 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

that is wild

deej, Thursday, 6 November 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

In '02, my boss at the time sent me an e-mail for a $10/ticket happy hour with Obama at HotHouse, promoting his run for the senate. Missed that! Alas!

Eazy, Thursday, 6 November 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

I know the two pubs in Wokingham/Bracknell where he went to that stag do...

Mark G, Thursday, 6 November 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

i've been meaning to write a complainy email to the Reader since they had a two-week stretch where they covered exactly zero local bands in all of their music coverage, but was worried it might sound like sour grapes coming from me.

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 6 November 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but they had that great cover story about an obese internet fraud! that was almost as good as the drano-drinking party girl they covered a few years ago.

La Lechera, Thursday, 6 November 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

"great"

La Lechera, Thursday, 6 November 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

At the same time, John Burge was arrested this week -- he's the retired police captain who had a hand in all of those violent interrogations that the Reader spent years investigating (until the paper laid off its investigative reporters).

The Reader was one of the primary reasons I moved to Chicago -- back when they were reviewing every single play running in town. I feel a little akin to an early-on Rod Stewart fan, not sure whether to give up to be grateful for glimpses of what used to be there.

Eazy, Thursday, 6 November 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

I posted my 2¢ on their blog.

Re. the Obama cover.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 6 November 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

There's also a Studs painting, not sure if it's his, that mimics the Obama posters and says HOPE DIES LAST. Jesus.

This is the name of a recent Terkel book.

jaymc, Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

OMG, there is a rumor floating around internet soccer circles that Obama and the girls will be at tonight's Fire/New England playoff match.

good luck usa (dan m), Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

This is the name of a recent Terkel book.

But, again, kind of like the cover, I don't mind the sentiment as much as the cheap execution: feels like "Obama hope campaign" + "Studs Turkel is dead" + book title = HOPE DIES LAST.

Studs dies last? WTF?

Compare this to the photo that the Reader ran 12 years ago in a feature about him:

Yeah, I'm not really feeling too sorry for him.

I gotta say, Lasers and Fast and Shit is the best band name I've heard in a long time.

NORTH CAROLINA! Raise up!

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Thursday, 6 November 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

Wooooo - Now NC is the bluest state in the fucking country.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 6 November 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

My brother, who lives in NC, said that his son Bradley's senior year civics class had mock presidential debates. Bradley was assigned the role of BHO and the teacher moderated. As moderator she asked, "What do each of you think of Obama's lack of experience?"

When Bradley answered the (leading) question by pointing out that Palin also lacked experience, the teacher/moderator got angry and started arguing with my nephew, defending McCain/Palin. It's worth pointing that this happened at a good private school.

OK...what's weird here?

Bush Calls Obama

The White House press office says that President Bush called to congratulate Barack Obama at 11:12pm this evening. A couple of quotes from the press release:

"Mr. President-elect, congratulations to you. What an awesome night for you, your family and your supporters. Laura and I called to congratulate you and your good bride."

I thought maybe it was an old-timey expression I wasn't familiar with, but Googling ["your good bride" -bush] only pulls up weird international dating services.

jaymc, Thursday, 6 November 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

has anyone read that sarah vowell book about puritans? if so, is it good?

La Lechera, Thursday, 6 November 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

That Bush quote is weird most of all because I can imagine him saying it, stuttering a bit, and it STILL sounds weird.

"Blessings upon you and your goodly wife. For your feasting table, we will be sending you a fine fat goose!"

don't forget there is a country far worse off than we are: Africa. (kenan), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

That is a very pretty dog.

don't forget there is a country far worse off than we are: Africa. (kenan), Thursday, 6 November 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

* enter Ferris Bueller dog theme song*

Work has been too much like work today, despite still being bossless.

Yeah, John, I was just thinking of your 0bama meeting because I looked on Nasta's page to try to find out if they did that song and saw your band pic with him again.
