we had a good run
god is it that bad?
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:53 (sixteen years ago)
well we might avoid the worst of it because all uk ilxors are disgusting savages to whom the very idea of physical exercise is anaethema, but in the future it may be best to avoid gross generalisation of other cultures imo.

I've contracted some sort of evil throat disease now. So frustrating. Hope to return to the pavement tomorrow. I've got a 10 mile race in 2.5 weeks.
― Jeff, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)
Last I checked you don't "run" with your throat iirc.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)
goddamn.
running 'hardman' thread 2010!
― Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 14:00 (sixteen years ago)
well, at least if i have been truly offensive, i may have fully arrived on the ILX consciousness; that alone is something to celebrate.
let's celebrate this moment with a brisk jog.
Jeff i am sorry to hear about this throat disease. i had one of those once (maybe strep?) and i went to a weird ancient Colombian doctor who wrote my vitals on a post-it note. he gave me antibiotics.

OH, I'll run, but I'm traveling all day today, so I won't have time. Tomorrow I'm running, throat or no throat.
― Jeff, Monday, 10 May 2010 14:06 (sixteen years ago)
I suggest traveling by foot to wherever you are going. No matter the distance.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 10 May 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)
i have decided that im not gonna go running today and i am COOL WITH THAT

i took a few days off myself but tonight it's on

Guys, I'll be running the San Francisco Marathon in July on my honeymoon -- my fiance's first marathon. I'm thinking about making it a charity run, something for a great cause (v. likely a "motivate kids to run!" charity)... but wouldn't want to be the guy with a $250 target who only raises $30 or something. Could also serve as a "trial" charity run for a 50-mile charity run in honor of Bimble (as discussed upthread) -- for a mental health charity, suicide prevention charity, or something similar.
Would anyone here be interested in donating, say, $10 or so? Either for a July marathon charity... or for a ridiculously long, exhausting, 50-mile charity run (a bit later this year)?

you'd be surprised how easy it is to raise $ for a good cause! i've raised $270 for my next charity run basically w/out even trying.
i would be down to donate as a wedding/running charity gift to you and your new wife!

I think I have Iliotibial Band Syndrome.

jeff -- what's that? is it in your throat?
also i will donate $10 for mental health charity for sure
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:14 (sixteen years ago)
I actually just got a foam roller. Tried it out a little on the ITB and it hurt like hell, so I think it's working. My problem is finding time to add yet another task to my daily routine.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:27 (sixteen years ago)
I also have a "The Stick" now.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:32 (sixteen years ago)
I've got a the Soldier Field 10 mile race coming up in 2 weeks and I am woefully unprepared. I haven't ran since I was last having my ITB/Knee issues. Should I try and knock out at least one 10 mile run before the race?
― Jeff, Friday, 14 May 2010 21:54 (sixteen years ago)
ha isn't that basically the same question I asked you the other night about the 5K?
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 14 May 2010 23:04 (sixteen years ago)
i didn't go running yesterday and i feel yucky about it today. tomorrow is my first saturday morning free in FOREVER, so i'm going to do it then. still, i wish i could have gone and had an EXTRA run tomorrow. oh well.
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Friday, 14 May 2010 23:33 (sixteen years ago)
It is the same question! I guess I should be able to answer it myself. My biggest fear is that I'm going to hurt myself in these two weeks where I can't run it. My other big fear is that I'm going to get a horrible pain while running it and not be able to finish it.
― Jeff, Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:37 (sixteen years ago)
Nice! I love these things. Really great for working out a knotty/sore quad or calf.
Should I try and knock out at least one 10 mile run before the race?
Absolutely not. That's a great way to risk injury. I'd do a couple 2-3 mile test runs, slowly, and then go up to *maybe* 6 miles or so before the race. Again, key word: slowly. Don't worry about pace, just get back on yr feet.
My biggest fear is that I'm going to hurt myself in these two weeks where I can't run it. My other big fear is that I'm going to get a horrible pain while running it and not be able to finish it.
Two great reasons to take it really easy before the race. Do some short runs, maybe 5 or 6 miles tops the weekend before, and keep your pace in check. Better to arrive at the starting line a bit undertrained than potentially injured.

I like the way you think.
― Jeff, Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:57 (sixteen years ago)
Did my first 10k earlier this afternoon. Finished in 49:50 by the clock but there was a big disorganised crowd at the start so I'm knocking another 20 secs off in my head. Really pleased with that, 5 mins per km was my fastest time in training and I'd never done the full distance before.
Considering signing up for a 10-mile in August but think I'm gonna let the adrenaline wear off just a little bit before making any rash decisions!
― p-dog, Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)
nice! i'm getting ready to do my first 10k coming up in june. it's the GWB run, so i'm super hyped to be doing it.
― Aerosol, Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:30 (sixteen years ago)
doing my first 5K next weekend. I ran a test 5K last night, did it in about 35 minutes which I know isn't super-impressive but I was happy with it because I was expecting to be closer to 40 minutes given my pace in recent runs.
― congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)
thinking about doing a 10k next month. as my first actual run with other people type event. will be amazed if it happens in under an hour.
― thomp, Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:41 (sixteen years ago)
lol I was wondering why you were so hyped about doing the George W. Bush run until I googled it! looks awesome. not only was this my first 10k, it was also my first race of any distance (since school sports days anyway), and the whole race-day thing really gives you a speed-boost.
xp go for it! lol i'm definitely feeling the buzz. gonna go have a beer now...
― p-dog, Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:48 (sixteen years ago)
keep seeing deer in the woods by my house which makes me scared to run on the trails because i'm afraid a deer is gonna chase me or something.
― tehresa, Sunday, 16 May 2010 00:12 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think that's what deer do. At all.

Up at 4am today. About to drive 1-1/2 hours to a 30k/18.6 mile race...!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 16 May 2010 09:40 (sixteen years ago)
yeah deer are really afraid of people! i got new shoes and a new watch this week
― Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Sunday, 16 May 2010 11:48 (sixteen years ago)
yeah deer are nothing to worry about, there are loads where I run but it's a bonus if you actually get to see one.
― p-dog, Sunday, 16 May 2010 11:53 (sixteen years ago)
i know it is silly. i think i am still paranoid after the elk warning signs when i was out on the olympic peninsula. they said elk had been charging people. deer are just little elk, right?
― tehresa, Sunday, 16 May 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)
i got new shoes and a new watch this week
Which?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 16 May 2010 19:20 (sixteen years ago)
After not running for a week, I tried today and had to stop after one mile because of knee pain.
― Jeff, Sunday, 16 May 2010 21:33 (sixteen years ago)
Back to the sidelines, then.
Have you ever tried pool/water running? I've used it for rehabilitative purposes and it's great. You basically put on a flotation belt around your waist and then "run" in the water, back and forth in the lap swimming lanes. It basically works the same muscles as land running, but with zero impact. Great for injury rehab.

On the downside... it's not really the sexiest of sports, is it?

haha one time my husband and i had a pool running race in a hotel pool and it was really hilarious and fun. needless to say, i didn't win, but it was because i was laughing so hard.

I'm not real big on getting in water.
― Jeff, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:28 (sixteen years ago)
I'm calling my doc tomorrow to see if I should go ahead and prepare myself to be disappointed about my upcoming 10 mile race. I'd rather sacrifice it then not be able to start marathon training in the beginning of June.
― Jeff, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:29 (sixteen years ago)
i've been getting back into running over the last few weeks. my preferred routine is to warm-up walk half a mile through the park across the street, to another street where, from that point headed due south, exactly seven irregularly shaped blocks makes one mile exactly. i run down and back and then walk home. running a straight mile like that got me wondering though - would somebody run a mile faster on a perfectly straight track or a traditional 4x oval track? seems like there might be a psychological advantage to the oval track, for the purposes of pacing or whatnot, but there's probably also some physical principle that says you're wasting unnecessary energy by constantly turning left?
― iiiijjjj, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:39 (sixteen years ago)
ran in woods. no deer attacks.
― tehresa, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:41 (sixteen years ago)
running in woods sounds so appealing, pleasantly scary

i was never scared until i saw those deer the other day! now it gives a little adrenaline boost, which i suppose is a good thing! nb i am also petrified of poison ivy but i'm starting to wonder if i'm immune because i've never gotten it and i'm pretty sure i've run through it many, many times.
― tehresa, Monday, 17 May 2010 00:14 (sixteen years ago)
really struggling to get past 13.5k, with the 1/2 marathon 5-6 weeks away starting to worry about finishing it. :(
xp a pug jumped out at me today, i thought of enbb but not quickly enough to avoid aiming a kick at the little shit tbh.
