The food drops. Stay with us!!!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

What Smokey is, was my assumption.

At least wait until the series is over before complaining they've dicked us over for answers.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

all will be explained in the books

"parts of it are about as narratively sound as Lost."

Lost very smartly waits till last season for the origin story. Bible fucks it up in season one. Also, Bible never explains where the Others come from.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

Admittedly virtually every answer we've been given so far this year has been k-lame but you never know, we might get lucky against all logic.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

I think that the Bible holds together way better narratively than Lost, and the writers probably were paid a lot worse too.

there are lots of different versions of the bible

it's all in our hands what 'lost' is

maybe we should begin to decide which scenes from lost are actually 'canon'

long time listener, first time balla (history mayne), Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

probably would read Lost graphic novel - for better dialogue

I bet they could drown the smoke monster

Dan I., Friday, 21 May 2010 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

seems he came out of water tho. maybe he has to be chucked back into the same cave (sure why not).

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2010 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

maybe he goes back into the cave and animals eat rope

If MIB is actually the good one, then it could be an inversion of the bible scenario: an angel has to fight Jacob to get across the water.

Is it far? Is it far? Is it far? (Jon Lewis), Friday, 21 May 2010 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, so now it really doesn't make sense. Smokey brought them all back, including dead Locke, so he could kill Jacob and then kill all of them so he can leave? Why didn't Smokey just con someone in the others camp or even Rose or Bernard?

Smokey: Kill this guy and you'll be left alone forever.
Rose: Alright.

Nah, this doesn't wash. Killing Jacob hinged on getting access to him in the first place, which no one except Richard had managed to do. Smokey needed to first convince the Others that Locke was their future leader, and then pose as Locke in order to get Ben anywhere near Jacob in the first place.

billions of other things...they had four seasons and knew when the show was ending and they pissed half it against the wall making up bullshit WAU moments that never actually led anywhere or made any sense and ultimately all contradicted each other. this generated excitement but they've conclusively failed to prove they ever had any fucking idea of or plan for most of the main plotlines of the entire six seasons.

I actually think the Locke story is proof they had worked out at least a significant proportion of it.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 May 2010 09:45 (sixteen years ago)

tbrr i've forgotten too much at this point. i don't remember any of this business about smokey fooling the others that locke was their future leader!

kinda doubt that they knew what smokey was when the show began. wonder at what point they decided.

long time listener, first time balla (history mayne), Friday, 21 May 2010 09:48 (sixteen years ago)

The Hurley situation has started bugging me. Jacob was like "you were all flawed before you came here"...but what was Hurley's problem? He was nuts, because he was driven nuts by bad luck, bad luck that followed on from his lottery win, a win he got using JACOB'S NUMBERS. So he was only screwed up because Jacob screwed him up - why wouldn't he go "dude, wait..." at the campfire?? On the one hand they keep saying "we want to keep it character driven", but then they completely forget the motivations and histories of individual characters.

Hurley should also have said something like "hey, those six numbers you sent to fuck me up with also turned out to be the numbers of the last six candidates, and you knew those numbers ages ago, so why did you even bring everyone else here?".

Sure, this could be explained by something like "the island made the numbers, not jacob", but then we're in "the island brings people in, not jacob" territory, which kinda contradicts what jacob's been saying.

JimD, Friday, 21 May 2010 09:54 (sixteen years ago)

i guess - you could argue that Hurley had unresolved daddy/self-esteem/psychological issues before he hit the jackpot. what lead to him being in santa rosa originally was feeling responsible for killing two people by via a collapsed deck accident

also "across the sea" made it clear that the island is drawing people to it regardless of whatever the protector does or wants

Nhex, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:04 (sixteen years ago)

It's a convoluted self-fulfilling prophecy which involves Smokey, Locke and Richard. It falls down a bit when you consider how it possibly started in the first place, like virtually all time travel fiction does, and where the hell the compass came from. This bit of the last thread outlines it quite well.

kinda doubt that they knew what smokey was when the show began. wonder at what point they decided

Yeah I'd go with this, I think I preferred it when everyone thought Smokey was just a security system. I think maybe their ideas changed midway through S3 or 4?

Yeah I think at some point next episode either Sawyer or Hurley is going to twig this. Mostly their lives in the alt-timeline are much better. Jacob's been a massive dick to all of them.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:07 (sixteen years ago)

..but what was Hurley's problem? He was nuts, because he was driven nuts by bad luck, bad luck that followed on from his lottery win, a win he got using JACOB'S NUMBERS.

IIRC Hurley first heard those numbers when he was already in a mental hospital, so he had some problems pre-Jacob.

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:10 (sixteen years ago)

The Numbers were first featured prominently in the Season 1 episode "Numbers" as the winning lottery numbers that made Hurley a multi-millionaire. He first heard them from Leonard at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute, who originally heard them with Sam Toomey on a radio transmission when they were stationed at a listening post in the Pacific with the Navy.

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:11 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah, forgot about that.

JimD, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:14 (sixteen years ago)

The thing I found funny about Jacob crossing Kate off because she became a mommy is that he obv. didn't care about Aaron being "raised by another."

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:38 (sixteen years ago)

it would be funny if they just completely forgot about Claire on the island in the finale, just like the characters have.

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2010 10:48 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^btw this is why i think she might end up being the new MiB

jack/claire are SIBLINGS and one is BORING AND GOOD and the other is CRAZY AND BAD BUT W/LEGIT GRUDGE

gbx, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:54 (sixteen years ago)

good one

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

true indeed

long time listener, first time balla (history mayne), Friday, 21 May 2010 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

As far as I can tell, Claire has been a 100% pointless presence this series. Can't blame them for forgetting about her.

Xpost oh god Claire turning into Smokey would just about be the lamest thing ever. I wouldn't be able to take her seriously as a threat even if she turned into a billowing cloud of black smoke and smashed me repatedly against a tree.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:56 (sixteen years ago)

there must be a reason they haven't killed her yet

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:57 (sixteen years ago)

omg u guys its totally gonna happen

gbx, Friday, 21 May 2010 10:59 (sixteen years ago)

srsly, it's a great call

long time listener, first time balla (history mayne), Friday, 21 May 2010 11:02 (sixteen years ago)

I hope Claire kills Kate & angry Jack throws her down the light river.

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 11:08 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe the final shot will be Jacob and original MIB sitting on the yacht, drinking cocktails with umbrellas in them, while sailing away from the island and going "suckers", as Jack and Claire fight with each other for all eternity.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 May 2010 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

forgot about the numbers

conrad, Friday, 21 May 2010 11:14 (sixteen years ago)

There's a chance Sawyer will become the new Jacob or MIB--given that like the two of them he took revenge on the person responsible for his mother's death. (Though likely there was never any point to all the father-killing/mother-avenging stuff other than thematic business.)

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

woah so many posts

that episode was decent

- i'm glad they killed widmore because i never cared about the ben vs widmore fighting for control of the island storyline but i can understand how the people who did would be seriously pissed about this
- it doesn't make sense that jacob brought everyone to the island because they were flawed. plenty of the ppl brought to the island are no more flawed than yr average person.
- i personally wish they had stayed with the time loop stuff to wrap up the show rather than introducing the jacob/mib plot for the final season but i understand its not my show and everyone has their own opinion on this
- glad to see ben back on form (what a waste this season!) serves as a reminder that actually this show has been held together by a very small number of excellent characters (ben,locke,desmond.....?) amongst a whole load of useless characters (+actors)

i absolutely agree that they have a huge curveball planned for the final episode. if they don't i will be severely disappointed. thinking back to the older mysteries of the show does make me angry but it was still entertaining. i would have more sympathy with the writers had this series not been so bad basically.

could juliet be the mysterious mother of jack's son? we haven't seen her in the alt yet right?

pollos da don (tpp), Friday, 21 May 2010 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

maybe alt-clairemonster is sneaking into alt-jack's bedroom at night and cutting his neck

pollos da don (tpp), Friday, 21 May 2010 11:45 (sixteen years ago)

hearing her voice over breakfast would be enough to make my neck start bleeding

conrad, Friday, 21 May 2010 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

MOY BAGEL

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

gbx is going to be right and I'm going to have wasted six years of my life.

JimD, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

not gonna happen. they have to bring claire's dead body back to the island first and why the hell would mib want to be claire in the first place

sonderangerbot, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:53 (sixteen years ago)

If the final scene is a split-screen of Claire holding up Jack's severed head to the camera in both realities then wasting the last 6 years of our lives will have been worth it.

President Keyes, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:55 (sixteen years ago)

I guess once the series ends, this development could herald the rise of Lost-themed slash fiction.
