Bribery probe vs former Ukrainian leader reopened

(AP)

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukrainian prosecutors say they are reopening a bribery investigation involving former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko that was suspended in 2005.

Tymoshenko helped spearhead the Orange Revolution that brought the Western-leaning Viktor Yushchenko to the presidency in 2005. She became his first prime minister.

Thereafter, prosecutors ceased investigating whether she had tried to bribe a judge to end court proceedings against a former associate from the now-defunct Unified Energy Systems.

Tymoshenko headed the company before becoming deputy prime minister in 1999.

Prosecutors said Wednesday the case against her has been reopened, and Tymoshenko, who lost to Viktor Yanukovych in this year's presidential race, said the move is politically motivated.

I have at least three Yulia t-shirts lying around somewhere. She's fascinating and repellent in almost equal measure.

Unless, of course, she's done something horrific. Then maybe would not wear. Didn't read the article.

it sounds nakedly political

full on... mask hysteria (history mayne), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

It's political, but she's probably guilty as charged. Also guilty of stealing $10bn in gas before entering politics, but that's not mentioned much these days.

On the other hand, Yanukovich is allegedly a convicted rapist so nobody comes out of this looking too shiny.

One of my friends here at work is an American but grew up in Ukraine and her dad still lives there so I just went and asked her. This is what I got in about 4 mins.

She's anti-socialism.
She bribed her way into office.
Generally well liked.
Pushes heavily for a return to traditional Ukrainian identity and is pro-isolationism.
The awesome hairdo is based on traditional styles and probably ties into the above.

her party was called "fatherland" and is now just named after her which is bad vibes imo

5ish finkel (goole), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

thx for asking your friend!

5ish finkel (goole), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

ha np

I ask her stuff about Ukraine all the time - I find it really interesting especially hearing about what I was like growing up as an American there (pretty boring apparently!). She's going to teach me how to make Russian baked things. Oh this is funny - she's fluent in Russian but I think I'm the only one who knows that. We have about 5 Russian scientists who talk to one another only in Russian and she eavesdrops all the time. She is a valuable resource tbh.

allegedly convicted?

He did jail time for something but there are questions over exactly what it was. He claims it was assault, other people say it was rape. the records have mysteriously vanished so it's impossible to prove either way. He's a thug, though.

She's anti-socialism, for sure. She's very popular in the nationalist West of the country and has pockets of support in Kyiv and other places but is loathed in the East and South where most of the people are Russian-speaking - a language she claims to no longer understand. She's pro-EU and anti Russian influence.

As with most Ukrainian politicians though, the policies are entirely secondary to the influence of her backers. She represents business interests in the West, Yanukovich represents business interests in the East. Everyone else is an afterthought.

I didn't know anything about this. I'm really shocked - the charges seem to be exceeding powers and signing a bad deal i.e. anywhere else that's a political matter. Seven years, crikey.

She deserves to be in jail. Not 100% sure she deserves to be in jail for this.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 10:30 (fourteen years ago)

What's the backstory here? I've not been paying attention recently - was assuming Ukraine's been muddling along like something approaching a normal country.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

Ukraine's never been a normal country. The competing factions are less interested in policy or national identity (Russian vs Ukrainian) than protecting the interests of their dodgy business contacts, Yulia in the West, Yanukovich in the East. One guy ran on a platform of 'i'm so rich i don't need to be corrupt!' a few years ago but didn't get far. All the key politicians are enormously corrupt and the economy has stagnated as they bicker.

Yulia's billions were built on the back of (literally) stealing gas from Russia so it's always been a sensitive policy area for her, particularly when her role was negotiating treaties with companies across the border.

She may be stylish, and I love her for that, but she's just another European far-right kleptocrat, anf the Ukraine is better off without her. Except for her prettiness/stylishness.

British rocker and biker Sean Carr has denied reports that he plans to divorce Yevheniya Carr, the daughter of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the Segodnya newspaper wrote on Wednesday.

"This is nonsense. We're not getting divorced," the newspaper quoted Carr as saying.

Earlier, the 1+1 TV Channel, citing its own sources, reported that the couple's marriage could fall apart.

According to the channel, Yevheniya Carr no longer lives with the 43-year-old leader of the British band Death Valley Screamers, although on Oct. 1, they were expected to mark the sixth anniversary of their marriage.

The court sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison on abuse of power charges in signing a gas contract with Russia in 2009.

Sean Carr earlier came to Lukyanivska jail on a motorbike to support Tymoshenko and attended several court sessions.

The message is pretty stark - either free Tymoshenko or have your access to the Crocs store hampered for the forseeable future.

They have a decent little camp of 30-40 people set up on Kreschatik with lots of anti-Yanukovich propaganda but it's not going to cause anyone in government sleepless nights.

I was at the same university as Yevhenia at the same time (i think) but never ran into her. Might have been interesting. Most of my friends loathed her mother with a burning passion, though.

I wonder if the camp is still going now the weather has hit -23 degrees.

There's been a series of bomb blasts in Dnipropetrovsk. Difficult to know what might be behind it but i doubt it's connected to high-level politics.
