That tank they dunked Sayid in was originally built for Baywatch.

Some serious WWII Germany parallels, here, in the Lost fanbase.

some of Cuselof's comments and reactions in that interview are alarmingly bitter for sure but others I'm cool with. the whole Jack carbon-dating thing was funny.

as for the episode itself, LOTS of eyerolling and i agree it didn't show/explain enough to satisfy but i'm almost certainly unsatisfiable now so ehh. been worse episodes this season i think.

island ghosts not always being smokey confirmed here then. oh good... janney's character is some bs tho - do they expect people not to clamour for her origin just as much as we have jacob's?

would've liked a shot of the smokemonster pouring out of MIB's nose or something. MIB was great in this ep tho right?

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:35 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that guy -- titus wellver? did i make that up? -- is awesome. shame jacob is so freakin terrible, at the acting.

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:40 (sixteen years ago)

titus was super intense on deadwood. one of the best characters.

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:56 (sixteen years ago)

janney's character is some bs tho - do they expect people not to clamour for her origin just as much as we have jacob's?

Why would we need an origin for her? She's just part of a string of protectors who come to the island by accident and become candidates. If anything I'd want to see how this process began, but I don't really want to see that.

Re: that interview. For awhile now the producers have been talking about how they don't want to go the full disclosure route (midiclorians, end of the Matrix trilogy) because they feel that would suck. I'm cool with leaving some stuff mysterious, because for me the show's suggestions have always been more intriguing than the explanations they've presented.

But when they're comparing their show to the Sopranos---I don't remember the Sopranos having any central mystery hanging over its entire run, or running any ARGs inviting viewers to geek out over Valenzetti equations or whatever. You can't, at this point, pull out the auteur defense.

But yeah, if all they're hearing is stuff like "I will hate you forever if you don't tell me who Sayid shot on the golf course" then I sympathize a bit.

President Keyes, Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:58 (sixteen years ago)

i think we are supposed to just accept that someone has been on the island since the beginning of time performing cj/jacob's role xp

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:59 (sixteen years ago)

weaving the weavy thing and, uh, kidnapping people

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:00 (sixteen years ago)

so how come you turn into weavy island protector by drinking that drink? was the bottle the same bottle jacob used to explain what the island is to richard (that was smashed by flocke at the end of that episode)?

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:02 (sixteen years ago)

it was clearly a reference to that bottle. wonder if we will find out if it was the exact same one.

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:03 (sixteen years ago)

what worries me is that from that interview it seems like this episode was them wrapping up the island mythology stuff. now they want to focus on the fate of their beloved characters for the rest of the run.

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:06 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think they have ever known what the island is apart from a place where crazy weird shit happens :(

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:07 (sixteen years ago)

that's what i mean really - the origin of the process. why just show us an earlier link in the chain.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:07 (sixteen years ago)

i would have been much happier if adam + eve were revealed to be some character we've known since the start as a consequence of wrapping up all the time travel stuff. it's like they just used to nuclear bomb to put an end to the time loop stuffs (even tho it makes no sense) and they are never gonna revisit it.

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:08 (sixteen years ago)

oh god the adam and eve reveal was terrible!

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

yep - stopped caring about that three seasons ago

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

there's a lot they'll never answer. jacob isn't "special". but how did she make out that MIB was? unlike jacob, she didn't have a big list o' candidates did she? they just showed up? fuk u "lost".

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

When all is said and done, people are going to point to the skeletons and say, ''That is proof that from the very beginning, they always knew that they were going to do this.''

*cough* ...bullshit... *cough*

James Mitchell, Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

srsly

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:15 (sixteen years ago)

i do feel pissed off with the writers. i don't know about other ppl but i've spent a fair bit of time defending this show against the 'they are making it up as they go along' haters. and now i feel dumb cos i think i was wrong. i mean how can they sit there and say the adam+eve reveal proves they had it all mapped out from the start? the black + white stones? oh right so it proves that all along your show has had a deep underlying theme of "good vs. bad" not like almost every tv show ever.

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:15 (sixteen years ago)

basically i think "how i met your mother" is going to resolve more convincingly than "lost"

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:16 (sixteen years ago)

its like the moral of the show on so many levels is don't believe the bullshit people feed you

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:16 (sixteen years ago)

truly we are all locke

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

It'll be proof that... we are all John Locke. Gullible, *wanting* to believe. Then a smoke monster eats us all.

idk this show's discourse about faith has become this meta thing about the many unresolved plotlines etc. we are all alpert in that one ep.

Can anyone link back to the bit on the season one thread where we were all posting theories about how Adam and Eve would turn out to be the smoke monster and his fake mother?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

it mirrors the hatch 'press the button/don't press the button' storyline in S2 i suppose

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

are the rules clear enough now that we can understand the loophole' that allowed mib to kill jacob?

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:24 (sixteen years ago)

wait anyway... if CJ was the smoke monster then... jacob didn't replace her?

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

also if the rule is: to kill the special magic people you have to stab them without letting them talk to you...didn't jacob speak to ben before he plunged the knife in?

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

yes, but ben didn't quite catch what he said, so it's allowable

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

it would really be nice is some of this made sense. i can handle ridiculous explanations for stuff (i agree there is no reasonable way to explain it all now) but it would be nice the plot of the last few seasons hung together in even the most basic sense.

pollos da don (tpp), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:34 (sixteen years ago)

don't think CJ was the smokemonster, tho it's odd that MIB never stopped calling her 'mother'.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

the theory that she was comes from how she fucked shit up with the villagers

also: fuckin wheels and light, how do they work

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)

i think the wheel and the light is the single lamest thing in "lost" ever

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)

it was cool when it was introduced, totally lame when they just write it off the way the did. "what is the most basic and simplest explanation we can give for this wheel thing we wrote in here?"

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

ya the whole ep felt reverse-engineered to explain all the random shit that we, deluded viewers, thought was a coherent 'mythology'

all i wanna do is poll poll poll poll and zing and discuss mia (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:16 (sixteen years ago)

Surprised they didn't show anyone building a statue at any point. Also no explanation for how the hell Jacob can live forever and, like, get off the island and stuff.

Maybe the light thing was keeping Smokey prisoner and that's why Jacob was never meant to go down there? Ah who cares, less Roman bollocks, more Desmond.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

sorry but a mechanism involving light, water and a wheel that enables time and space travel is not really weirder or lamer than a bible-bashing cloud of black smoke

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

but MIB should've said "This guy who washed up on the island called Orffyreus has discovered a way for me to leave the island..."

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

equating weird patchy unexciting backstory to the fun crazy things the backstory was supposed to explain is NAGL

Jordan York (some dude), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:50 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ exactly. you can't tell me it's "not really weirder or lamer than a bible-bashing cloud of black smoke" until they give us an explanation for the black smoke, which they haven't.

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)

however, the explanation for the donkey wheel could have used a couple more brainstorming sessions in the old carlton/cuse lab

cutty, Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

I dug the donkey wheel, even if the presentation wasn't all it could've been. Liked the idea that humans would use the technology available at the time, in this case Roman era hydraulic engineering to harness the power of the island, be it magical or extraterrestrial or whatever. (In much the same way MIB uses whatever philosophy is in vogue--Catholocism, self helpiness--to manipulate humans of different eras (someone's idea from upthread.)

I figure Dharma discovered the ruins of the wheel MIB was building, perhaps with some ghostly assistance, and rebuilt it, testing it out on polar bears--hence the skeleton Charlotte found in Tunisia.

the black smoke is what comes out when you go into the magic stream-hole

all totally explained

all i wanna do is poll poll poll poll and zing and discuss mia (history mayne), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

an explanation of its origin or of how it actually works? forget the latter. they've given a suggestion that introducing angry MIB to the light (Pandora's Box or whatever) created the smoke. as CJ said the light source contains life/death good/evil whatever and this case the product was 'evil'.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

assuming then smokey finishes the donkey wheel and implements the ability to teleport, but still don't know why he couldn't leave in someone else's body or without killing Jacob and candidates.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

Dharma probably didn't know about the donkey wheel but instead created the Orchid to teleport polar bears using the same power source.

or maybe they just brought the polar bears over normally and one strayed into the donkey wheel area and accidentally got zapped to Tunisia idk

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

maybe or maybe or maybe. you can keep doing this long after the show is over.
