Oh god I almost screamed out loud at that picture of the coconut crab on the bin. I will continue checking this thread out of some bizarre compulsion I don't understand.

Oh I forgot to mention another thing about Naked Mole Rats: in addition to being hideous, unusually long-lived feces-eating monsters that feel no pain, they also are to known to reproduce primarily through inbreeding.

(latebloomer) (latebloomer), Monday, 17 May 2010 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

They are so fucking awesome.

The so-called ghost slug first appeared in South Wales gardens in 2006, possibly after arriving as a stowaway in imported potted plants.

The nocturnal predator is armed with blade-like teeth (see inset) for slicing through animal flesh and can measure up to 5 inches (13 centimeters) long when stalking its prey.

They engulf worms piece by piece. One end of the worm will still be alive while the other is being gradually ratcheted into the slug by the teeth.

OMG at the naked mole rat fun facts. I had no idea!

Star nosed mole would have been the first thing to come to mind for me. They're even worse when you see them moving. *shudder*

Have we forgotten the tongue eating isopod?

ps - Harbl, it IS NOT cute. ;)

11) that fish that swims up your penis and sticks out its barbed fins

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

omg i hadn't even scrolled down far enough to read that before thinking "so cute" xpost

Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

LOL I swear I remember you thinking that it was cute when we posted about it last year or something. :-)

Jimmy Mod - was going to post penis parasite fish but apparently that may be a myth?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candiru

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

awwwww, the widdle isopod looks like he's hugging the fish's tongue. except he's not hugging it, he's hanging onto what's left of the tongue after he ripped it to shreds with his razor-sharp claws. but it looks like he's hugging the fish's tongue, awwwww.

i just like its little face, and the front legs

Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

its face looks just like a guinea pig's face, only pickled.

not having a luxury watch is terrible (unregistered), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:32 (sixteen years ago)

OK its face and legs are sorta cute but the whole ripping out the tongue thing negates that for me I guess.

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:32 (sixteen years ago)

one man's meat is another man's parasitic, tongue-shredding crustacean, eh

not having a luxury watch is terrible (unregistered), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

That coconut crab thing is some next-level skin-crawling shit. Did someone post that on a spider thread before or did I imagine that?

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

OK so somehow while looking for more ideas for this thread I just wound up looking at tons of pics of Peruvian guinea pig meals. They serve the suckers up whole legs and tails and all! O_O

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

x-post - Yes, it was on a poll about which spider was the scariest even though it's not a spider but a crab. It was on that thread that I learned they hang out in trees and sometimes DROP FROM THE TREES AND LAND ON PPL'S HEADS. omg.

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - how cruel! how disgusting! how barbaric!

are the guinea pigs pickled, perchance?

not having a luxury watch is terrible (unregistered), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

there is an img macro of that coconut crab going IS THIS THE OCEAN and i love it but i can't find it

Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

Guinea pigs not pickled lol. Look sorta roasted. It's not really people eating them that was gross just seeing them charred and whole was kinda surprising.

Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

umm one of the "view image results" hits if you google the coconut crab involves one climbing up a guy's bare chest

for a second that felt gross, and then it started seeming like if you can just let them hang out on your bare chest, they must be pretty cool crabs

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

WAIT, i take it back, he is holding it suspended NEAR his bare chest, duh

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

urgh, those photos of guinea pigs laid out like roasted pigs, with little red peppers in their mouths, are waaaay over-the-top, even for jaded old me.

Aimless, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 01:16 (sixteen years ago)

I think parasites that prey on humans sorta belong in their own category. ordinary bedbugs and ticks scare me way more than any fancy egg-backed toads or tongue-eating crabs. at a distance, even the most monstrous animals can seem almost cute, but the moment a living thing burrows into my body, it shuts off the part of my brain that goes "awwwwwwwwww."

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Friday, 17 June 2011 11:25 (fourteen years ago)

That is a tarantula hawk.

The tarantula hawk is relatively docile and rarely stings without provocation. However the sting, particularly of Pepsis formosa, is among the most painful of any insect, though the intense pain only lasts for about 3 minutes.[3] Commenting on his own experience, one researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations."[2] In terms of scale, the wasp's sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, second only to that of the bullet ant and is described by Schmidt as "blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric".[4]

Schmidt Sting Pain Index!

Oh, duh, cozen identified it in the original post.

Jesse, Friday, 17 June 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt_Sting_Pain_Index

Is this index a joke?

1.8 Bullhorn acacia ant: A rare, piercing, elevated sort of pain. Someone has fired a staple into your cheek.

2.0 Bald-faced hornet: Rich, hearty, slightly crunchy. Similar to getting your hand mashed in a revolving door.

2.0 Yellowjacket: Hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.

3.0 Paper wasp: Caustic and burning. Distinctly bitter aftertaste. Like spilling a beaker of hydrochloric acid on a paper cut.
