I am speechless. No. Cheesesteak requires cheese.

For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe it's just that cheez wiz is better than you're used to, but that hardly excuses it.

For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

You realize that it's very much authentic Philadelphia style to put Cheez Wiz on a cheesesteak, right?

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

As someone once said, giving the people what they want is one thing, but what about what they don't know that they want?

For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

But I was incorrect about the "wit" which refers to onions.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

Cheesesteaks elsewhere

In other parts of North America, many sandwich shops offer their own versions of the cheesesteak. However, according to Pennsylvania Governor and former Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell, cooks outside Philadelphia cannot produce an authentic Philly cheesesteak because, "first, they use good meat. You need the fattiest, stringiest meat to get a proper taste... The second mistake is, they use real cheese. Real cheese doesn't melt like Cheez Whiz... And third, when they fry their onions, they actually drain off the grease. You can't do that."[26]

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

Good god almighty, I never ever want an authentic cheesesteak. That makes "cheesesteak" sound on the level of "dirty sanchez."

For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

Your loss.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to stick a pea under your mattress to test a theory I have.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

jenny, i cried at fucking everything last night.

and then i thought i was done, and declared it so. no more crying.

i was laying in bed trying to sleep with my mind spinning at 2 am or so, and listening to city noise. some guy yelled out "YES WE CAN!" out of the relative quiet, and i cried again.

then i thought i was done. but i keep reading things today that get me misty all over again. ah well.

i've never had philly cheesesteak, but it sounds NASTY.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

also, i like that all my religious facebook friends are bemoaning the results of prop 8. they're the good kind of religious. :)

JuliaA, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

John, what was it like when you met Obama?

Well, it was a little rushed, but he seemed like a genuinely good guy, and he had a reassuring handshake.

Also, does Nasta have any new songs? I heard this song in Urban 0utf1tters just now on my lunch break that sounded exactly like Matt's voice but I've never heard the song before. Some line about taking someone's daughter to school..??

I guess they've been playing a couple new songs live lately, but they haven't recorded anything, so I doubt it was them. If they do record a new album, it will be kind of weird for me, because most of the songs will probably be songs I had something to do with writing.

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

Philly cheesesteaks are delicious - fuck the haterz.

You can get an authentic cheesesteak with either Cheese Wiz or provolone, although Philadelphia is a town rent asunder by debate over which is better and more authentic. Personally, I like them both equally, but in different ways. However, I am from Delaware, which is not Philadelphia, as much as we sometimes might like to pretend that it is.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

there is a good cheesesteak place on milwaukee between sacramento and fullerton, apparently it's run by actual philadelphians

good luck usa (dan m), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

truth: i have never eaten a philly cheesesteak, authentic or otherwise

La Lechera, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

i will forever battle against the importance of authenticity in food

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

it's the bane of my existence

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Ed Rendell is kind of a goober, too. The biggest obstacles that I personally have found in the way of a good Philly cheesesteak outside of Philadelphia are incorrect choice of bread (Amoroso's FTW) and an urge to expand the cheese selections beyond Wiz or provolone.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

don't forget tomatoes too nick

good luck usa (dan m), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

None of which is to say that a cheesesteak outside of these parameters is not good, just that it doesn't meet the definition of Philly cheesesteak. Call it something else, like "Delicious Non-regionally Affiliated Steak Sandwich."

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

how about "steak sandwich"

La Lechera, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

lol dan otm

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

how about "steak sandwich"

Too short.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

fauxlidelphia steak sandwich

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

Greasy

Onions
and
Cheese substance

good luck usa (dan m), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I second Fauxlidelphia.

I ONLY brought up authenticity b/c Kenan was acting like such a thing as Cheez Wiz on a cheese steak was unheard of an somehow a violation of all that is cheese steak.

The whole point is that - again, authentic or not - it's divine.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

Uh, the ONLY *reason I* brought up...

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

Guys, this is like arguing over what an authentic donut is. It's a fatty piece of shit that is engineered to taste good to the part of our brain that thinks it needs to fatten up for the winter.

For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

I will not argue about cheesteaks on the internet.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

gross
kenan eats donuts made of poops

La Lechera, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

xp yeah but is it real excrement or is it that processed crap

xxp damn it, joek too slow

good luck usa (dan m), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

Let's talk about something less controversial.

Personally, I believe there is no god.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

HA yes, high five

For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

you guys

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

crackin me up today

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Again, I am not now, nor have I today argued authenticity.

This reminds me of a Tim's sister who, when someone mentioned chocolate and bananas eaten together reacted as though she had heard "ice cream with sisal rope."

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

don't get me started on donuts. i discovered a newfound loathing of donuts yesterday. i will eat a pint of ben and jerry's if i want to augment my hips with insanely caloric foodstuffs. fuck a greasy, heavy donut.

i ate one and felt sick all afternoon.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

i'm glad someone besides myself is perpetuating the "i am not arguing about ___ on the internet" meme

And Tim's friend pointed out that a very well known choco/banana combo was a banana split. Her response: "Well, I don't like banana splits."

xp!

Krispy Kreme's are the answer to greasy heavy donuts (I'M LOOKING AT YOU FUCKING DUNKIN')

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Nick.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Krispy Kreme's are the answer to greasy heavy donuts

Uh huh. It's right there in the name, innit?

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

hey y'all.

if you want amusement, check out the results for the congressional races in chicago. jesse jackson jr. won by something like 89/11. bobby rush, 86/14. jan schakowsky, my mom's congresswoman, something like 77/23.

amateurist, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

she is my congressional rep too (schakowsky)
i voted for her

La Lechera, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

Used to be mine, too, but now I'm on Rahm's turf. Although perhaps not for long, if he accepts the CoS job.

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Luis Gutierrez got 80some% too IIRC.

I voted for the Green candidate b/c the dude showed up at our door one day. No I can't remember his name.

good luck usa (dan m), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a Jan fan, but she's not my rep. I'm in Rahm's district, too. My state reps are Cullerton and Feigenholtz, who retained their seats.

I was hoping that the greens might have won Water Reclamation District commissioner, but they did not.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

Oh I forgot to mention that I won tickets to that Swedish vampire movie for tomorrow night. Anyone want to see it with me? It starts at 7:00 at Landmark, but I'm probably going to get there at least 30-40 minutes early, because they always overbook these things.
