i didn't go running yesterday and i feel yucky about it today. tomorrow is my first saturday morning free in FOREVER, so i'm going to do it then. still, i wish i could have gone and had an EXTRA run tomorrow. oh well.

Nice! I love these things. Really great for working out a knotty/sore quad or calf.

Absolutely not. That's a great way to risk injury. I'd do a couple 2-3 mile test runs, slowly, and then go up to *maybe* 6 miles or so before the race. Again, key word: slowly. Don't worry about pace, just get back on yr feet.

Two great reasons to take it really easy before the race. Do some short runs, maybe 5 or 6 miles tops the weekend before, and keep your pace in check. Better to arrive at the starting line a bit undertrained than potentially injured.

Did my first 10k earlier this afternoon. Finished in 49:50 by the clock but there was a big disorganised crowd at the start so I'm knocking another 20 secs off in my head. Really pleased with that, 5 mins per km was my fastest time in training and I'd never done the full distance before.
Considering signing up for a 10-mile in August but think I'm gonna let the adrenaline wear off just a little bit before making any rash decisions!

doing my first 5K next weekend. I ran a test 5K last night, did it in about 35 minutes which I know isn't super-impressive but I was happy with it because I was expecting to be closer to 40 minutes given my pace in recent runs.

lol I was wondering why you were so hyped about doing the George W. Bush run until I googled it! looks awesome. not only was this my first 10k, it was also my first race of any distance (since school sports days anyway), and the whole race-day thing really gives you a speed-boost.

Have you ever tried pool/water running? I've used it for rehabilitative purposes and it's great. You basically put on a flotation belt around your waist and then "run" in the water, back and forth in the lap swimming lanes. It basically works the same muscles as land running, but with zero impact. Great for injury rehab.

I'm calling my doc tomorrow to see if I should go ahead and prepare myself to be disappointed about my upcoming 10 mile race. I'd rather sacrifice it then not be able to start marathon training in the beginning of June.

i've been getting back into running over the last few weeks. my preferred routine is to warm-up walk half a mile through the park across the street, to another street where, from that point headed due south, exactly seven irregularly shaped blocks makes one mile exactly. i run down and back and then walk home. running a straight mile like that got me wondering though - would somebody run a mile faster on a perfectly straight track or a traditional 4x oval track? seems like there might be a psychological advantage to the oval track, for the purposes of pacing or whatnot, but there's probably also some physical principle that says you're wasting unnecessary energy by constantly turning left?

i was never scared until i saw those deer the other day! now it gives a little adrenaline boost, which i suppose is a good thing! nb i am also petrified of poison ivy but i'm starting to wonder if i'm immune because i've never gotten it and i'm pretty sure i've run through it many, many times.

By running the opposite of how I looked around 11-12 miles, my mental low point. Sucks leaving the start/finish aid station for another 9.5 mile loop, then getting a couple miles into it and being all, "whyyyyy did I start this second loop?!"

I have started the couch to 5k program. I have done it twice thus far. It's been tough, but fun and challenging! My sisters are doing it with me. It also made me realize that I haven't bought new fitness shoes in 5 years. I bought new ones yesterday.
Does anyone have one of those GPS tracking/fitness doohickeys? I would really just like a stopwatch on a wristwatch. Why is that so hard to find?

i got mine at target, timex ironman. my other one (also timex) just died but it's ok because i hated that one. don't get timex "marathon" with heart rate calculator, the timer is stupid and you have to watch it to do intervals.
