ugh haven't been out for a long run since weekend before last, feeling like i'm going backwards fast here.

now that the weather has been getting genuinely hot, i have come to the conclusion that my ideal longer distance running weather is about 40F; when it's 75 and up i just can't ever get comfortable once i get hot. good thing the new puppy is getting up at 5:30am. i guess?

yes. Jeff, Jesse and I did the 5k fun run yesterday and it was 80 degrees at 10 a.m. and most of the route was in direct sunlight and it was pretty miserable.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 May 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)
marketing it as the 5k miserable run would have been problematic

eek. the gym where i've been doing my training keep its temp set @ 76 degrees, b/c it is 'environmentally friendly' ... but since it is in a basement, it is also about 90% humidity, so long runs on the treadmill are inordinately grueling.
― ampersand (remy bean), Monday, 24 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)
geez, i'll be environmentally friendly at home. the gym should crank the a/c!
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 24 May 2010 14:02 (sixteen years ago)
i guess they get the membership fees whether or not people use the gym, so they don't care if people are comfortable?!
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 24 May 2010 14:03 (sixteen years ago)
yeah. it's a branch of the planet fitness franchise, and their whole deal-i-o is keeping things cheap. with $10 monthly fees, i can't really complain.
― ampersand (remy bean), Monday, 24 May 2010 14:06 (sixteen years ago)
and oh man, the pain problems in my right leg keep getting worse/morphing/whatever. i've had a pretty constant ache on the ball of my foot, which i assume is just aggravation of the nerves near the metatarsal cuneiform, but now i am getting a dull ache in my back/hip on the same side. this comes even while wearing a support brace on the right knee, and with new shoes. i'm not overtraining, either: i only run about 16 miles a week (4 days x 4 miles), with a day off in between each run. i'm beginning to think that a week off might be a good thing, but...?
Loving the heat. It can be a little life sucking, but feels so great after I've sweated it out for several miles.
― Jeff, Monday, 24 May 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
18k, 130 mins. it's 1am and i'm going to bed.

damn, son!
15 min into run tonight i got a horrible stitch and that made me really pissed off bc i had gone out to try to blow off steam and instead got crankier :(
― tehresa, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 00:49 (sixteen years ago)
oh that is the worst. i recommend buying the non runner's marathon trainer to help with the psych/pain game while running. it's made a huge difference in my ability to rise through bullshit brain-trying-to-kill me stuff.
― ampersand (remy bean), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 01:15 (sixteen years ago)
i have never had a stitch like that running before! i hadn't eaten in at least 2 hours! but i think my digestion's off lately. sigh. my 5k time is gonna be so bad on june 5 :( at the same time i keep thinking about half marathons...
― tehresa, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 01:16 (sixteen years ago)
I signed up today for the Chicago rock n roll half marathon on 8/1. Will do it instead of a 15 mile run that weekend.
I've been running sparingly before my 10 mile race on Saturday. While I haven't felt the acute knee pain that I had before, my knees definitely feel weak. Really sucks because I can't push myself like I normally do, I'm basically running not to get hurt. BORING.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 01:20 (sixteen years ago)
Hi ILX please to help me walk this AM

You can hobble about with pride I think. Well done lad!

PS sorry for neglecting this thread, I've not been running much at all recently. Still got a dodgy leg...

Cosign, this book is great for anyone even thinking of going this far.

My fiance and I officially signed up for the San Francisco Marathon over the weekend -- her first, my fourth, and we'll hopefully be running the entire race together on the final day of our honeymoon.
C/D?

As long as she doesn't slow you down.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 13:44 (sixteen years ago)
getting close to being able to cover the distance now, but am aware that my speedwork (ie 5k times etc) is lagging behind my stamina. what sort of mins/km would be a 'result' for the 1st half marathon of a fairly chubby dude heading near his 30's, iyo?
― May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Friday, 28 May 2010 16:34 (sixteen years ago)
4 to 4.5 hours
― Jeff, Friday, 28 May 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)
Use this calculator. Plug in a few of your better times for shorter distances, and see what you get back.

Wait, you said half. 1.90 to 2.25 hours.

hot damn that's a crushing adjustment

i am confused, i though americanese used hours and minutes like we did.

I'm on my mobile, too lazy to tap out the minutes.
― Jeff, Friday, 28 May 2010 16:56 (sixteen years ago)
ok will be aiming for something < 2 1/2 hours i think. below 7mins/km and see how i get on over the next few weeks.
― May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Friday, 28 May 2010 16:57 (sixteen years ago)
The most important thing (imo) is to be comfortable with the distance. If you've done 13 miles a number of times in training then you can be confident that even if you don't have a great day you'll still finish the course. Everything on top of that is bonus.
― seandalai, Saturday, 29 May 2010 01:26 (sixteen years ago)
yeah that's realy my attitude, but i still want to have some kind of a time target so's i'm not dawdling in the middle 10.

Ran the Soldier Field 10 Mile race today. Actually, that is a lie, I ran the first 4 miles, then walked the remaining 6. LOL/SOB/FAIL
Orthopedist appointment on Tuesday, should be fun!
― Jeff, Saturday, 29 May 2010 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

Blargh! First run in over a month, set out 6.15am, still too damn hot.
― ljubljana, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)
But will have to get on with it, as signed up for an 8k twilight run in early July. I'll be away for 2.5 weeks in the UK between now and then, so have to get disciplined about running away from home, too.
― ljubljana, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 11:56 (sixteen years ago)
At least the weather in the UK will be better...
― seandalai, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:03 (sixteen years ago)
Orthopedist appointment today. Cautiously optimistic. I can almost walk without a limp now!
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:12 (sixteen years ago)
So my official time for the 10 mile race was 2:09:16. That blazing time was good enough for 830/860 for my age group, 3557th place for men, and 7908th place overall. Splits:
1 – 8:222 – 8:283 – 9:33 (knee pain starts)4 – 10:51 (walking starts)5 – 14:286 – 15:017 – 15:478 – 15:36 (speeding up!)9 – 15:21 (zoooooom)10 – 15:29 (thumbs down)
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:14 (sixteen years ago)
I was feeling great at the start of the race too. If my needs didn't rebel against me, I'm sure I could have gotten between 1:25 and 1:30.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:15 (sixteen years ago)
needs = knees? haha
i have been running a lot with carl (my dog) and today i went out by myself and (sorry carl) it was wonderful. kinda hard to zone out with a dog to look out for. i've been doing pretty well lately.

seriously, jeff. i'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you wanted it to, but you kept going. that's a lot of tenacity right there.

I'm very stubborn, it's one of my best qualities as a runner.
Doc today said no damage to my knees, it's just the ITB. Physical therapy 3x a week and I can start marathon training on time. Relief.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 14:44 (sixteen years ago)
yay!
