Well... that may work, also!
Just be prepared to utilize a hefty run/walk strategy, and not focus on yr finishing time.

Yes, but you're going to finish in good shape. No complaints 'til it's over!

i started to map my regular routes and it turns out that my long route is 4.5 miles. that's far! (for me) this summer my goal is to run 8 miles.

My current injury is weird. It only hurts when I run. Just walking around today, I feel no pain at all. I know it's lurking though. Ready to rear its ugly head a mile into my next run.
I got an orthopedist appointment for the beginning of June, just to check every thing out. This guy is seriously a rockstar ortho. He was the team doctor for the Chicago bulls.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:19 (sixteen years ago)
Watch out La Lechera, it starts out as measuring routes, but it is a slippery slope to full on run tracking.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:22 (sixteen years ago)
it was sorta fun. i need to get a little better before i start measuring too much though. i discourage easily.

hey, should we form an ilxor dailymile group? i'd be in...
today i've got an injury that is perfectly described on the runnersworld forum:
often times, when we have a pain while active, we thing we must have injured or strained a tendon, but there are some superficial nerves that run along the top of the food, some of which can become impinged by pressure from the laces. Even if you lace relatively loosely, when you increase intensity and push off harder, thus bending your foot and shoe more, the top of the shoe presses harder on the top of your foot. Feet also swell a little while running, which may contribute.
There is a prominent superficial nerve that runs right over the top of the first metatarsal cuneiform joint (which leads out to the big toe). Pressure and/or rubbing over this nerve can cause it to become inflamed and to swell. At it's worst, it is downright painful, but often not at first when you start running, and often the pain goes away a couple of miles after it starts up, then returns after your run and is sensitive to pressure. If you pay close attention to the pain when you press on it, it usually radiates down along the metatarsal between the top and ball of the foot and may feel vaguely like a 'funny bone' in your foot (not very funny, after all).

still trying to figure out how to "share" thingsi will admit that it's sort of fun to know how far i went, etc. what i don't want is for my jogging to be broadcast to the entire world. can i make the whole thing visible to "friends only"?

Not sure there's a privacy option. Then again, who besides your friends is really going to be snooping around your Dailymile account, of all things?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:18 (sixteen years ago)
i'm a very private person! you're right, though. still, i get really grossed out at the idea of someone stumbling across me there the same way that i'm horrified at the thought of seeing a former student while running. if i know you, don't watch me exercise!
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
dailymile is pretty easy to use though, so i can see myself logging stuff and charting various routes, etc.
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:32 (sixteen years ago)
I log for each run -- title (easy, long, recovery, tempo, etc.), distance, time, mood, comments, date, shoes, calories, effort and weather. Don't bother mapping my routes, though. Takes me about 1 minute to log each run.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:39 (sixteen years ago)
i would have to map for distance because otherwise i have no idea how far i went. please do not come to my neighborhood and kill me.
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

I need an awesome action shot of me running for my dailymile pic. Every one that I have, my mid section looks like an inner tube. So I just have one of me using my cat to dry off after a run.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)
i have three friends now!will try gmap tomorrow. i expect to be increasing the frequency and length of my excursions over the summer. so hey, why not go all the way.

is there a way to connect that to runkeeper? I don't really want to start a new account from scratch
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 20 May 2010 12:15 (sixteen years ago)
Probably not unless you can export gpx files from run keeper.
― Jeff, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:24 (sixteen years ago)
From looking at the dailymile forums, looks like runkeeper sync may happen in the future.
― Jeff, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:33 (sixteen years ago)
I do a whole lot of syncing. I haven't found that perfect solution yet. Sites/programs that I sync to after each run:
Dailymile - mainly for the social aspect. I've made some pretty good friends on there and everyone is like insanely nice. Lots of unconditional support no matter how slow you are.
Ascent Activity Tracker - native mac application. I like it because it gives me lots of stats and access to the raw gps data, which I'll use someday for something. I also track my equipment in here. No web component though.
Ascent iPhone app - syncs with the ascent desktop app. I like it just so I can have my running history in my pocket.
RunningAhead.com - my favorite website to sync to. Gives me lots of stats and a nice dashboard. Also like how I can generate reports and charts.
Garmin Connect website - don't really use it, but I sync with it anyway. May drop it soon.
Garmin Training Center - native desktop app. The program sort of sucks, but the one thing it is good at is exporting your data. So whenever I sign up for a new website or get a new program, I export my data from training center.

All that may seem tedious, but it's like my main hobby, so it's quite enjoyable.
― Jeff, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:46 (sixteen years ago)
I'm doing a lot of foam rolling these days.
― Jeff, Saturday, 22 May 2010 01:48 (sixteen years ago)
Yikes - what do you get out of all that in the end? I just write a mileage estimate in my diary and use Gmaps-Pedometer to plan my long runs. Not sure charts etc. would help me run faster.
― seandalai, Saturday, 22 May 2010 02:46 (sixteen years ago)
Probably not much at this point, but it is all so much fun.

now that the weather has been getting genuinely hot, i have come to the conclusion that my ideal longer distance running weather is about 40F; when it's 75 and up i just can't ever get comfortable once i get hot. good thing the new puppy is getting up at 5:30am. i guess?
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 24 May 2010 13:40 (sixteen years ago)
yes. Jeff, Jesse and I did the 5k fun run yesterday and it was 80 degrees at 10 a.m. and most of the route was in direct sunlight and it was pretty miserable.
