another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a followup interview for the possible jobby job (!) at 4, I'll probably vamoose not long after that wraps up.

good luck usa (dan m), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link

A Loop business assoc. urged Loop businesses to let their people go at 3 p.m.

The newspaper shows the line that is forming for the rally. Gates don't even open till 8:30!

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link

what is going to happen at the rally if the results are close and/or mccain refuses to concede until all the votes are completely counted? are people going to hang out all night doing nothing?

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

riot

good luck usa (dan m), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

ILLVILLE!
wish I could go to the rally, but I don't know how bad the congestion is going to be (besides the fact I don't have a ticket).
probably better off watching it at home.

primalfixations, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't find it now, but I read somewhere that the organizers got a license for amplified sound until 1 a.m.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

If McCain doesn't concede until late, Stevie Wonder does another set.

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, isn't there a pretty good chance that this might not be all figured out until late? i know a lot of the swing states are in the east but if it's even remotely close, won't mccain want to wait and see what the complete totals are?

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link

There's a good chance that the networks will call the race at 7 p.m.

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Hour by hour guide to results -- these times are Eastern. Results start at 5 p.m.!

Why do you say that?

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i know a lot of places are saying it might be callable early but it also seems possible that it might take until the wee hours of the morning

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

no one knows

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

from what I've read, if you see PA, NC, VA, FL etc going Obama, they're going to be calling it early

good luck usa (dan m), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Because http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/04/us/politics/04network.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss]
says that "senior vice president of CBS News, Paul Friedman, said the prospects for Barack Obama or John McCain meeting the minimum threshold of electoral votes could be clear as soon as 8 p.m. — before polls in even New York and Rhode Island close, let alone those in Texas and California. At such a moment, determined from a combination of polling data and samples of actual votes, the network could share its preliminary projection with viewers, Mr. Friedman said."

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks. That's what I've been reading too, but some folks I talk to dismiss the idea of calling the election at 8 p.m. - regardless of the results - out of hand.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

the idea is completely dismissible, that does not mean they won't be doing it anyway

good luck usa (dan m), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

you guys i have a bunch of facebook "friends" (people who went to my hs) and still live in ohio. some are GOBAMA but others? "McCain all the way baby" etc.

i am nervous about ohio because i want redemption for my state of origin.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i also want the desire to troll these people to go away, but so far i am keeping it barely under the surface

La Lechera, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I learned last night that there's a law in Canada that forbids the media from talking about election results at all until all off the polls have closed nationwide. In last month's election, this meant that bloggers were all on top of the story for hours before the media could legally announce anything.

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry to keep harping on this, but even if networks call the election for obama by 8 or whenever, it seems like it won't matter because obama will be hesitant to claim victory until a) mccain concedes or b) all the votes are actually tallied. so really it comes down to when mccain concedes, not when networks call it.

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

i learned today (on 538 i think) that france has a ban on polls 48 hours before, and maybe after, a major election? seems like a good idea

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

just says in France, it is illegal to conduct a poll of any kind within 48 hours of the election, which is somewhat unclear

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

1.9% is as close to certain as a mathematical model gets.

down to 1.1% now btw

Obama should just start a five-hour victory speech at 7 p.m. (I know, I know, park's not open). Do it William Jennings Bryan/Castro style.

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

My folks were in Spain for their last election, and if I remember right the candidates there can't even campaign until like the 2-3 weeks prior to the election day. No ads, no speeches, nada.

good luck usa (dan m), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

A:... The permit for the event runs until 1 a.m., but it may run later if necessary.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Guys, I'm going to go ahead and call it at 3:30 CDT.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I bet someone called it halfway through Obama's speech at the 2004 Dem convention.

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Hey, did you guys see the names on the sample ballot that the voting folks use to show how to vote? There was one section "Chicago Arts Commissioner", and the choices were Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy -- the whole thing had some good lolz.

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

not lulzy:

the old man election judge who looked at me and hissed "you're all voting for obama, aren't you. you should be voting mccain"

i tried to call that hotline jenny's working for and it put me on hold forever so i had to get off.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

hay does anyone have any tickets for 2nite!!! ive changed my mind and now i want to go

deej, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

The proper response is "Step aside, old man. You're on the bus or you're under it."

Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

WHOA. That's fucked up!

Jenny had some interesting stories of shenanigans in Indiana - like the Republican poll-watcher who was asking people who they were voting for, and asking to see their licenses in an effort to disqualify them based on their addresses.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i glared at him and then loudly told another judge what he said
her response: "he's mean"

that's why i called the hotline.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

this is obv a pretty new measure - but most (but not all) bloggers kept quiet as they feared going to jail.
