Also it takes Zoe all of 40 seconds to get to the outriggers and radio Widmore, who tells her to 'get back as soon as you can'. Then after she gets back they spend about 5 mins talking about walkie talkies.

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 20 May 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

Ben shooting Widmore should really result in Ben dying/sacrificing himself too

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2010 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

Ditto for Ben killing Jacob, really.

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 20 May 2010 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

thought this ep was okay, relatively at least.

anyone else seeing locke walking again in the alt having some monumental "he can let go" smokey is destroyed significance in the real one? feels like the kind of dumb shit they'll do.

there are so many cringeworthy lines of dialogue now it's hardly worth mentioning except to point out how lazy the writing has got. eg jacob explains the entire reason he brought them all to the island in 2/3 mins...and sawyer says "why did your mistake have to bring me to this goddamn rock?"

it's like a videogame where one character is like "stubborn angry dude" another is "sensitive love interest" etc, and after big weighty dialogues they each chip in with one liners.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

what's he supposed to say? "I'ma gonna kill you, smokles. But first, I gotta listen to more Iggy and cry some more"

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

actually, maybe Sawyer ought to have asked Jacob to clear up the rules re: Smokey killing the candidates directly instead of asking Jack, but that would prompt the story to give up some info the writers don't want to reveal yet?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

they will never discuss anything regarding the rules

cutty, Thursday, 20 May 2010 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

he could have asked him about a zillion questions.

can't believe we're basically not going to find out in any way whatsoever what smoke monster is.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

not that I'm thrilled about the light or the Smokey origin story as is, but I don't really know what else you were expecting. something super literal or hard-sciencey like it's the smoke from some burning body come to life or a Wizard of Oz style illusion/smokescreen (no pun intended)? I mean we can bitch about the cheesy 'magic' explanations but what non-mystical backstory for a giant smoke monster could there be?

some dude, Thursday, 20 May 2010 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

The ticking clock noises suggest biomechanical alien.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

something at all is all i was expecting, like what is he or why does he do what he does, it's not even clear why he kills people or why he would be evil

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

remember he got put in a black blanket just after he was born

conrad, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

and he cried a lot more than his twin brother -- i know from experience that if a baby cries it's usually evil

some dude, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

they should have had tiny black and white cowboy hats for the babies

Fists all gnarly and dick-dented (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

I mean we can bitch about the cheesy 'magic' explanations but what non-mystical backstory for a giant smoke monster could there be?

Did they show the smoke monster last season in the 1950s time where Daniel got shot? Alternative Smokey origin could have been weirdy quantum physicist being killed by his own mother during a time travel experiment, explaining the island's daddy issues and the shock twist being that Smokey hasn't been around as long as the island has been and was caused by the Losties' own doing.

Of course this season's Alpert episode shows Smokey killing dudes during the Black Rock time, but whatevs. Stupid alternative theory it took me two minutes to come up with and I like it more than the golden gloryhole from last week.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

you'd think it'd be hard to do worse than the writers. you'd think so.

xp They had six years vs my two minutes.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

"Alternative Smokey origin could have been weirdy quantum physicist being killed by his own mother during a time travel experiment"
You're gonna have to explain how this leads to Smokey.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

Time travel, I guess.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

One of my favourite smokey moments is when he got Richard Alpert then the next scene showed Fake Locke walking out from behind a house, probably straightening his shirt or something, just like when Superman turns back into Clark Kent.

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

this is LOST, no one has to explain anything ever xxpost

Fists all gnarly and dick-dented (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

I get the feeling they're withholding any transformation scenes until the finale because there's something vital revealed by them, not that they are too tasteful to show it, because man this show is not ashamed about flaunting bad CG at you!

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

smokey's creation could have easily been linked to the electromagnetism. duhr.

cutty, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

they did link it, didn't they?
the light thing that made smokey is the same thing that desmond has to press the button to keep from exploding, but it didn't kill him when it did explode because he's immune to it (and therefore immune to smokey? but not so immune that he can't get shoved down wells)

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

One of my favourite smokey moments is when he got Richard Alpert then the next scene showed Fake Locke walking out from behind a house, probably straightening his shirt or something, just like when Superman turns back into Clark Kent.

I'm kinda ashamed to admit that I actually spent about 30 seconds thinking about how when he transforms back into Flocke he's still carrying objects and figured Smokey just did a kind of loop and finished back where he was when he downed weapons to transform.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

well i'm guessing the way to "kill" smokey is to get him into something like that mega magnet chamber desmond got trapped in?

gbx, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

why does he do what he does, it's not even clear why he kills people

because if he doesn't kill them he can't leave

dmr, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

If Smokey can assume the form of a human body, couldn't he also assume the form of clothes, knives, backpacks, etc. that go along with one? Not really much to think about here.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

he's "stuck" in that form, apparently. So he needs a smoke-satchell the carry the rest of his non-form junk. He probably is getting dressed behind those houses!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'm just saying he assumes the form of the figure completely. He was wearing MiB's rag clothes, even though MiB's corpse was still clothed.

Although, now that I think about it, Locke was wearing a full suit in the coffin, but Smokey is dressed like "island" Locke. So who the fuck knows.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

There was no explanation for why the Oceanic 6 had to bring Dead Locke back to island when they returned, was there?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

Just that they all had to make the trip together.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

body had to be on the island for MIB to take it's form, just like with jack's dad.

Aerosol, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

So was it Smokey or Jacob working through Eloise that brought them back?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

Probably Smokey, given how Jacob is all, "if you don't want to be candidate, that's cool and all, I'll just get some more losers up in this crib."

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, so now it really doesn't make sense. Smokey brought them all back, including dead Locke, so he could kill Jacob and then kill all of them so he can leave? Why didn't Smokey just con someone in the others camp or even Rose or Bernard?

Smokey: Kill this guy and you'll be left alone forever.
Rose: Alright.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

ya didnt smokey basically manipulate everyone via ben

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

i was gonna say that but didn't smokey say something about locke's body being conveniently on the island etc, as if he had nothing to do with it.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

There's no credible way they can explain a big cloud of angry black smoke that kills people. There never has been. From the second it appeared it was obvious this was going to be mystical bollocks from then on in, I can't believe people are only just getting annoyed about it now.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

^YES!

Blancminaj (Spinspin Sugah), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

So why is Smokey stuck in that form now? Because Jacob's finally dead? That doesn't make sense, if all it takes to replace Jacob is drinking to magical creek water.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

"mystical bollocks" can be done right

cutty, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

epic fail here

cutty, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah exactly...nobody's looking for exact science, it's not even "mystical bollocks", they haven't actually even tried to explain anything whatsoever, they said "he went into a cave and came out a smoke monster that then wanted to kill everyone"

ffs raise your standards

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:55 (sixteen years ago)

the stuff with him taking over locke's body etc was quite cool, as was all the smokey stuff up until this series, hence the disappointment. if it was bound to be shit it'd have been shit the instant he was introduced. you'd swear any non scientifically logical storyline in history was by nature bound to be as shit as "he went into a cave and came out as some smoke that kills people"

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

"he went into a cave and came out a smoke monster that then wanted to kill everyone"

im ok with this

but i would have liked to know more, espesh about what the consequences are of it escaping

and why jacob chose these six people in particular, how he was able to know who to touch

and some other things

long time listener, first time balla (history mayne), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

billions of other things...they had four seasons and knew when the show was ending and they pissed half it against the wall making up bullshit WAU moments that never actually led anywhere or made any sense and ultimately all contradicted each other. this generated excitement but they've conclusively failed to prove they ever had any fucking idea of or plan for most of the main plotlines of the entire six seasons.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

But... THE SKELETONS!
