really wish ben had gunned down that useless chick in the woods like flocke told him to.
I did not need to be shown who mom loved more re: jacob and mib. I will gladly accept a simple contrast over lowering them into the pit of emotional crapitude that Jack frolics in. My point is the backbone of the myth can be a simple contrast.

yeah and what possible reason could she have for loving one more than the other anyway. i guess boy Jacob was a bit annoying?

Jacob seemed more obedient and less difficult so would've expected him to get more love.
Their bio mom actually reminded me of Young Rousseau.

I thought they might be showing us that the island protector doesn't necessarily get to pick the replacement he/she really wants, but has to settle for the one who the island thinks is "good."
Which makes me think that Hurley might be the new Jacob rather than Jack.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
i'm a little more annoyed by this ep in retrospect---mostly because of the timing. like, i'll kinda settle for whatever hokum offered as backstory, but there everything's coming to a head now/alt and they cut away from the action to for an origin story that offers little in the way of details that might affect the ~current~ action.

actually one thing i totally agree with Cuse/Lindelof on is that it's good to have an episode like this as kind of a breather after an episode full of action & significant deaths. for me that's partly because i was so annoyed by how they handled those deaths that it was refreshing to be annoyed by something else, but either way i think it made sense in terms of the rhythm of the season, and for some reason it being two episodes before the finale instead of the penultimate episode also seems appropriate.
― Jordan York (some dude), Thursday, 13 May 2010 19:10 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I def don't mind the idea of this episode. I was pretty excited about it, in fact. It was just handled so artlessly.

lol yes. Agree in principle but it would have been amazing to see this ep earlier on OR have something a bit more mindblowing in this ep - I mean most ppl had already inferred the concrete stuff and everything else was still kinda open to interpretation.

yeah, basically, I mean if somebody had told me beforehand what this episode was about I would have been very excited, but the execution was terrible. I also agree that it should have been placed somewhere in the beginning of the season.
I thought at the very least we'd get some idea of the consequences of MIB leaving the island. (other than it would upset his mother)

I just watched this last night, and so the basis for the whole series has been two asshole kids working out their mommy issues? And a magic light-hole? Oy.
Or basically, dmr otm: I guess in the end I wanted "The Explanation" to be more sci-fi and less fantasy/religious allegory (and the magical island spring to look less Ferngully)
― sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Friday, 14 May 2010 15:58 (sixteen years ago)
I hope they're both revealed to be dumb superstitious suckers of minimal relevance to what the island really is. Like Ben and Locke already have been.
― Matt DC, Friday, 14 May 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
agree this ep was a huge disappointment. i knew what it was going to focus on and had been looking forward to it for weeks, but it just didn't give any info or reveals. it's like they completely shirked away from explaining their own mythology having built it up painstakingly. i think even if the explanation was fantastical or stupid people would be happier with that than this vague lack of explanation.
the tagline for this ep was "locke's motives are revealed." but they aren't! they aren't at all! he wants to leave the island cos.......why?
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 15 May 2010 08:52 (sixteen years ago)
Most of season 6, has been like that for me, one disappointment after another. I feel like after 5 years of suspending disbelief, I want at least a little reward. Instead more mystery has been stacked upon more mystery. And all of the reveals have been half assed at best. After last weeks show, I've lost all faith that these guys have had any idea with where or what they were doing with the story. Sure it's been a fun ride, but I'm beginning to feel like the long con is on me. I don't need or want everything explained, but if they are going to explain the mythology then why not actually do it. Last week's episode feel insulting and left me wondering it's led to this instead of wondering where they are going with this.
― Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 15 May 2010 09:08 (sixteen years ago)
yeah exactly....like what was the point of that episode? why waste an ep on that backstory if, as is the case, not watching it would make zero diff to your understanding or enjoyment of the show or the characters. i feel like they've fucked around so much this season that they haven't even left themselves the time for decent explanations of anything.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 15 May 2010 09:14 (sixteen years ago)
If the last ep served any purpose, it was to vindicate me in my own mind for thinking MiB was a character I want to root for. Now, I hope he kills every last one of these motherfuckers.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 May 2010 11:04 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, that.
he wants to leave the island cos.......why?
well, because he feels betrayed, his mom lied to him about the outside world, he knows he came from somewhere else, he was tricked into staying, and like it was mentioned upthread he just wants to be able to buy an iPad and have a latte.
iow character driven mushy stuff

This episode clarified for me that Jacob is a schlumpy moron and MIB is a sympathetic character and we should be rooting for him. If the happy ending of this series is Flocke winning and the candidates dying due to Jacob's incompetent machinations I will be satisfied.
― I am using your worlds, Saturday, 15 May 2010 21:49 (sixteen years ago)

Finale's gonna be Hurley on the beach reciting Larkin.
Philip Larkin - This Be The Verse
They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do.They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats,Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another's throats.
Man hands on misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf.Get out as early as you can, And don't have any kids yourself.

Can't believe there's only a couple of hours of this to go and I'm still WTF at pretty much everything. I hate that they've made all the mysteries of the first five series pretty much irrelevant at this point (polar bears, Dharma, Hanso, time travel, numbers, others, baby snatching, pregnancies, supply drop, electromagnetism, etc = we will never know).
I hate that they left Desmond out of half a series then brought him back with THIS GUY IS REALLY FUCKIN IMPORTANT then stuck him in a fucking hole for weeks! I hate hate hate that they've killed a hundred people and we still have Kate Jack Sawyer threesome bs.
Ancient mythology reveal ep was meh but would have been better at the start of the series. MID FTW.
Still totally hooked of course but I think S6 will tarnish Lost's legacy in years to come.
― this skit is ba-na-nas (onimo), Sunday, 16 May 2010 00:42 (sixteen years ago)
A bad final season can never take away the enjoyment the show brought me in previous seasons.
I recognize how hard it is to create 100 hours of coherent storylines given the unbelievable complexity of this show's plot compared to ... any other tv show ever? ... but they are failing right now, and that's just a fact.
― no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Sunday, 16 May 2010 00:53 (sixteen years ago)
polar bears = they were brought to the island by dharma and experimented on in cages on Hydra island.
Dharma/Hanso = some hippie scientist-idealist types who found the island via the pendulum (likely aided by Ms. Hawking) and formed a commune on the island. This is all very directly addressed in season 5. Hanso funded them.
time travel = I don't know what you want here. The powerful "source" of the island can be manipulated so that people on it traveled through time and space? There's not going to be like a dissertation on this, it's just the way it is?
others = people brought to the island over time and shepherded into a dysfunctional sort of society by Jacob.
baby snatching = plot device that went nowhere. just forget about this part. and/or just consider this a preoccupation of Ben's that nobody else in the hierarchy really cared about.
Plenty of this stuff can be sort of sussed out without having Ghost Michael sit Hurley down and dully go "okay, so this is exactly what was going on here."
― Clay, Sunday, 16 May 2010 01:00 (sixteen years ago)
Baby snatching was totally explained. They snatched them to try to keep them alive, via Juliet's experiments. Also, some kids on the island have powers -- for example, Jacob and his brother -- so they are on the lookout for other kids with similar traits.
― no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Sunday, 16 May 2010 01:09 (sixteen years ago)
I can do all that rationalising myself and come up with a dozen more how/why supplemental questions and I'm not asking for a 2 hour Q&A on every mystery - my point is that p much five seasons of intrigue was wiped out by omg new guy on the beach with Jacob. Those five years are now small beer in a six season story arc when you realise it was all just whittling through names. It's like they had a huge story and decided to spend five years fucking about then they're attempting to squeeze all the meaningful things into five minutes.
I can't find a link but I remember around S1 or S2 the writers were saying they weren't making it up as they went alone and that everything that happened would be explained with science & there would be nothing supernatural. Now we're getting "it just is that way" and "we can't explain everything" yet even their big reveal episodes reveal very little. We're all being asked to be Men of Faith.
― this skit is ba-na-nas (onimo), Sunday, 16 May 2010 01:21 (sixteen years ago)
but the Others thought Smokey was a "security system" - do we know they know about Brother? Weren't Jacob and Brother given powers by the island/wine/RPG save point?
There's load of wee untidy things that at this point we just have to accept - like Widmore somehow knows more of the island mythology than Ben/Others/Dharma. I think most of my grumbles aren't about lack of explanations but more to do with bad/lazy writing and the writers dismissing those criticisms as invalid.
― this skit is ba-na-nas (onimo), Sunday, 16 May 2010 01:27 (sixteen years ago)
At least they referred back to the baby snatching stuff in this episode, with CJ stealing tykes and stoning mommy. Maybe the Others did it in some perverse imitation of their gods.
― President Keyes, Sunday, 16 May 2010 01:49 (sixteen years ago)
i'm definitely holding out hope that we'll get some kind of satisfactory explanation of what Widmore and Hawking know and how they know it.
but man, this show probably should've embraced its Twin Peaks WTF factor more to at least make all of these loose ends a little more wacky or fun or artsy.
― do you ever feel like some people are CHICKEN shit nowadays (some dude), Sunday, 16 May 2010 02:53 (sixteen years ago)
said it b4, but wish this show were just about ben vs widmore for control of the magickal island
they ought to have made much more clear, though, what the consequences of MIB/smoky escaping would be, what widmore wants with the island, etc.
