The more stuff that I think about that was brought up for the first time this season and left dangling (or at least unsatisfactorily unresolved), the more chagrined I am. I neither expected nor particularly wanted everything spelled out, but a lot of this shit was just sloppy.

& again last night was only the second time i'd seen lost, but that defense of the ending makes it seem like the most indefensible cop out of a final episode ever

so they never explained how jacob managed to get off the island to go touch everybody at significant moments in their lives. before i thought it was ~magic~, because he was ~like a god~, but it turns out he's just some dude? with no real knowledge or mystic understanding of what he's doing? and he created a bunch of complex rules for controlling the island that don't actually have a basis in fact, so when hurley takes over he can just, like, make up new rules?

also i guess allison janney wasn't the smoke monster, just a really strong woman who can move huge quantities of earth with her bare hands.

all i know about jacob is that he was WORST GUARDIAN EVER. he let dharma dudes drill holes into the heart of the island for years. why did he even let those guys ON the island in the first place?

Also, bullshit to all of the 'it's about the characters' nonsense. The characters have largely become annoying cyphers or lost what was once awesome about them (see: Ben). The show was increasingly plot-centric, to the point of turning most of the characters into little more than cogs in some big Rube Goldberg machine worked by Smokey, Widmore, et al over the last season. I remarked to someone sometime during s6 that I couldn't think of another show which I'd been so invested in and (with only a handful of exceptions) didn't really care what happened to the characters. I don't think the producers were terribly cognizant of their strengths or their weaknesses, which is why we got what we got.

I'm like grabbing my head in frustration about this "all about the characters" party line. If it's all about the characters, why did Sayid suddenly shift gears from loving Nadia more than anything to loving Shannon more than anything? Given that a hallmark of the entire series was that the characters did all sorts of ridiculous things without asking the kinds of questions that any normal person would ask, therefore making them cyphers motivation-wise and turning them into parodies, it just galls me to no end to hear this "all about the characters" defense.

Especially when I think about stuff like Desmond in the hatch, which was really freaking great.

You have to put it in perspective of how crazy the meetings must have been between the writers and producers. Pat "buzzwords" like "it's all about the characters" had to have been things chanted into infinity just to keep the show on the air.

UGH, The Wire. Why is it so hard to end good TV shows well? Rhetorical question, that.

I'm really reluctant to open this can o' worms, but Ron Moore et al used "it's all about the characters" as their excuse for the Battlestar series finale, too. So not only is it bullshit coming from Cuse and Lindleface, it's also not even original bullshit.

haven't seen the shield due to wire-fatigue. is it better than the wire? Does chiklis die choking on a hotdog? That was my idea for how to end the wire, but I guess it's more conceptually awesome than in practice.

Wire finale was not awesome, but if there was anything in there as egregious as 'lol kara was actually a ainjil' or 'they really in heavan together' I must have been tired and missed it?

I'm not trying to be That Guy, but if anybody is going to spoil the ending of the Wire (we're on episode five, season five!!!) could you put a spoiler alert in front of it?

X-post "Shield" finale is some poetic justice that perfectly sums up the gist of the show. One of those "even when you win you lose" sort of deals.

Man, if anything shows like "Lost" are all about characterture. They keep characters around because people like seeing them and the consistent way they act from ep to ep. Which is why the "let's get the gang back together" ending is such a cop out, as if viewers weren't intelligent or invested enough for something more challenging and complex rather than mawkish and sentimental (however effectively).

I mean, back to "The Shield," characters in that show made choices and suffered the consequences. They weren't pawns in a game someone else was playing. They were playing the game.

this was not as BAAAAAAAAD as battlestar but it was waaaaaaaay LAAAAAAAAAAAAMEr

re richard making it in the modern day world: not such a big deal. the modern world has come to the island many times over the years, and he's been out in it himself like when he did the buddha objects test thing with young locke. plus didn't he have some hospital/business type role back when they recruited juliet?

I just hope Breaking Bad ends up with everybody dead or in jail. If it turns out that Jesse is the eternal guardian of the magic meth lab and Walt is the final cylon, I'm going to start doing meth myself.

i think it'd be great and philosophically in keeping with the wire if all the elaborate and intense narratives turned on something as trivial as an overly zealous weener bite.

no that's what I mean -- its awesomeness is predicated on there being no resolution, which is a trick you can't pull if you've decided to have resolution of a sort. the awesomeness of desmond in a hatch is tied to its unresolved nature.

iirc McNulty and Freamon opened a Chesapeake Bay bed and breakfast, Daniels joined FBI Fringe Division, it turned out D'Angelo was just in witness protection the whole time, and Snoop's hair looked good.

I'm not going to let myself read all the posts since yesterday.

IMO, the downfall of Lost was when it stopped having cool mysteries and they focused more on the characters than the island. It's hard to go from all the cool time travel stuff and unexplained science to a season with very little of that and the reasons "we have to go back to the island" ended up being meh.

Plus the epic struggle of good verses evil was (a.) a fist fight with flocke (b.) moving a rock in a cave with wither red or yellow light!

There was some kinda teary-eyed type moments in the final but those moments were mostly just reunions and remembering the good old seasons type stuff. Having lots of those emo moments doesn't make up for the island being an uncool place this season.
