Back to the sidelines, then.

Have you ever tried pool/water running? I've used it for rehabilitative purposes and it's great. You basically put on a flotation belt around your waist and then "run" in the water, back and forth in the lap swimming lanes. It basically works the same muscles as land running, but with zero impact. Great for injury rehab.

On the downside... it's not really the sexiest of sports, is it?

haha one time my husband and i had a pool running race in a hotel pool and it was really hilarious and fun. needless to say, i didn't win, but it was because i was laughing so hard.

I'm not real big on getting in water.

Jeff, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

I'm calling my doc tomorrow to see if I should go ahead and prepare myself to be disappointed about my upcoming 10 mile race. I'd rather sacrifice it then not be able to start marathon training in the beginning of June.

Jeff, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

i've been getting back into running over the last few weeks. my preferred routine is to warm-up walk half a mile through the park across the street, to another street where, from that point headed due south, exactly seven irregularly shaped blocks makes one mile exactly. i run down and back and then walk home. running a straight mile like that got me wondering though - would somebody run a mile faster on a perfectly straight track or a traditional 4x oval track? seems like there might be a psychological advantage to the oval track, for the purposes of pacing or whatnot, but there's probably also some physical principle that says you're wasting unnecessary energy by constantly turning left?

ran in woods. no deer attacks.

tehresa, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

running in woods sounds so appealing, pleasantly scary

i was never scared until i saw those deer the other day! now it gives a little adrenaline boost, which i suppose is a good thing! nb i am also petrified of poison ivy but i'm starting to wonder if i'm immune because i've never gotten it and i'm pretty sure i've run through it many, many times.

tehresa, Monday, 17 May 2010 00:14 (sixteen years ago)

really struggling to get past 13.5k, with the 1/2 marathon 5-6 weeks away starting to worry about finishing it. :(

xp a pug jumped out at me today, i thought of enbb but not quickly enough to avoid aiming a kick at the little shit tbh.

eh that doesn't tie in naturally with deer or anything, btw, but it did give me an adrenaline boost.

lol!

tehresa, Monday, 17 May 2010 00:18 (sixteen years ago)

i did not lol, the pug did not lol, but i am glad someone got a lol out of the whole shameful episode.

The worst thing I have to dodge is doublewide strollers and rollerbladers.

Jeff, Monday, 17 May 2010 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

a couple of weeks ago I had to leap over a rat after it suddenly ran out in front of me... that was pretty disgusting. most of the time I only see cute animals like squirrels and deer, which is much better.

p-dog, Monday, 17 May 2010 01:33 (sixteen years ago)

my first 'long' run today. heh. not long by anybody else's standard, but i got 4.5 miles in 35 minutes. first significant pain, too. but went away with ice and compression (and a couple of tylenol).

ampersand (remy bean), Monday, 17 May 2010 02:13 (sixteen years ago)

impressive! not the pain, the time :)

tehresa, Monday, 17 May 2010 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

Taken around mile 18.5, just a couple minutes from the finish line:

how do you float like that?

forksclovetofu, Monday, 17 May 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

By running the opposite of how I looked around 11-12 miles, my mental low point. Sucks leaving the start/finish aid station for another 9.5 mile loop, then getting a couple miles into it and being all, "whyyyyy did I start this second loop?!"

I have started the couch to 5k program. I have done it twice thus far. It's been tough, but fun and challenging! My sisters are doing it with me. It also made me realize that I haven't bought new fitness shoes in 5 years. I bought new ones yesterday.

Does anyone have one of those GPS tracking/fitness doohickeys? I would really just like a stopwatch on a wristwatch. Why is that so hard to find?

homosexual II, Monday, 17 May 2010 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

have you looked at target? they have lots of watches like that, but they're usually menz watches. i don't have one to recommend or anything, i've just seen them.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 17 May 2010 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

i got mine at target, timex ironman. my other one (also timex) just died but it's ok because i hated that one. don't get timex "marathon" with heart rate calculator, the timer is stupid and you have to watch it to do intervals.

Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Monday, 17 May 2010 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

I want a gps/hrm thingy! I love data!

tehresa, Monday, 17 May 2010 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this one wasn't a monitor, you would hit the button and count to ten beats then hit it again. it was useful but i would rather have a better timer. i want a hr monitor someday.

Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Monday, 17 May 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

my new phone doesn't have a stopwatch. this is like when atm's stopped giving out fivers

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Monday, 17 May 2010 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

I don't ever recall atms giving out 5s! That sounds beautiful.

do I do a half marathon in sept: y/n?

I reckon I could manage it and it'd be a good experience etc but I'm not sure I want to actively 'tain' for it; can you blag a 13 mile run on core fitness?

cozen, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, always yes.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

Anyone can train for a half marathon in 12 weeks' time.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

And you've got at least 15.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but I don't really want to train; I'm sure I could but I'm lazy like that

but if I can get through by dint of gym-work and the running/aerobic exercise I usually do then great

cozen, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

Well... that may work, also!

Just be prepared to utilize a hefty run/walk strategy, and not focus on yr finishing time.

Well, tehresa might be right to be worried.

Yes, but you're going to finish in good shape. No complaints 'til it's over!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

i started to map my regular routes and it turns out that my long route is 4.5 miles. that's far! (for me)
this summer my goal is to run 8 miles.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

My current injury is weird. It only hurts when I run. Just walking around today, I feel no pain at all. I know it's lurking though. Ready to rear its ugly head a mile into my next run.

I got an orthopedist appointment for the beginning of June, just to check every thing out. This guy is seriously a rockstar ortho. He was the team doctor for the Chicago bulls.

Jeff, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

Watch out La Lechera, it starts out as measuring routes, but it is a slippery slope to full on run tracking.

Jeff, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

it was sorta fun. i need to get a little better before i start measuring too much though. i discourage easily.

hey, should we form an ilxor dailymile group? i'd be in...

today i've got an injury that is perfectly described on the runnersworld forum:

often times, when we have a pain while active, we thing we must have injured or strained a tendon, but there are some superficial nerves that run along the top of the food, some of which can become impinged by pressure from the laces. Even if you lace relatively loosely, when you increase intensity and push off harder, thus bending your foot and shoe more, the top of the shoe presses harder on the top of your foot. Feet also swell a little while running, which may contribute.

There is a prominent superficial nerve that runs right over the top of the first metatarsal cuneiform joint (which leads out to the big toe). Pressure and/or rubbing over this nerve can cause it to become inflamed and to swell. At it's worst, it is downright painful, but often not at first when you start running, and often the pain goes away a couple of miles after it starts up, then returns after your run and is sensitive to pressure. If you pay close attention to the pain when you press on it, it usually radiates down along the metatarsal between the top and ball of the foot and may feel vaguely like a 'funny bone' in your foot (not very funny, after all).

still trying to figure out how to "share" things
i will admit that it's sort of fun to know how far i went, etc. what i don't want is for my jogging to be broadcast to the entire world. can i make the whole thing visible to "friends only"?

i sound like such an old person. sorry.
