My first misty moment was when I heard that they called the election, and I heard it from Jon Stewart. Only the second time I have even gotten misty during Jon Stewart, the first time being after 9/11, when it was more than just misty.
My second time getting misty was after Obama's speech, when Michelle hugged him and said "I love you" in his ear. That still kinda gets me, just thinking about it. Especially after reading his last book (there will be more, you betcha), where he was talking about his family, and the insane schedule he had to keep just to get the Senate seat, and the strain that it put on his family. And the way he said during the campaign (probably truthfully) that Michelle put her foot down: he can only run this once. But goddamnit HE DID IT. That's what stuck in my throat. The sense of pride and relief and HOPE has to got to be 100x for that woman than for any of us.

Is there a cabinet speculation thread? I'm really interested to see who he picks for various positions.

Also, how about that Anita Alvarez, huh?
I haven't even looked to see how my local races went since everybody in my district except for Water Reclamation Commissioner ran as an unopposed democrat.

The nerd in me was analyzing the positioning of the stage, seemed a little strange at first that it was turned to one side, but I figured it was probably intended to give a better TV picture and nothing more.

I felt something like patriotism last night. It felt funny and kind of good. I'm sort of feeling proud to be an American.
But when the crowd started chanting "USA" I tried and quickly realized that I wasn't quite ready for that jelly.
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
I've been feeling a good bit of patriotism lately. Having friends in foreign countries helps.
― For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)
It's possible to be a patriot without buying into the stupid side of it imo

I meant to say "other countries" but it's hard to shake my non-flat-world thinking

Local shopping: today everyone wanted to chat about the result, especially the Bangladeshi guys who run the off-license/overpriced awful food shop where I bought the full set of newspapers not owned by Rupert Murdoch.
xp The dress would have looked much better if that red fadey bit didn't go all geometric fake belt/weirdo bad seamcraft at the waistline (that kind of thing can look cheap). Better for there to be a straight red fade interrupted by an actual wide cinch belt. We know she rocked the Alaïa belt and it would look good with last night's dress. She is so cool and so toned, wrong clothes appear to wear her and this is one of them.

It's great how "Peace of Mind" is so totally hippie, lyric-wise. "Ambition is evil!" Zen monks would agree.

Amanda, Good job with Ohio.
John, what was it like when you met Obama? Also, does Nasta have any new songs? I heard this song in Urban 0utf1tters just now on my lunch break that sounded exactly like Matt's voice but I've never heard the song before. Some line about taking someone's daughter to school..??

You know something? The absolute best choice for a cheesesteak topping is Cheez Wiz (aka "wit").
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
I am speechless. No. Cheesesteak requires cheese.
― For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe it's just that cheez wiz is better than you're used to, but that hardly excuses it.
― For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
You realize that it's very much authentic Philadelphia style to put Cheez Wiz on a cheesesteak, right?
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
As someone once said, giving the people what they want is one thing, but what about what they don't know that they want?
― For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
But I was incorrect about the "wit" which refers to onions.
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
Cheesesteaks elsewhere
In other parts of North America, many sandwich shops offer their own versions of the cheesesteak. However, according to Pennsylvania Governor and former Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell, cooks outside Philadelphia cannot produce an authentic Philly cheesesteak because, "first, they use good meat. You need the fattiest, stringiest meat to get a proper taste... The second mistake is, they use real cheese. Real cheese doesn't melt like Cheez Whiz... And third, when they fry their onions, they actually drain off the grease. You can't do that."[26]
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)
Good god almighty, I never ever want an authentic cheesesteak. That makes "cheesesteak" sound on the level of "dirty sanchez."

I'm going to stick a pea under your mattress to test a theory I have.
jenny, i cried at fucking everything last night.
and then i thought i was done, and declared it so. no more crying.
i was laying in bed trying to sleep with my mind spinning at 2 am or so, and listening to city noise. some guy yelled out "YES WE CAN!" out of the relative quiet, and i cried again.
then i thought i was done. but i keep reading things today that get me misty all over again. ah well.
i've never had philly cheesesteak, but it sounds NASTY.
