It'll be proof that... we are all John Locke. Gullible, *wanting* to believe. Then a smoke monster eats us all.

idk this show's discourse about faith has become this meta thing about the many unresolved plotlines etc. we are all alpert in that one ep.

Can anyone link back to the bit on the season one thread where we were all posting theories about how Adam and Eve would turn out to be the smoke monster and his fake mother?
― James Mitchell, Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:20 (sixteen years ago)
it mirrors the hatch 'press the button/don't press the button' storyline in S2 i suppose
― pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:21 (sixteen years ago)
are the rules clear enough now that we can understand the loophole' that allowed mib to kill jacob?
― pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:24 (sixteen years ago)
wait anyway... if CJ was the smoke monster then... jacob didn't replace her?
― Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:26 (sixteen years ago)
also if the rule is: to kill the special magic people you have to stab them without letting them talk to you...didn't jacob speak to ben before he plunged the knife in?
― pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:26 (sixteen years ago)
yes, but ben didn't quite catch what he said, so it's allowable
― Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:27 (sixteen years ago)
it would really be nice is some of this made sense. i can handle ridiculous explanations for stuff (i agree there is no reasonable way to explain it all now) but it would be nice the plot of the last few seasons hung together in even the most basic sense.
― pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:34 (sixteen years ago)
don't think CJ was the smokemonster, tho it's odd that MIB never stopped calling her 'mother'.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:50 (sixteen years ago)
the theory that she was comes from how she fucked shit up with the villagers
also: fuckin wheels and light, how do they work
― Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)
i think the wheel and the light is the single lamest thing in "lost" ever
it was cool when it was introduced, totally lame when they just write it off the way the did. "what is the most basic and simplest explanation we can give for this wheel thing we wrote in here?"
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)
ya the whole ep felt reverse-engineered to explain all the random shit that we, deluded viewers, thought was a coherent 'mythology'
― all i wanna do is poll poll poll poll and zing and discuss mia (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:16 (sixteen years ago)
Surprised they didn't show anyone building a statue at any point. Also no explanation for how the hell Jacob can live forever and, like, get off the island and stuff.
Maybe the light thing was keeping Smokey prisoner and that's why Jacob was never meant to go down there? Ah who cares, less Roman bollocks, more Desmond.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:25 (sixteen years ago)
sorry but a mechanism involving light, water and a wheel that enables time and space travel is not really weirder or lamer than a bible-bashing cloud of black smoke
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)
but MIB should've said "This guy who washed up on the island called Orffyreus has discovered a way for me to leave the island..."
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:33 (sixteen years ago)
equating weird patchy unexciting backstory to the fun crazy things the backstory was supposed to explain is NAGL
― Jordan York (some dude), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:50 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ exactly. you can't tell me it's "not really weirder or lamer than a bible-bashing cloud of black smoke" until they give us an explanation for the black smoke, which they haven't.
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)
however, the explanation for the donkey wheel could have used a couple more brainstorming sessions in the old carlton/cuse lab
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:53 (sixteen years ago)
I dug the donkey wheel, even if the presentation wasn't all it could've been. Liked the idea that humans would use the technology available at the time, in this case Roman era hydraulic engineering to harness the power of the island, be it magical or extraterrestrial or whatever. (In much the same way MIB uses whatever philosophy is in vogue--Catholocism, self helpiness--to manipulate humans of different eras (someone's idea from upthread.)
I figure Dharma discovered the ruins of the wheel MIB was building, perhaps with some ghostly assistance, and rebuilt it, testing it out on polar bears--hence the skeleton Charlotte found in Tunisia.

the black smoke is what comes out when you go into the magic stream-hole
all totally explained
― all i wanna do is poll poll poll poll and zing and discuss mia (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)
an explanation of its origin or of how it actually works? forget the latter. they've given a suggestion that introducing angry MIB to the light (Pandora's Box or whatever) created the smoke. as CJ said the light source contains life/death good/evil whatever and this case the product was 'evil'.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)
assuming then smokey finishes the donkey wheel and implements the ability to teleport, but still don't know why he couldn't leave in someone else's body or without killing Jacob and candidates.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:02 (sixteen years ago)
Dharma probably didn't know about the donkey wheel but instead created the Orchid to teleport polar bears using the same power source.

or maybe they just brought the polar bears over normally and one strayed into the donkey wheel area and accidentally got zapped to Tunisia idk
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:04 (sixteen years ago)
maybe or maybe or maybe. you can keep doing this long after the show is over.
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)
maybe the cabin was an old restaurant that smokey managed
maybe the water in the temple brings people back to life because it has high levels of high fructose corn syrup
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:15 (sixteen years ago)
maybe the statue was brought to the island by the lighthouse.

do we think ted actually ends up with robin?
― all i wanna do is poll poll poll poll and zing and discuss mia (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)
MOY MAYBE
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)
so CJ was both smokemonster and guardian of the island at the same time, and all she did, keeping the two boys, putting them against each other, was a long-con to get free
right?
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:22 (sixteen years ago)
no she is aunt robin, so unless time travel or alt-reality is involved, i dunno
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:23 (sixteen years ago)
yeah but they keep saying ted is an "unreliable narrator" right?

so CJ was both smokemonster and guardian of the island at the same time
neither imo, because of the boys ghost mom appearing. MAYBE MIB subconciously willed her to appear tho right?
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)
also they said ted's wife lives with that girl he dated that time, so unless robin is living a double life, i dunno
― cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)
She was just some batshit woman in the woods.

that's truemaybe the ending will be, he leaves their mother for robin

someone needs to explain why CJ is specifically the smoke monster and not just, like, somehow all-knowing or immortal or powerful enough to have killed all those people. seemed to me like the smoke monster was created when MIB went down to the water and the light turned dark.
― Jordan York (some dude), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)
Egyptians knew about smokey because he's in their hieroglyphs. But this episode seems to have been set post-egypt. So that would mean there'd been a pre-MIB smokey.
― JimD, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:49 (sixteen years ago)
That was just some 19th century retro-Egyptian architecture.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)
My wife says smoke monster predates MIB, but once MIB goes through the rivercave press, the newly-released smokey gets MIB's memories and proceeds wrongly thinking of itself as MIB in a new form.
Like Alan Moore's reboot of Swamp Thing, who thought he was a man turned monster but really was just a monster with a human's memories stuck on.

? the black + white stones? oh right so it proves that all along your show has had a deep underlying theme of "good vs. bad" not like almost every tv show ever.
― pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:15 AM (4 hours ago) Bookmark
actually think not enough shows stick to this simplicity and try to get too clever showing nobody is entirely good/evil. especially shows dealing with myths like heroes, lost, bsg. Maybe that goes back to the writers believing they are character driven shows but being flat out wrong.
― bee en u_u (bnw), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think that the black/white thing is as simple as good vs. evil.
