Dharma probably didn't know about the donkey wheel but instead created the Orchid to teleport polar bears using the same power source.

or maybe they just brought the polar bears over normally and one strayed into the donkey wheel area and accidentally got zapped to Tunisia idk

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

maybe or maybe or maybe. you can keep doing this long after the show is over.

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

maybe the cabin was an old restaurant that smokey managed

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

maybe the water in the temple brings people back to life because it has high levels of high fructose corn syrup

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

maybe the statue was brought to the island by the lighthouse.

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

do we think ted actually ends up with robin?

MOY MAYBE

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

so CJ was both smokemonster and guardian of the island at the same time, and all she did, keeping the two boys, putting them against each other, was a long-con to get free

right?

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

no she is aunt robin, so unless time travel or alt-reality is involved, i dunno

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but they keep saying ted is an "unreliable narrator" right?

ô_o (Nicole), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

so CJ was both smokemonster and guardian of the island at the same time

neither imo, because of the boys ghost mom appearing. MAYBE MIB subconciously willed her to appear tho right?

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

also they said ted's wife lives with that girl he dated that time, so unless robin is living a double life, i dunno

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

She was just some batshit woman in the woods.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

that's true
maybe the ending will be, he leaves their mother for robin

someone needs to explain why CJ is specifically the smoke monster and not just, like, somehow all-knowing or immortal or powerful enough to have killed all those people. seemed to me like the smoke monster was created when MIB went down to the water and the light turned dark.

Jordan York (some dude), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

Egyptians knew about smokey because he's in their hieroglyphs. But this episode seems to have been set post-egypt. So that would mean there'd been a pre-MIB smokey.

JimD, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

That was just some 19th century retro-Egyptian architecture.

President Keyes, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

My wife says smoke monster predates MIB, but once MIB goes through the rivercave press, the newly-released smokey gets MIB's memories and proceeds wrongly thinking of itself as MIB in a new form.

Like Alan Moore's reboot of Swamp Thing, who thought he was a man turned monster but really was just a monster with a human's memories stuck on.

Felix Frankfurter, Man Of Justice (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

The good guys dress in black remember that
Just in case we ever face to face and make contact
The title held by me M.I.B.
Means what you think you saw, you did not see
So don't blink be what was there
Is now gone, black suit with the black Ray Ban's on
Walk in shadow move in silence
Guard against extra-terrestrial violence
But yo we ain't on no government list
We straight don't exist, no names and no fingerprints
Saw somethin strange watch your back
Cause you never quite know where the M.I.B.'s is at
Uh ah

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

? the black + white stones? oh right so it proves that all along your show has had a deep underlying theme of "good vs. bad" not like almost every tv show ever.

― pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:15 AM (4 hours ago) Bookmark

actually think not enough shows stick to this simplicity and try to get too clever showing nobody is entirely good/evil. especially shows dealing with myths like heroes, lost, bsg. Maybe that goes back to the writers believing they are character driven shows but being flat out wrong.

bee en u_u (bnw), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think that the black/white thing is as simple as good vs. evil.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

one of the island rules is that MIB can only wear black

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

is only because MIA was already in use

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

no but over-complicating motivations can reduce their contrasts, especially when motivations change at a whim which Lost is very guilty of. xposts

it all goes back to shitty writing though.

bee en u_u (bnw), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

we still don't even know who is good and who is evil! including widmore.

ben's "we're the good guys michael" is so irrelevant at this point

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

Is there going to be some big reveal with MIB's name or are they just being dicks and making people type 'MIB' and 'Smokey' all the time?

Sidelining Ben completely as a character in this series has been the shittiest thing about it. He should be right in the middle of the action, we should be dubious about his motivations right til the very last episode. Mostly because Locke makes a shit villain.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

Actually does Ben even know Widmore's on the island yet? That face-off should at least be fun.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

isn't it the point that good/evil have been interchangeable or flexible wrt people's actions? sure hope so

really wish ben had gunned down that useless chick in the woods like flocke told him to.

I did not need to be shown who mom loved more re: jacob and mib. I will gladly accept a simple contrast over lowering them into the pit of emotional crapitude that Jack frolics in. My point is the backbone of the myth can be a simple contrast.

yeah and what possible reason could she have for loving one more than the other anyway. i guess boy Jacob was a bit annoying?

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

pretty horrible to steal someone's kids and then show favoritism

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

she put emphasis on him being "special" just like locke's mum did

basically the message is that women fuck with your mind

all i wanna do is poll poll poll poll and zing and discuss mia (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah she probably didn't even need a reason. moms are like that :(

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

Jacob seemed more obedient and less difficult so would've expected him to get more love.

Their bio mom actually reminded me of Young Rousseau.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

I thought they might be showing us that the island protector doesn't necessarily get to pick the replacement he/she really wants, but has to settle for the one who the island thinks is "good."

Which makes me think that Hurley might be the new Jacob rather than Jack.

President Keyes, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

i'm a little more annoyed by this ep in retrospect---mostly because of the timing. like, i'll kinda settle for whatever hokum offered as backstory, but there everything's coming to a head now/alt and they cut away from the action to for an origin story that offers little in the way of details that might affect the ~current~ action.

just because they did it now! wouldn't have bothered me in an earlier season tbh

actually one thing i totally agree with Cuse/Lindelof on is that it's good to have an episode like this as kind of a breather after an episode full of action & significant deaths. for me that's partly because i was so annoyed by how they handled those deaths that it was refreshing to be annoyed by something else, but either way i think it made sense in terms of the rhythm of the season, and for some reason it being two episodes before the finale instead of the penultimate episode also seems appropriate.

Jordan York (some dude), Thursday, 13 May 2010 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I def don't mind the idea of this episode. I was pretty excited about it, in fact. It was just handled so artlessly.

jaymc, Thursday, 13 May 2010 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

i was so annoyed by how they handled those deaths that it was refreshing to be annoyed by something else

lol yes. Agree in principle but it would have been amazing to see this ep earlier on OR have something a bit more mindblowing in this ep - I mean most ppl had already inferred the concrete stuff and everything else was still kinda open to interpretation.
