Strange and sad that the diner on the corner of Summit Hill Drive is now a car rental place.

TELL ME ABOUT IT! That place had the best breakfast on earth, no more, no more. And they left it looking like a diner -- fucktards.

The pub in Woodruff's is actually ok, though!

And yes, I am in town, but I am leaving to go on tour tomorrow night, returning the 20th. My band is playing Sundown (omg) on the 22nd! Big exciting deal! You should stay.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

i've been to the pilot light.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I know that, and Bill Ward3n chased us out onto the dancefloor while we watched Cordero to make us pay for the beers I accidentally stole.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

In other news, I saw a white duck with its eye gouged out in Fountain City Park Saturday. It was gross.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

gotta love a duck

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

bill ward3n has a good name for someone who enforces admission fees.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

true

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

the beers I accidentally stole

Please to explain.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Ken and I on the last stop of Old City pub crawl, ordered two Schlitzes and just took them to the dance floor without paying. Faced. In my defense, Tenderhooks had just played a string of shows at the Pilot Light and I was used to drinking free beer there. Oops.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

and i thought USA people are supposed to really like folks with english accents and expected free drinks.

although the girl who works at tomato(head?) prolly didn't get freebies either.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Hey Roxy, myspace is being a douche, so I'll tell you here - in Louisville, you should try Headliner's, it is an awesome place and you guys would totally fit on their calender nicely.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Thank you Nicka!

although the girl who works at tomato(head?) prolly didn't get freebies either.

Oh right! I totally forgot her. She sadly does not work there anymore.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

what about emily2?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

was she the one who was playing the guy with the pretzel?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

emily2 quit working at Urban Bar and started waiting tables at Patrick Sullivan's (across the street). A week later I saw her working at Manhattan's (opposite corner in Old City), and now she is back at Urban Bar. Strange, but awesome, girl.

Re: pretzel -- ??

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

how timely, i am IN KNOXVILLE RIGHT NOW. seeing friends 'n' kinfolx, going down to bonnaroo (just for a day and night) this weekend. i'm leaving on the 20th tho so i can't see roxy's band, too bad. the old city is looking more decrepit than usual. but market square looks pretty good. (the little jumping-water fountains are very popular with the 21-month-old contingent of my family.) someone also told me that a judge just ruled the county's charter invalid for some technical reason, so apparently knox county at the moment does not actually exist. which seems about par for the course.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:24 (twenty years ago)

(and tracer if you're looking for a place to drink on weds. night the brewpub there on gay street usually has a good crowd. that's kind of the downtown boho-bobo drinking night, by longstanding tradition.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:25 (twenty years ago)

the old city is looking more decrepit than usual

You're insane! It's more happening/money-making than it has ever been!

Also, what about that new swank-ass club in the old Kimball's siamond store (omg) on Gay St. called Sapphire? Supposedly it is nice.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

diamond, obv

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

apparently, gyp, all the knoxblabbers are meeting at some show tomorrow? wish i could go, kinda.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

snigger @ gay st. :-D

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

well by the old city i mean specifically the jackson-central nexis. but i walked through it late afternoon on monday, which is probably not the best time to see it. the market square-gay street area is definitely livelier than it's been in years. sapphire's a nice addition, altho my reaction to it was, if i want $8 cocktails i'll just stay in new york. but i'm impressed they can get knoxvillians to pay those prices. there are actually two blabber confabs, one tonight at the brewpub and one sometime this weekend at bonnaroo. i don't imagine there'll be much to them except for drinking, but that's ok by me.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

snigger @ gay st. :-D

there have been periodic proposals to rename it over the years, none of which have gotten very far. the best intersection is gay and church -- which is just one block from church and state.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i just noticed church and state recently when driving home...there is a beautiful law office (i believe) there. i would love to live in that building.

there have been periodic proposals to rename it over the years, none of which have gotten very far.

sooo stupid.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 15 June 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

i like how the new swank-ass bar kept many of the old deco jewelry signage that was in the windows there, but i can't stand that kind of place, so i am going to save my money for sunday night at the barley, where i'm told there's some good music.

knoxville's downtown revitalization has apparently bypassed the whole "convince young people to live there" phase and has gone straight for the "convince millionaires to buy overpriced lofts" phase. one new condo going up on gay street actually advertises itself on the hoardings as "upscale condo apartments"!!!!

i have been inside the world grotto thingie now, roxy. it is kinda weird. but the huge dancefloor/event space downstairs looks mega! what is that?? the art gallery upstairs was hit and miss, mainly miss, but there's that one artist that has her cherry-lipped klimt thing down pat, and it's pretty nice. it seems like the kind of place that would be in ft. greene, brooklyn, actually.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 15 June 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

there's gotta be a condo bust coming soon. every other building or lot downtown is in some stage of condo conversion and i just can't believe there's quite that much pent-up demand.

that one artist that has her cherry-lipped klimt thing down pat, and it's pretty nice.

cynthia markert? i like her.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 15 June 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

didn't they rename john agee? street to some baseball player name or something?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:20 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
shameless spam for this here:

Noon to 7 p.m on Saturday, September 30 at Market Square.

The day-long event will be a celebration of East Tennessee Latino culture
filled with live music, food, arts and crafts displays and children's
activities.

Willie Crespo and Salsarengue will be arriving from Nashville to kick off the

Latin dance steps and Knoxville Opera will present highlights of their
upcoming production of "Carmen." The evening will end to the rhythms of Nuevo
Montuno, a tropical salsa band from Asheville, North Carolina.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 29 September 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 September 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Roxy are you goin to Hank Dayz??

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 September 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

I met a little girl in Knoxville,
A town you all know well,
And every Sunday evening
Down in her home I'd dwell.

We went to take an evening walk
About a mile from town.
I picked a stick up off the ground
And knocked that fair girl down.

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 30 September 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

i know that song too, timmy, but why are you posting those two stanzas??

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 September 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

woops never mind i just saw the convoy thread - you're posting stanzas of songs that share a word with thread titles.. OK!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 September 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Haw -- My sister lives in the OC now, so I'm afraid I can't avoid Hank Dayz even if I wanna!

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 30 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

lal @ "the OC"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 September 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

(haw)

the Pilot Light is showing all Hank's known tv footage tonight at 7! Should be neat. Also: Jambalaya outide the Urban.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 30 September 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

i am impressed by the market square marijuana/money laundering ring. some creative thinking there re: urban redevelopment.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...

so this new movie theatre

roxymuzak, Sunday, 26 August 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

never been to knoxville, but i grew up in nashville, and the proximity/similarity in names always endeared it to me.

congrats on the new theater?!

Surmounter, Sunday, 26 August 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, wait. You grew up in Nashville? Have you talked about that on ILX yet? I'd be curious to know what that was like.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 26 August 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

it's on gay street, right? seven screens or something?? there's been so much talk, for DECADES, about getting gay street on its feet again and this is the first thing that i feel like could make it a hub for a real cross-section of people to hang and congregate. like, thompson-boling arena style cross-sections. am i fooling myself again, the way i have promised myself not to in regards to all the promises made about the old city, year after year?

i went to sundown in the city this summer, and it was FANTASTIC. tons of teenagers, loads of oldies... very, very few black people or hispanics, however.

one sight that pleasantly shocked me - a sight i would have never seen growing up - was driving by the vestal baseball diamond and seeing a group of about 15 mexican looking guys plying soccer in the outfield.
